Game Bashing On Steam

This is my personal Odyssey review on Steam:

"Elite Dangerous was a fine game. Something extraordinary in any way.

This "DLC" is a joke, and the way Frontier is trying to cover up releasing a non finished game resembles Comical Ali.

Don't buy until they fix this mess, if ever."

I wrote that in May 2021, and looking back, I can't say that I was wrong, or that I should have written something different. Mark my words: It's not that ED isn't the best game I've ever played, but Odd was a disaster, plain and simple.

I wouldn't call it review bombing but you are making it too easy if you just say reviews are poor because Odyssey is crap.

Lots of people give it a bad review for nonsensical reasons like no VR support, no ship interiors, FPS instead of full atmospheric planets, etc. Nothing of that was ever announced to be part of Odyssey, so these people aren't reviewing the game, they are just complaining that they don't get what they want. That reminds me of my 4 years old daughter by the way.

Lots of other people are giving it a bad review because they don't like or are disappointed of the company rather than the game. They are reviewing the poor launch, console support, broken promises, etc. They can hate Frontier as much as they want, it's completely unrelated to the quality of the game.

Many people gave it a bad review for the bad performance and issues at launch / the first few months, without changing it after many problems were fixed.

Of course something similar can be said about positive reviews, many people give it a positive review because they just love the game despite the issues and bugs. Somehow that's not completely unjustified though.

That doesn't mean all negative reviews are irrelevant, but I do have the feeling that Odyssey gets more "undeserved" negative reviews than most other games, simply because the Elite community is very emotional about their game.

PS
Personally I still have mixed feelings about the expansion. Performance and issues are still a problem, so many missed opportunities, bad exploration gameplay, connection between base game and Odyssey is basically not existant (it's like an entirely seperat game within a game), planet tech is not always an improvement - on the other hand it's pretty awesome and unique. No other game manages to do what Elite Odyssey does.
Consumers aren't gaming media. Their feedback is valid when they give it and they are not required to update any of it later. That's why taking in account the recent feedback is the way to go. No use in getting butthurt about a bad review from a year ago when it was posted. I wouldn't expect my feedback to be considered important for purchase decision now, but it was viable and honest back then. Can I be bothered changing it? No - why would I? I'm done with it and I'd rather do something else.

You are perfectly entitled to have that view and I wouldn't say it's wrong. If you are using reviews to claim that Odyssey is crap it's getting problematic though.

I've been lurking in the Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) forums, as that's my current game of passion, and sometimes I swear it's the EDO rather than the ESO forum, as it reads almost identical. Reminds me of a Bon Jovi song, "It's all the same, only the names will change; every day it seems we're wasting away." Same goes for Space Engineers, X4 Foundations, and other games I'm passionate about. And yet these other games don't have the same poor rating that Odyssey does, despite having a very "emotional" player base just like Elite has.

Ironically I tend to be you (a defender to the bitter end) in the Space Engineers Discord, and yet right now my Steam review of SE is a "thumbs down", because of a very serious game-breaking bug that has been plaguing the game after the last update. The words of my review do give credit to how much I normally love the game, but I can't recommend it while this bug goes unpatched. Thankfully I am "emotional" enough about the game that I'll happily change that review to a positive as soon as things are fixed (gotta check on that, btw), which a non-emotional drive-by reviewer would not do.

I haven't bought nor played it and my ire isn't enough to make up rants about ODY. I trust people who played give their honest feedback instead.
So in the end it turns out that your post was completely unrelated to anything I said. That's great, sometimes I do wonder why people are quoting me though, or why they didn't read the rest of the discussion, or if they just want to have a nice conversation and don't know how to start it. ;)

Conversation is good. It may because sometimes I take something without the larger context in which it was posted. But sometimes I just feel like taking some aspect and write about that. That aspect may be thematically related or not so much. In this case it was the remark about ppl not altering their reviews.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't have brought it up in a different context. Erei originally stated that reviews for Odyssey are bad because the game is crap, ignoring the fact that some reviews can't reflect the current state because they've been written before the last 11 updates.

I could review Odyssey, since we got it via Steam, and it probably wouldn't be a 'Bash', at this stage, but since I have to suffer a 'Steam updating', every single time I start the game, it's not a priority.

I think you'd need to have some data to support these claims.
6000 people bought the game just to leave a bad review? That is a bit far fetched.
