Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I thought those Origin space games that Roberts says he's "known for" were about fighting for a cause, commanding wings into battle, on-going story concerning conflict and semi-interesting aliens with motives. Finding trade routes or exploring maybe?
It seems that ten years in and with half a billion dollars already in the bank, they are more concerned with low hanging fruit survival mechanics.
You mean like the Xenothreat event, the Nine Tails Lockdown, Idris mission... and the whole SQ42 game ?
One of the cool thing is that while 1 or 2 guys work on the eat/drink mechanism, plenty of other guys can work on other more important mechanisms. By "more important" you mean releasing short tasks before long tasks ?

Lies, damn lies, and Turbulent

Future-as-present tense at play as usual.

Since you consider SQ42 in it's current form as a relevant "game" you will consider the following "argument" completely perfect in it's delivery and defeats any subsequent answers you care to bring to the table. I consider the matter closed, as clearly you accept "nothing" is as good as the real thing:

Nothing is best. Because it's nothing. Nothing can be better at being nothing. Nothing is the ultimate statement of Star Citisn't. A big, empty nothing.

No, no, just better than the non existent one of ED and the non existent one of NMS.
It's sooo hard for you to acknowledge that something is better in SC

Just to help out one more time...

A) Most people here happily criticise ED at length. The belief that SC criticism derives from some 'ED defence force' root is so far off the mark that you might as well be shouting on a street corner about cabbages...

B) Subjective preferences ≠ objective facts. You 'objectifying' an unreleased feature which you've never used over another feature which you've never used is therefore particularly amusing ;)

C) Lauding minor things for years is very telling about the state of SC. This was where we started. I took the mickey out of your long-term love affair with a deeply average dev tool for UI. You respond by extolling a UI panel...

Do I need to say more? :)

Don't keep on about the Redeemer fridge...mine is perpetually empty every time I spawn the ship. I've seen it full a grand total of once since I've owned a Redeemer...even after I restock it manually the contents magically vanish every time I store and recall the damned ship. I swear some troll is sneaking on board and eating it all...It's like living in a house full of teenage children all over again, every parent's personal plague of locusts :cautious:

That's the subsumption AI at work, you probably have a few bartenders who couldn't take it anymore as stowaways on your ship, Mole.

That is a very well thought out and reasonable response but I fear the kind of answers you´ll get will go along the lines of... "No U!" or "Look, ooh shiny!"

Initially? No, FDev was never crowdfunded, it was just Elite that was crowdfunded.
Lots of games came before Elite Dangerous, including the highly successful Kinectimals.
Very good I misread, look at my join date, point still stands.

Please refrain from trying to 'educate' me on Frontier pal, I was playing the original Elite when it came out

A) Wossrong with cabbages? Kale stew is a delicacy here.
B) Too many foreign words. Like sukjective. Not touching with pole.
C) Exactly. Is not just the kale in the stew. There goes some grieben in too. Lard with crispy pork bits. No idea what that is in english. And then you have choice: cured pork or the good old mettwurst.

NPCs: What Can We Expect?

Conversational logic will be able to easily interpret and branch based upon your reputation in a given area
[Dynamically constructed daily schedules] allow [NPCs] to vary what they are doing and where they are doing it based on the time of day
If a war is raging near a planet then you’ll expect it’s medical facilities will be getting a lot of traffic, lots of limping and bloody pilots and marines should be going in and lots of patched together characters would be coming out.

Hiring NPC Crews For My Ship?

This feature isn’t going to arrive in 2016 but I can talk a bit about where we’re heading.
[Attributes are] going to include things like, for example, how well they pilot, operate a gun turret, control a tractor beam or repair damage to your ship. We’re probably going to wind up tracking a few psychological components like aggression and intelligence as well and using those to influence how that NPC behaves in various situations.
Some of the NPCs that you encounter during your travels may, depending on how the conversation goes, offer their services to you

What Capabilities Will NPCs Be Able to Execute?

...things like operating the scanners and weaponry on a ship, serving as onboard security of a designated area, or acting as a general purpose engineer capable of effecting repairs.
AI ships... don’t yet know how to position a ship when the objective is to retrieve ejected cargo or how to hover over the surface of an asteroid body, taking input from the scanners - which would be identifying valuable pockets of ore - such that the beam and cargo operators would be in a position so that they could do their jobs.
There are some positions... that will, on occasion, require more frequent communication - a ship’s pilot, for example, needs to know where you want to go, whether you’ve decided that you want to break off from a particular encounter. Engineering efforts on the other hand, they could be prioritized so that you’re able to dictate what you want back online first - propulsion, shield or weapons.

Will I Have to Hire Large Crews Individually?

...you might need many dozens or even hundreds of NPCs
Cooks and janitors and security guards then could be hired en masse allowing you to focus on hiring just the individual specialists as you’d typically do on the smaller ships.
Senior crew members, you might even call them your Officers, are really an enhancement of your character and your ship - they are an extension of your overall capabilities.
Given the difficulty and expense in replacing them, then we might allow the concept of ship insurance to be extended to cover senior officers of your NPC crew for an additional charge commensurate with their demonstrated capabilities.

And just so you know, Tony and Francesco Roccucci, who is our lead AI engineer, have been making great progress internally on Subsumption and our new mission system so watch for further updates in the coming months on that.
