So, anyone else bothered by the fact that at settlements only the outer doors close, the inner doors remain open always

Its something that has bugged me at the back of my head for a while now.

All these buildings with the double sets of doors, yet the inner doors are always open. I get the feeling the original plan was for you to approach, the outer doors would open, you'd enter, they would close, and the inner doors would then open.

My suspicion is that this led to issues with NPC movement or something and FD just decided to keep the inner doors permanently open.

PS: My Immerzhun!

Initially, I was slightly bothered (although I admit I'd love to see it close, just for the sake of it), but then the force field that for some reason can keep breathable air on one side while everything alse goes through it without a hitch wins, so I am ok with it!

I'd love to see a big shutter for the mailslots, now that I think of it!

Ooooh...

And yeah, the magic forcefield i know is what keeps the air in... but then, why do they need the extra doors? Maybe just a safety feature for emergencies when the forcefield fails? But in that case, why don't they close when power goes off?

Too many questions!

Because for some reason, despite a loss of power, the atmospheric pressure systems always keep working. It's very convenient if you want to keep fires burning for a while.

The access rights system also keeps working at all times, as does the power plant console. ;)

Powered down settlements are a bit special

Their ATC and docking computers always work
The building always seem to be able to maintain air pressure (and a constant flow of oxygen so those fires can keep burning)

I guess they were built before the magic force field was invented. With that in place, there is no need anymore for conventional air vents and the second door has lost its purpose.

Plasma windows maintaining a pressure differential and keeping air inside are one of the least magical of ED's fictional aspects. Similar technology that has existed for decades in the real world, just at a smaller scale and currently limited to flat planes.

The real issue with Odyssey settlements is that they seem to remain intact even after power fails.

Emergency backup power for things like when the main power goes off. Its a pretty normal thing.

Emergency power is usually substantially less than that provided by main power, or short lived. The rational thing would be for the conventional airlock double-doors to activate and the surely costly plasma window to be shut off.

Not really. It's been long established in the ED universe that everyone mostly relies on atmospheric shielding to keep the air in, not doors. The outer door is there for security purposes, and the inner door is probably there in case of emergencies. There's even a shutter at the entrance of the docking cylinder that can close it off.
