Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

So you don't think that CIG are just selling ships in a macro transaction store? That it is really CIG's money in what is essentially a normal (maybe not exactly normal given the price tag) transaction?

Interesting to see you are bought in to the notion that these are really pledges and donations.
I am actually not bought at all into the donations/pledge narrative. My opinion has mainly been it all is pre orders in principle, vat and all. Now, if you ask CIG and follow their behavior in legal defenses or customer support responses etc, they will probably tell you they consider SC already released in early access but… hush! No one needs to know or game press reviews and scores may start appearing!

or......

i have better things to do with my free time.

Sure, you just snipe the thread. More interested in the quick wound than whether you’re actually on target.

So you miss. A lot. (Viajero literally didn’t say anything that = backer cash is just a pledge. You conjured it up out of your own desire to land a quick blow).

You were wrong ¯\(ツ)/¯

It’s happened before. And will happen again.

A lot.

But high wake away like it never happened, for sure ;)

not everyone is going dedicate their lives to tracking the status of elite refuge players who started playing star citizen.

or writing daily posts of hundreds of words cross referenced like a legal brief.

Yeah see, I make no apology for not believing in things until I can demonstrate them.

I'll own that I'm obsessed by SC, for sure. It's a hobby. A favoured soap opera. (And so I'll often investigate claims made about this daft recreational world as a result.)

But I ain't going to apologise for being amused by it all either. Or for being fascinated by some of the mooks stuck in its great big Katamari ball of nonsense. All believing what they'd like to believe...

Right, the ability enter some random dudes 130m long ship, which has a fully fleshed out interior of exceptional detail and photo-realistic graphics quality, get into a physical turret and pew pew at everything around you independently from what the other 20 people are doing on said ship.

A couple of other games may technically do it, but not one comes even close to the Immersion that Star Citizen does it, that is the difference CR makes.

Janky animation, physics, AI and networking are all immersion-killers for me, regardless of how pretty it looks in screenshots, or how it does that one thing where you can walk around ships. I played Infocom text adventures that I found far more immersive.
I like how you added a video that demonstrated literally nothing that you described. And "photo-realistic"? lol, you must have a rubbish camera.

you said this:

Many of those companies regularly release products and sell them, then they manage their finances how they see fit, their money, their risk. CIG has not released a single product for 10+ years while still asking for more money though. Backers money, backers risk. Some wound call what CIG does indeed a scam, or simply fraud.

You use the term "backer", what does that mean? If people are just buying a product, why not use the term "customer". "Backer" has the donation/fundraising connotation attached it to.

CIG sells people access to an alpha game, assets (ships that are in the game), or assets that will be in the game in the future in which case they give you a substitute ship.

CIG isnt "asking" for more money. "Asking" also has the connotation of donation/fundraising. They sell stuff for more money like any business.

CIG sells stuff, customers buy it. Customers give their money for stuff to CIG. It isnt "backer money". Its the money CIG got for selling stuff.

Am I a Elite Dangerous backer sitting around while FDev asks me for more money while I wait for the promised "meaningful pvp"?

Just the commonly used word to refer to anyone having spent money with CIG. Used for ease of reference 🤷‍♂️. I have no issue with us stopping using it if that is what you d like. But it has been the go to way for almost a decade.

Spectrum...
What had happened in the past was key engineer became sick and everything depended on it put on hold. Same can happen again in the future plus the possibility of key engineers headhunted by deep pocket competitors funded by NFT.

ITS ALPHA! No, wait, its a released game!!!!

Well CIG itself uses term "backer". Though their definitions are at best "fluid". You can be at same time be backer pledging to fund development of game, and customer buying product "as it is". Mostly depending if you try to get your money back.

Well I'm sorry to disappoint, but this was from October 2014.

So many things lost down memory holes... So much future deja vu...

What Happened?

Things like electronic warfare, mid-flight repair... Once these systems are fully designed the goal is to break down the Engineering and Art requirements to begin introducing these new mechanics into the game as quickly as possible.
Erm, hello?
On the VFX front our team spent some dedicated time working with the Illfonic guys to put the finishing touches on the FPS and its opening cinematic.
Lol 😁
We’ve also been working closely with ATX to iterate on Terra Prime’s layout, the second planetside location you’ll be able to visit. Note that the more locations and planets we build the faster we’ll be able to develop others thanks to all the tools and systems we are currently developing and putting to test.
Ummmm?
The new system entitled GOST (Game Object State) will help us in the long term better manage vehicles and their various systems in a unified and cohesive way
[GOST was replaced by Item 2.0 in 2016]
The CitizenCon demo gave the most revealing shot yet of what we’re aiming to deliver in regards to the shops you’ll find at many landing zones with Dumper’s Depot
I guess plans changed?

We’re starting work on the shop interfaces this month... which means that buying and selling items within the world of Star Citizen will soon be a reality.
Come on selling, only 7 years late...
More than just visuals, the shops are to be dynamic (items sold are changed based on inventory and economy) so they require more work than your normal game shop but will be approximately 1313% more awesome than that other shop you went the other day, and that is a fact.
Oh my, a dynamic economy too? Sounds great.
Phenomena interesting to a scientific observer might provide cargo transports with a valuable commodity, or clever combatants with a tactical advantage versus their less knowledgeable counterparts... You will of course see nebulae, asteroid fields, comets, electromagnetic storms, and the like, but we’re also going to be aiming to include quite a few surprises. Suffice to say, for now, that exploration and discovery will play a huge role in Star Citizen.
Why nebulae not science my ship?

Groundhog Day:

This month the Engineering team has wrapped up work on the new paint system for vehicles
We’ve also been working hard on the improvements to missiles
The flight model and targeting/HUD have also undergone a lot of development effort within the past month
the Design team here in Santa Monica worked extensively on balancing the ships, weapons, items
we’ve also updated the mass of all items
Which will all be done again for the Materials refactor. 8 years later. Maybe.
the Carrack as it progresses through the ship pipeline.
6 years later, Carracks hull appears....
For modeling the team continues to work on finishing damage states for legacy variants
Sure hope it was done to gold standard
It takes a lot of effort to make truly next-generation quality characters, and David Jennison and Billy Lord are doing their best to ensure that they live up to the high standards of the rest of the game.
Goodbye David. Your pithy HR letters will be missed. Sorry about DNA Head Textures Update v4 or whatever
Things have really started moving on the networking front. After completing numerous technical design documents laying out exactly how each piece of the technology would function, we’ve now moved into full production.
Just... god damn...
Squadron 42 is moving along well, with mechanics and levels all getting pinned down in greater detail. It’s always very exciting to get the video play through as the various levels get more art and design love. The fantastic FPS support from Illfonic has really helped our ground based levels come on leaps and bounds.
Ouch

And on and on and on it goes...

Pre Engine Change, Pre Procgen Planets, Pre Modern Concept of SC. Need I say more? What is the use of bringing this up? Pulling up things from 8 years ago won't make the game release

Hmm, why would anyone point out the egregious amount of wasted work implicit in SC's rolling scope creep & 'Alpha as a AAA service' approach?

A word to the wise? A handy template for understanding where the $400m+ has gone to date? And why so many years of work are still obviously required?

Who can say. Most perplexing.
