Radio silence on when we can actually order a drink at the bar

Order a drink at the bar? Ha! I'm on my way back from Jaques Station. Not only is there no "drink at the bar" - there's no Jaques at Jaques Station you can even TRY to order a drink FROM.

New conspiracy theory: He's not real. Seriously, has anyone ever seen him? At the bar?

Hello hello,

Many players here would like the opportunity to buy a drink and sit down on some of the seats in starports.

Do we have any idea when / if this may be forthcoming? Didn't some of the CMs think this was a good idea?

The bar areas are always dead in Odyssey. They should be actual places you can hang out. Having a drink and a seat will make it less awkward, while allowing some of the RP community to feel more at home.

How many beer mats do I need to send to Frontier HQ on a weekly basis until this gets some recognition haha?
Its amazing this wasnt at launch, and even has to be asked for.

It's not that amazing. Writing UI is one of the most hated things in dev, and you want them to create a UI for ordering drinks (and all the mocap and different drink objects - otherwise there would be dozens of posts about lazy FD not having different art for different drinks) that basically does nothing in the game except provide a tiny bit of immersion. Don't get me wrong, it'd be neat to have but I think FD have bigger fish to fry.

Whatever you do, don't watch drew wagers recent star citizen streams. Sure I'm not going there until they finish it, but when you see the space legs over there, I'm getting the impression that sticking with horizons is the most positive elite experience still available. You get the old planets, and don't have to answer the hard questions to yourself when you go to odd content.

You can get a drink in a galaxy far far away.

True really. Animation of the barman giving you the drink, animation of you taking the drink, animation of you drinking the drink .. drink colours, sizes and empties. Animation of you getting drunk, animation of you giving an o7 with drink in hand and spilling your drink, animation of you resting your drink at a table or drinking your drink sitting down. Like you say, neat .. but not exactly gameplay and taking the micky while some still have bad framerates and consoles don't even factor yet.

Ps frontier, if you don’t know how to do it, trusty elder scrolls online has a cheap but effective solution..

Make it an emote.

If people have to fill in the gap of ordering a drink and paying credits.. it’s still better than nothing.

Just in case, eso has emotes for drinking out of 3 or 4 different cups with appropriate manners, eating 5 or so different foods, and a few forms of sloshing around drunk. Strangely too they’re all free, even though they have very, very expensive cash shop emotes as well…

I don't care about the drinks at all. I just want to be able to both sit-down AND interact with the bar-tender, that would be a really nice touch. Even have a few NPC mission givers show up seated at tables where we could sit down and open the dialog menu.

It's classic FDev that you can now sit at the bar, but the bartender is out of reach to talk to. Yes, mission givers should be at tables, not standing around like carnival barkers.

It’s a rather sad situation where the players are pointing out these elements rather than FD, but I suppose that’s just evidence of an efficient development process (!) focusing on key elements not the accoutrements (!).

Odyssey really isn’t ‘elite feet’ that was evident from its launch. FD did do a great level of historical work in that regard, from hand to hand combat, how suits move in zero g to folding tables (!) but all that’s obviously been discarded, as reiterated by Arthur’s statement of how ‘interiors’ would be boring.

This same ethos was obviously applied to the station interiors relatively; that or the team in charge of Odyssey were either not ‘aware’ of any historical work (!) or simply not employed to expand the work of previous teams, but develop a new and cost effective mechanism that focuses players towards the FPS content and buy skins.

At the minimum bar keepers need at least present as being employed in dispensing libations. If their inclusion is solely as ‘material traders’ call them that and remove the bar altogether, if the ‘widespread practice’ is supposedly illicit, again illustrate this somehow!

At most an expansion upon a simple introduction and a drinks menu, ought to be enough. You don’t actually need to manifest drinks, just expand the social element to breathe life into the process.

Were FD literally sitting (sorry standing) there going, nah that’s too boring, not fast enough, ignore immersion, go straight to the spreadsheets…

I would also like to ask why every bartender is a material trader? Lore wise is this supposed to be ‘normal’. I take it that it is so and legal, as carrier owners make a profit and there are no fines, even though it’s described as ‘off the books’ (aka illegal)!

My point is it’s the tip of an iceberg…much like telepresence, it makes no logical sense other than being a creative cul-de-sac. It can easily be explained away with some imaginative dialogue but FD opt for the cheap option.

‘Rebel Galaxy Outlaw’ bar system is incredibly simple, but its far more impressive and has oodles more character; ironically I’d go as far to say it’s more Elite than Odyssey (in some respects)… sadly as a founder I despair at FD’s absent imagination.

This is what was planned :

This is what we have instead :

This is quite representative of a major (IMO) issue between ED and EDO : the complete 180° on design philosophy.
ED is quite hardcore on the "immersive" part. Odyssey is the opposite. While ED can be quite strict on his immersion stuff, to the point of being annoying (remember the ship transition that was removed with EDO ? Or the "non warp between star" thing, so you enjoy your Hutton trip), Odyssey just go the opposite way (instant respawn, ticket system, 4th wall breaking menu, 0g that doesn't do anything but claim it's 0g...).
It is not even because making ingame menu like the holographic one aboard the ship is difficult. They did it already, and it's been done since doom and dead space 1. It's not a weird design that went through. No, it's a specific design philosophy. From concept to production, it went through no issue.
The whole design of Odyssey, except for exobiology (somehow) is on a different philosophy than the rest of the game. It seems another studio made the game. It's the equivalent of Dust 514 was for Eve.

The ONLY immersive thing I found is the breath leaving water inside the helmet if you run for a while. That's what ED design philosophy is about. Sure it's not gameplay. No, it's not going to keep you entertained for hours, but that's what ED did anyway. For better or for worse, and the people who enjoyed it stayed, the one who didn't left, or made peace with it.

And that's bad. Not because it's objectively bad. Maybe you like it that way. Or even prefer it. But it's bad because a lot of your customers and players EXPECT you to follow the philosophy you used. Consistency, you know ?
If I play Battlefield, and I'm quite a fan, I expect the next battlefield to be a "realistic" (or should I say "plausible " ?) multiplayer mil sim. If they release Battlefield : My Little Pony, I'll wonder WTH happened. Chances are, you'll lose customers. Whether or not BF: MLP is actually a good game.

This is not only in the whole design philosophy, but also by repeating the same mistakes made. Like all the engineering issues.
Eventually, to me, Odyssey feel like some random no name sub contracted company made it. Either that, or the lead designer have changed so many times , they can't have any philosophy that last.

Welp, now I want to play battlefield : my little pony.

I haven't played for months and I always like to drop by the forums before I CONSIDER wiring myself all up (VR) and logging in... Nothing I see here drawing me into the game but there are always a few gems on the forums...

So, I gotta say, I'm 100% for the Bartender, but strictly if there is only 1 bar in the whole universe, and also only if its located at Hutton.

Then we can find out who REALLY wants a bar in the game!
