Console Update

Jeez.
I've been reading some of these consolier posts. And it hit me.
What if pc were being binned and all my work... the grinds the relogs the mindless mining, the engineering grinds ship n foot.
100s if not 1000s of hours spent... spent, all gone.
This is not right.
Is there a precedent? A comparison?
It's cold and heartless with no regard at all for cmdrs who love this game, and have been binned for technical or otherwise, reasons.
Another commercial disaster!
And one that leaves alot of cmdrs out in the cold unable to play oddity as it progresses.
Daft!
I get that they wanna focus development on pc yeah sure but just caning consoles is wrong.

Hard to even say it's surprising since they canned the Mac version as well due to hardware/software issues. FDev showed their hand a long time ago that they have no qualms in simply severing sections of their community.

As a console player Odyssey didn't really bother me. I play Elite for the space aspect not FPS. If I wanted to play an FPS there are plenty on console to choose from. It would have been nice however to walking about my fleet carrier or even my ships. To stop all development is however still a slap in the face after all the grinding on and off over the last few years. There are still annoying bugs in Elite that have clearly been ignored for awhile that are clearly now permanent.

I think a migration path should be offered and as soon as possible for anyone able to jump ship. Should they wish to.

This thread has a lot support of PC players showing real solidarity towards console players which is nice to see not just the gleeful mocking of people who maybe cannot afford high end PCs to play a game on. To the clear PC elites looking down on console players saying you are holding the game back I would suggest you Google Xbox Series X pc gfx card equivalents. Then maybe you will see this is not a console not being powerful enough but more a company is struggling to get out of a hole they created by rushing a DLC out.

I'm still really disappointed that they weren't able to clarify in their announcement whether consoles saves can be ported to PC. That is the least they should've included in their announcement after such a long waiting time.
yeah, the 'were looking into options, nothing to announce' is frustratingly traditional FDev answer. With their track record, we might get an some kind of answer in few months whether or not one can transfer anything else than credits and liquidated assets.

The answer to all of those questions is "Console is in maintenance mode, it will technically run but we will not touch it at all (unless maybe in the event of complete failure so we can say it's still playable)".
Sorry to be pessimistic but this is the answer FDEV will not say out loud.
In my opinion, consoles (at least PS) have been on 'maintenance mode' for a while now. After this the consoles are in hospice care (if you call it care).

Sorry, what is it you think that act says with respect to console owners and EDO?

On a side note, we aren't in the EU any more (sadly)
O.k. if you're serious about wanting this information anyway I'll put out a short analysis:

1. Frontier has, over time made representations (given information) that Odyssey would be available for consoles as part of the Elite franchise and IP.

2. A consumer buys EDH (folded now to just ED) for their console because there is a presumption that Odyssey is going to be available at some point in time. (This could be very difficult for Frontier to defend against as it can't be proved that anyone who bought ED after the announcement of coming Odyssey didn't buy it with the anticipation of the Odyssey being delivered at some stage. Additionally the menu screen, at least for the PS4 version I have, has a patch/update identifier that states "Odyssey Compatibility Update" which has been there as long as I can recall that further reinforces the presumption that Odyssey is coming to the consoles).

3. The representations made by Frontier on console stores are now unfulfilled because Odyssey DLC for console and ED console support has been withdrawn which could create an impression that Frontier's representations were false and misleading console customers who bought the game after the announcements that Odyssey was going to come to consoles. (How long ago was that now?)

The above could be construed as a breach of Consumer Law in the relevant jurisdiction (UK). Therefore there is a potential cause of action that may argue for restitution (refunds).

If someone thinks the above hypothetical fits their current position as a consumer of Frontier's products:

Sony Playstation also has a European office I believe.

.... and I'm done I think.

I would concur that the "Odyssey Compatibility Update" would be susceptible to generating an expectation.....AFTER the game has been installed, or maybe during(?) the installation (the player wouldn't see it until the installation).

But the first bit about it being difficult to prove that anyone who bought ED after the announcement of coming Odyssey didn't buy it with the anticipation of Odyssey being delivered.....equally it would be difficult to prove that they did. It would be very easy for the person making the claim to say so but there'd be no evidence either way other than that person's word. I'd be very surprised if this would successfully be determined as a breach of consumer law, although that may depend on what FDEV does next - the key, in my opinion, will be whether FDEV makes any 'good faith' attempt to remediate things by offering a transfer of accounts to PC, perhaps with a free account for Horizons (seeing as that is all they currently have on console, that's all they'd be entitled to on transfer to PC). I'd be very surprised if FDEV doesn't make an offer of something along those lines quite soon.

Remember we don't know exactly when the decision was finally made though. David's statement is so brief it feels to me like they've been agonising over it for a bit but have only now decided to bite the bullet, possibly only at a meeting that very day. They would have anticipated the fallout, including people wanting to transfer their accounts, so I would expect they'll provide further advice on that soon.....or they better as the longer they leave that the more irate people will get than they already are.

I've only been playing a year-ish (December 2020) Xbox Series X commander, all I ever wanted from Odyssey was to get out of the ship and the station interiors and then eventually the ship interiors. If they move forward with this, that the end of me buying any new frontier game.

The more I think about it, the more I think how silly this "critical update" decision is!

We should easily still be getting any new ships, weapons, or features etc, which don't require the Odyssey "tech" to run on "old" consoles.

Then of course they really should be releasing the game on "next gen" systems and just giving us everything there!

And really there's nothing stopping them delaying any or all of Odyssey's features on "old gen" until they optimise it to actually run well, fast tracking the game to "next gen" and releasing it all as said on "old gen", "eventually" - we can wait as long as we have to 🤔😯😂🩲🤘 .

Rackham’s Peak in HIP 58832 would make for an excellent fleet carrier graveyard, as it can only be accessed via carrier. This functionally locks the system down and makes it our graveyard, with us drinking booze until the end of time…or at least until full transfers from console to PC that include ranks, legacy modules, engineering, Arx, Arx purchases, etc.

Consider this journey our final event fellow console commanders.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

R.I.P. Elite :'(
Hi other games! :D

My opinion:

  • canceling EDO for consoles CAN'T have been an easy decision as they now won't earn any money with console versions of the game (think about THAT before getting angry, although I would also be disappointed as a Consolero™, of course!)
  • the most reasonable and unhurting solution would be a FULL account transfer to PC. Not even offering a way out would be devestating!

-> But alas, I'd bet a month's salary that they are not able to do it, because they must have already tried everything BEFORE sharing the bad news (unless they're really even dumber than I thought). On the other hand I wonder why they wouldn't have announced it yet. Maybe they still have a tiny bit of hope left, as hope always dies last.

Oh, and before I forget that, I've got a message for my fellow PC commanders: Please show some dignity and respect the concerns of our console friends. Making fun of or even mocking them is pretty much the most pathetic s*** I can think of. I know that just the worst mockingbirds would cry like little schoolgirls if they were in their position (which honestly makes it a little funnier, thankfully). People like that are probably the same people who obstruct emergency personnel in car accidents so they can gawk for their "fun".

Then again, this is also a good transition to go back to topic and make clear the reason why these are also totally BAD news for PC players: a HUGE chunk of money just got cut off because there will be no income generated through Consoleros™ buying their versions of EDO. And you don't have to be a genius to see that this is going to be bad in the end for EDO, too. The 3 or 4 guys switching to PC won't make the difference. Maybe now you will think twice about making jokes at the expense of Consoleros™. If you can think at all, you'll cross fingers that transfering accounts will be made possible ASAP!

Cheers!
