After roughly half a year, and following the requests made by numerous forum users, I'm setting up this thread in order to start another 'Essential animals meta-wishlist' where I record users' animals wishlists and put them all together on a meta-wishlist. Given that we've gotten 3 DLCs since I started the previous thread; this time around I ask you all to please post a list of just 25 habitat animals.

The more people participating, the bigger the sample size will be so better conclusions can be drawn. I’m writting down every user who posts their list in order to avoid having repetitions. I intend to keep this updated as much as I can. Last update: 5th April, 2022

Since December 2021:
#Important note 1: Everyone who has submitted an initial list with 20 animals is allowed to vote for 5 additional animals now!#

Since April 2022:
#Important note 2: After every announced DLC, everyone who has submitted X votes to animals that have been added in said DLC can now re-submit an equal number (X) of additional votes ONLY if they quote their original post*1. This 'rule' has a retroactive effect*2; meaning that you can re-submit votes if your animals made it to the NA Animal Pack, Europe Pack or Wetlands Animal Pack.
*1 For people that submitted a list before 25 animals were allowed (so only 20) but then made an additional 5, both posts or a combination of both should be included in the quote.
*2 If I find that any of the quoted posts have been edited recently, I will not allow re-voting animals to this user.#

The spirit and basic rules of the thread will be similar to those of the first one. Which means:
  • For the sake of keeping the same wishlist structure, I ask you to post your 25 essential habitat animals that you’d like to see in the game. Lists with anything above 25 animals will be discarded.
  • Exhibit animals will be omitted from the main meta-wishlist. Exhibit animals include arthropods, amphibians, snakes, other small reptiles (< iguanas), small fish and mouse-size mammals.
  • Flying birds and bats usually housed in aviaries will be omitted from the main meta-wishlist. Flying aviary birds include birds of prey, parrots, Columbiformes (pigeons), Passeriformes (small birds), Charadriiformes (gulls) and so on. Mainly ground-dwelling or semi-aquatic birds (mainly Waterfowl, Galliformes, Ratites, Pelecaniformes, Cranes, Penguins, etc.) will be added to the list.
  • Extinct species will not be considered.
  • As a general rule of thumb, animal species is the preferred category for animal submissions. Subspecies from already in-game animals are also accepted. Subspecies from animals that are not in-game will automatically be allocated to the superior species category. Specific domestic animals breeds are also accepted.
  • To simplify data collection, those answers that include several species in one slot (eg.: 1. Sloth) will be automatically treated as a single animal and added to the most requested species inside that generic animal group (eg. in this case: Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloth). This obviously leads to an underestimation of the total key requested animals.

As you can see, a total of 600 animals have been considered 'essential' by at least one forum user.

TL;DR: Post your 25 essential habitat animals wishlist here. I will record each wishlist and add it to the Meta-list. Aviary and exhibit animals won’t be taken into consideration.

PS: Check darthquell's and Reptomin's new thread for Essential exhibit animals, Spiderhawk's thread for Essential aviary animals and yoav's thread for Essential fully aquatic animals!

First of all I'd like to thank random goat for the invite. I really do enjoy following this thread to keep track of community wishes, but I hadn't considered submitting a list of my own.

Since then, I have been thinking what could be done to make this list of mine unique and came up with an idea. Instead of personal picks, I decided to take Zootierliste's Top 100 Holdings chart and filter out the following:
  • Existing animals that are already in the game
  • Aviary and exhibit animals (including sliders/terrapins), as per the rules of this thread
  • Domesticated animals, as the list would have been dominated by domestic breeds
  • Borderline exhibit/habitat animals like smaller tortoises, despite being allowed on this thread - I'd rather see what Frontier does with these first
  • Fully aquatic animals, despite being allowed on this thread - again I'd like to see how these animals would be addressed
After this procedure, of the remaining animals, I took the first 25 to conjure up a list:
  1. Emu - 600 EAZA holdings
  2. Red-necked wallaby (no subspecific status) - 550 EAZA holdings
  3. Raccoon - 546 EAZA holdings
  4. Golden pheasant - 545 EAZA holdings
  5. Mandarin duck - 476 EAZA holdings
  6. (European) white stork* - 457 EAZA holdings
  7. (European) mouflon** - 453 EAZA holdings
  8. South American coati (no subspecific status)*** - 441 EAZA holdings
  9. Greater rhea (no subspecific status) - 426 EAZA holdings
  10. Black swan - 399 EAZA holdings
  11. African spurred tortoise - 368 EAZA holdings
  12. (Central European) wild boar - 357 EAZA holdings
  13. Silver pheasant (no subspecific status) - 352 EAZA holdings
  14. Wood duck - 347 EAZA holdings
  15. Patagonian mara - 322 EAZA holdings
  16. (Central European) red deer - 317 EAZA holdings
  17. Common marmoset - 314 EAZA holdings
  18. Common pheasant (no subspecific status) - 295 EAZA holdings
  19. (Common) mallard - 289 EAZA holdings
  20. Lady Amherst's pheasant - 281 EAZA holdings
  21. Cotton-top tamarin - 280 EAZA holdings
  22. Indian crested porcupine - 273 EAZA holdings
  23. Mute swan - 256 EAZA holdings
  24. European roe deer - 247 EAZA holdings
  25. Bar-headed goose - 243 EAZA holdings
*Since Zootierliste takes note of the subspecific status of animals in their Top 100 holdings chart and this thread prefers full species ranks, I've put common names for subspecies in parentheses. I couldn't ignore them entirely, since the figures are only for the aforementioned subspecies. When combined with other subspecies, the holdings increase quite a bit (e.g. in the case of the red deer this figure surpasses 500, when it is only 317 for the Central European red deer).
**Had to include common names for invalid and disputed subspecies, due to limitations concerning the website's holdings as explained above.
***When an entry has a "no subspecific status" note in parentheses, this means there are other subspecies defined on Zootierliste's system with separate holdings, so the total may actually be considerably higher (e.g. red-necked wallaby) than the figures specified on the list. Doesn't apply to entries without this note.

Sadly there is no English version of this particular page, so you'd have to translate it using your browser or a third party application if you don't speak German.
I love your approach! And I'm very thankful for the votes for the mouflon, red deer, roe deer, and mara! 👌❤️

I agreed with African leopard, baboon, gibbon and dromedary camel, and not marine iguana since they're never in captivity in real-life. But anyone think that's like too much species before Planet Zoo will no longer show more DLC packs?

I voted for marine iguanas too. It doesn’t matter if they’re in a zoo or not this is a wishlist. They’re allowed to have any animal they want. Plus frontier has showed that real life zoo representation isn’t that important. Let people want what they want. I personally don’t care what’s in captivity in real life I just want cool unique animals and a ton of biodiversity to be showed off

I think you misunderstood the resubmission rules. Out of your original 20, the capybara and Asian small clawed otter made it into the game. You also could add 5 extra animals. So that makes a total of 7 new animals on top of your existing 18 animals in your original list.
You can't replace other old animals in your list, which it appeared you did (the axis deer, barasingha, brown spider monkey, nubian ibex are replaced, though they were not added to the game)

Ahhh, that makes more sense. I assume it'd be OK if I resubmitted my original list with the 5 new animals added, so...

GENERAL LIST:
1. Lar Gibbon
2. Black Rhinoceros
3. Maned Wolf
4. Hamadryas Baboon

20. Black Howler Monkey
21. Scimitar Horned Oryx
22. Caracal
23. Spectacled (or Andean) Bear
24. Shoebill
25. North Island Brown Kiwi

GENERAL LIST:
3. Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloth (I'd prefer Linne's myself but this is our best shot at getting a sloth.
Speaking of sloths, direct votes for the two are really close actually. I did try to skim through just now to get an idea and could count around 50-55 votes for "brown throated three-toed" and "three toed" and around 45-46 votes for "Linnaeus's two-toed" and "two-toed". I might have double counted a few, due to some users reposting their whole list again when making additions and me doing a quick skim through not noticing these, but it does give you an idea on how close the race is. It also depends on how you count the "two/three toed sloth" submissions, and there's a few of these. Good luck to random goat moderating such a huge thread with more than a hundred pages of replies.
