Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The fact that they're completely grid-locked by their inability to find a networking solution which supports the gameplay scope that they've pre-sold?

No. I do not.

Everything else is chaff...
No I meant the fact that they've stopped forecasting patches beyond this quarter.

Oh my, Spectrum is on fire again. Just after it had started to settle down after the previous fire.

I do like this new CIG. Its non-stop entertainment.

Looking forward to seeing what they do in the coming month!
Heh, my daily dose of entertainment from Spectrum was worth the price of admission. Noticed the mods finally deleted my comment that had gained over 120 votes, where I suggested they may be positioning themselves for a sale to a publisher.

Taking on making a graph database is great when your goal is never finishing anything and blaming it on X team finishing Y tech.

It's perfect.

Next item on the list is a completely new micro-kernel to run their game on because all existing operating systems cannot handle SC's fidelities. Soon followed by a bespoke private cloud based on said micro-kernel.

Only 9 more years before CR's self-proclaimed "won't take another 10 years".

NB - Some companies actually do this. Bespoke kernels, bespoke cloud platforms, bespoke hardware, bespoke everything. They are usually financial tech companies with their own money to fund it and, crucially, an actual requirement for it.

For CIG. Like I said, completely unable to understand their work. Because even understanding that they do not understand it took them years after introducing the developed staggering.
SaltEMike had a guy that owns his own gamedev studio with a small team in on ATC about a week ago. The 3 quarters prediction thing not working isn't a CIG thing. It fundamentally doesn't work with gamedev. Things WILL slip.

Two Years Ago:

Pillar Talk - Looking Into 2020: A Prediction Check...

This video was dedicated to features coming in 2020. IE:
  • Intro: "This is a conversation about what will be coming beyond 3.8. So 3.9, 4.0, and potentially beyond."
  • Outro: "There you go, that's a fairly in-depth discussion of what's coming up this year."
(NB the footage itself was filmed at Citcon in 2019, so when they say 'next year' periodically throughout the video, they mean 2020, and this is clear in context.)

Did these features get released in 2020?:

NO:

* iCache.

* Making a homestead on a planet. Deploying defences etc. Tony Z says other players would be able to destroy, or customise such bases, because "that's what we do so often". They "build in the fundamental mechanics, and then you get all of this complex functionality that naturally results.".

* "Persistence for resources" on planets etc, leading to finite caps and gold rushes, for 3.9. Essentially brings exploration.

* Background Universe simulation. The resource exploration feeds into that. "The thing that you're working on Tony, that we're running".

* Jump points & a new solar system. Sean was glad they showed it at Citcon and was very excited for 2020 on those grounds. Tony Z was excited by the discovery, mapping and economic impact of the various types of jump point.

* Pyro specifically, with its lawlessness etc. (Chris qualifies Pyro as not coming in 3.9, but after that, and some time in 2020.).

* Refuelling and salvage. (Originally roadmapped for 2017 etc).

* Theatres of War. Coming out in 2020, but not with 3.8.

YES:

* Prisons in 3.9.

---

So 4.0 became 3.10. We're now on the (delayed) 3.13 in Q2 2021. Outside of prisons, literally none of the planned things they mentioned are in...

Where art thou miracle techs? With your tsunami of emergent gameplay?

(Like purely on iCache, which started this deep dive: I get that a database that handles 'billions' of items and allows many servers to access it robustly is no small task ultimately. But still..... What a load of perpetual chaff they come out with :/)

Prediction Check:

Did any of the stuff planned for 2020 arrive in 2021?

Answer:

No.

Just a reminder: If any faithful talks about stuff that is coming this year as though its actually going to happen, remind them they can't hold CIG accountable for not delivering on things. Its not promises. Disclaimers, etc.

From which studio? I assume he was not from Rockfish Games.

Of course if this is so fundamentally obvious, with a suite of veteran game development superstars on board, CIG should have known it from the very beginning. Unless the devs were telling the makerting things could not be delivered but marketing pushed for them being communicated anyway. Or nobody was telling the marketing about it because of the broken culture of a company led by a guy who publically announced the last technical hurdles for SQ42 to be released were gone in 2018. Or his brother, who though dynamic (and now scrapped) server meshing would be ready in 2019, with hundreds of players in a single room.

IDK, hard to say. But maybe, just maybe, CIG really do not understand modern video game development.

I think that's a bit unfair. Based on his track record it would seem that Captain Cobblers hasn't understood how to run a project in quite a while.

It's the almost zero impact that the arrival of Erin made that puzzles and dismays. He at least seemed to know how to ship product. But then, when on the gravy train, do as the driver...

What I've learned is that unless CIG includes the word "promise" regarding release of ... well ... anything, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

And even if they did. I wouldn't believe it. They've talked enough in the past about things happening within certain timeframes, that's definitely on the cards, and then it never happened.
