Is it done for?

I find it curious when members call the EDO expansion a FP shooter, as the expansion has added more to the game than the original game loops, let's compare - EDH / EDO...

Base Game:
  • Trade (buy & sell) from stations / outposts & planetary ports
  • Delivery - both goods & data. (includes fetch missions)
  • Single mission board with all options available from ship.
  • Exploration with Bio / Geo
  • Combat, in various flavours.
That is it: no more or less.

EDO Expansion:
  • Trade (buy & sell) from surface installations - usually with improved prices to space or surface ports, but less demand / supply.
  • Delivery - both goods & data (includes fetch missions)
  • Missions offered from Terminals & NPC in stations / outposts / ports with additional missions from Terminals & NPC on planetary settlements. (with single faction mission boards in planetary settlements)
  • Exploration with unique flora
  • Combat, in various flavours
  • Stealth based missions
It, of course, also offers all of the content available in Horizons - because it is an expansion of the base game.

So, in truth, all EDO adds is stealth missions, as all of the other content is offered, in its own form, by the base game. There is allegedly a 'new' mission type due with Update 11, which may or may not be unique to EDO.

But, if folk wish to believe it is a FPS, go ahead!
Forgetting mining... But the point I'm making is that the soul purpose of the expansion is to attract FPS players into the player base. The exploration with fauna is a joke and right up there with the most inane grind mechanics in the game. The trade and general fetch missions are simply extensions of the pre-existing mechanics and generally make the process even more arduous and time sucking than just doing it in your ship. The interaction with NPCs is just dreary, cookie cutter and time consuming and does nothing to give a feeling of population, character or sense of place. Essentially it did two things. 1. It added attraction to fps players and 2. Introduced some more pointless grind mechanics. The fact that the lion share of the goals in the grind mechanics are for combat oriented developments means that almost everything else was an afterthought.

I called it an fps because that's what it's primarily about. It doesnt add anything more meaningful to the game world that makes the universe more compelling. It's just a bunch of cookie cutter stuff that lends no further "sense of place" which is a big issue for the game. It makes no difference which station/planet/settlement you're at, it all feels the same.

They have been a bone of contention since introduction in 3.3, there were many 'happy' discussions over the change, those were epic times!

Even the DSS is just shooting planets!

(I'm one of the ones who was pleased at being able to find 'stuff' with the new system, it took me ages to get back from Colonia when 3.3 dropped!)
holds hand up........ whilst I absolutely think it could be better than it is, I thought the planet scanning was an improvement. it's not that I specifically wanted computer golf game mechanics in my space exploration game but I did want something more hands on than a passive scan

and launching probes does have a certain startrek vibe to it. personally I would rather they were not infinite but that there was a skill to it which depended on if they came back or not.... but perfection is the enemy of the good as they say and I think the probes are good.

I always forget mining... and that was one of the more 'spectacular' introductions in 3.3! (and an activity I do every week or so for 40 minutes, just to stock up on Tritium for the minimal movements I do in Colonia)

As for the remainder of the comment, I did mention that some would believe it is just a FPS mechanic, despite the remaining options. No problem, we interpret things differently, is all.

That was to be expected, but rough for console players. Are we next?

Next? The PC version has been on life support for a year now with no core changes being made, not even unifying chat between Horizons and Odyssey. They didn't even tell investors to look forward to anything in Elite. It's done.

What happen when ED gets shelved? You already called dibs?

As you ask, so shall you receive....an answer!

Yup Ratty is correct, and he's not one of the ladies.

He holds a massive 'garage sale' a couple of days before the announcement, gets filthy rich and buys an island in the Caribbean, attracting a bevy of scantily clad, very attractive 'others' to accompany him into his self-imposed exile...

I also should mention that I intend to pull as much copper wire out of the walls in the elite office, as that sells well. And of course, the toilets won't be up to much after that, I'll be making sure.

Oh, isn't everything done in the ship bit also first person perspective - so Horizons is a space shooter?

Good morning 🥰
Said it before, and I'll say it again.

Prior to Odyssey launching, the majority of the game was about combat. Even if you're a peaceful trader making their way in the galaxy, there were constant interdictions and the threat of pirates.

Engineers that were all about upgrading weapons and shields.

Powerplay items - with the exception of the mining lance (gag), all of them are combat related.

Everything with the Thargoids - kill 'em all.

Given all that, I have no idea why people are somehow surprised that when Odyssey was released, the element of the on-foot stuff they chose to flesh out first was combat.

But still, those who claim that's ALL it is... clearly haven't played it, and must have their blinkers on when talking about Horizons.

Wow! Compared to the 3 NPC co-pilots I had in my first couple of years of play, that one is a supermodel!
The NPCs in ED appear to be generated with the same parameters as those in skyrim or Fallout 4 (unmodded, of course!).
Lydia was pretty. And meeting Garrus in some godforsaken place was always nice.
