Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

Hopefully this includes leaving Horizons as-is on PC rather than replacing it with Odyssey Lite. This will give the best experience to the highest number of players (some of us prefer Horizons over Odyssey) while also enticing those who really want Odyssey features to pay you for those features. 🤞

Hopefully the merge will happen, and soon, purely to enable those of us who enjoy playing EDO to be able to play alongside friends who do not own the expansion, rather than downgrading to Horizons to play together.

Got industrial size popcorn for this one.
@Rubbernuke got any of that left? I'll buy it off you!

Yes, ruin the experience for everyone because your friends don't want to support Frontier by purchasing the DLC. And here I thought you liked the company.
I don't give a toss about the company - whatever could have made you even consider that? I have one title from this company, I don't have shares and know none of their board oe employees personally. I'm offended by the suggestion!

Ruin the experience for everyone? Gosh, you certainly do have a way with words!

@Bruce could I just ask for one point of clarification? Does this mean we can now consider Odyssey planet tech as 'done'? Asking because I've been holding off going deep on exploration in Odyssey because I didn't want any cool locations I find to change at some point. (and also I know there were complaints about Odyssey planets being flatter with less canyons than Horizons as well as the tiling issues).

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to take this opportunity to address the Tiling Planetary Features issue from the Issue Tracker.

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it, we have decided to focus those resources elsewhere. Reducing or preventing the tiling effect would require a deep-overhaul of fundamental systems, which in turn would disrupt other aspects of the game. This would inevitably take time away from developing and improving other elements such as performance, bug fixes, and new content. We cannot justify this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy in Elite. This is unlikely to change in the future so the issue will be closed, freeing up votes on the tracker for other issues.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.

As someone who's spent the last few weeks exploring full time, I've only noticed the tiling issue of total of once. On the whole, compared to the Absurd unrealism of Horizons planets, I find this to be a distinct Improvement.

I would much prefer you to spend your time tweaking more important things. Making piracy more worthwhile, making rares trading more worthwhile, and of course, critical issues like making the mining Lance decent.

Haha, of course, I'm just joking. But I'm also completely serious please fix the mining Lance.

This is fine !
On the bright side, you still have a long list of issues you can safely ignore so you can divert resources to, huh, something else !

Thank you Bruce. Good to have clarity on this. If this would have been the decision a year ago then I would have disagreed with it and wanted that re-roll of the galaxy.

A year in to Odyssey however, given how relatively little the tiling issue is (it's there but subsequent fixes meant you really have to look for it to spot it) then I agree that it's not worth fixing and re-rolling the galaxy at this point. Re-rolling would mean that exploration so far in Odyssey would be invalidated. That geography discovered so far would disappear forever. Our names would still be on planets but they wouldn't be the same ones that we've mapped, flown over, landed on, driven over and walked on.

Having said that, I still challenge the design decision to completely re-roll all previously discovered Horizons planets. There was history there in people's discoveries that is being overwritten and it would be good to hear about the technical limitations that prevent these historical planets from appearing the same.
