ObsidianAnt: Frontier - What The HECK Is Going On With Elite Dangerous?

I found OA to be rather too uncritical for my taste - I might need to revise that. I guess he's rather a hobby-driven guy, who does it for interest rather than clicks and money: You are excited and positive about a game and it reflects on the videos - but at some point the sentiment may turn over. Maybe we see this now.

To me it boils down to the pace of development. Compared to the other space game (No Man's Sky) which has been solidly getting updated every few months and not just with bugfixing but always with a solid feature addition, and doesn't seem to slow down at all - not only have they managed crossplay but also are working on a nintendo switch port. Meanwhile Frontier is cutting corners, and with it entire sections of the community: VR, Mac, Consoles.

I wish Frontier truly focused on Elite, but it feels like most of their effort/talent has been going into their other games.

Don't knock OA, he provides an essential service to those who are unable to form their own opinions.

I don't pay much attention to any of the 'influencers' - although have enjoyed CMDR Buur's content in the past - as well as joined in with one of his events, it was fun.

Let those who need to be directed enjoy influencer content, it is their right. Although, being honest, I'd rather see a dedicated forum area to link to their offerings, but doubt that is likely to happen.

I get it, that a some will be disappointed in and perhaps upset by messaging that presents as gloom and doom about E.D. that we're all interested in and hopeful for going forward.

My own sense is that this thread's discussion is unlikely to be consequential save for maybe rile up some reponders one way or the other LOL.

Having watched/listened to this particular OA video, I cannot fault the content of the message. It's straight up fair commentary and there's no 'tabloid create drama' going on.
It's not positive and it almost smacks of 'last gasp' hope really. I do not think it is out of order or wrong. I want to disagree with it too but that's not so easy to do.

Personally, it's difficult to say that F.Dev are representing themselves positively currently. The ED experience has huge potential and there's a community crying out for the opportunity to spend their money to experience that potential.

But there's a gap and the bridge over it is shaky at best!

S!

Why you feel the need to post this I don't know. If you wanted to see the doom monster a quick YouTube search would work. No need to publicise it for him.

He long ago decided that the best way to monetise was to be negative not positive.

Don't feed him
I removed my subscription to his doom and gloom video's six months ago. The only reason i see this one is because someone promoted it on here for him. The only videos i am now subscribed to are those from the Burr Pit

So how exactly do you form opinions without input and information, that being from Youtubers, reading books, talking to other humans etc.? You could answer that the ability to form opinions is coded into our DNA, which it probably is, but it still needs a few bits of information to work with.

Youtube contains all sorts of crap, and the definition of "crap" even warries from person to person, but it's not all crap, and when it comes to OA we're far from crap. Crap, in my personal perspective, is something like a teenage girl telling other teenagers how to use botox, or the guy with the wild staring eyes claiming that Earth is flat as a pancake. You also have youtubers like Vsauce, and I wouldn't exactly call him an influencer, unless he "influences" people to stop and think about those everyday things we never have time to wonder about, like what it takes for something to be truly random. Personally I appreciate youtubers like him, and there are many.

So how do you form opinions? :alien: Playing Elite?

Ohai, I'm a bit late to the party thread.

Judging by the number of views

Well, the numbers show that there's much more interest in Elite than SC or MS Flight Simulator. That's good, isn't it?
Only the EVE DOOM video got much more views.

I picked up EVE a short while ago to see what it's about (everyone I know who played it left the game years ago) but I didn't know that there's so much DOOM going on about it.
Fascinating.

I have a rule about games: I do not use spreadsheets :) So EVE is probably not going to keep me for long with the limited free content and a steep $15/month subscription for the rest. I did use the in-game calculator to estimate some profit margins and I felt dirty for doing so.

Yes but we're allowed to criticise, apparently, according to the doom-vid defenders. Can't have it both ways, FDev being allowed to be bashed but their bashers not being allowed to be bashed. that'd be hypocritical.
Must have missed the part where OA calls for a cancellation of Frontier and calls the developers "annoying little creatures".

Looks like the ex-boyfriends can't get over the "betrayal" that their former poster child might say something besides unconditional positivity.

You are wrong.
Just because you understand his service as forming opinions for others, it does not mean that it is so. And by stating that you do two things:
1. you devalue other players, most you dont even know (that I am sure of). Implying they cant think on their own. Thats just arrogant.
2. you show your own prejudice and preformed opinion.

I always took OA videos as a nice summary of the recent development of the game and still decide on my own if I agree or not.

To be fair, while he tried to recognize the good and bad, the video was a bit depressing for sure, but he did raise valid points I think nobody can disagree with completely. Yes, its clear that the frustration has been building, but he is representing a view shared by many.

I do feel Frontier needs to open up a bit more as to what it has planned. Why can they tell us the bad news again and again, and yet justify not releasing a roadmap as they don't want to let people down? Surely at this point its a win / win if they say 'hey guys, this is what we have planned, here's our progress', and just like their recent post about planet tiling, they can say 'sorry, we cant do this right now, it didnt work out', or they can say 'this is going great, we hope to have this done blah blah'.

Say what you will about SC, personally I think SC is a great idea but an atrocious game, but they are very transparent and people feel like its moving ahead and has a future - its a morale boost for gamers despite its joke of a reality at the moment. Frontier need to inject some of that into their game. We all know they don't have the big budget like SC, but it does feel that EDO is pandering along and SC is generating hype & improving, and despite the almost scam like nature of the SC, it still keeps it afloat and keeps people coming back to it.

Frontier has done alot these past few months, I am sure they are asking themselves what more do people want, and I am sure they are scratching their heads saying 'we brought out a new SRV, we gave them space legs, on foot combat, carrier interiors, mission improvements, numerous updates these past 12 months' and people are still bashing us!. Personally I don't care for a new SRV, and I don't own a carrier so it wasn't that relevant to me, but it kept my morale up and made me feel good logging into EDO.

I think Frontier need to put some of their cards on the table here and inject some excitement into the game. Playing a game and even just anticipating up and coming features goes a long way.

The Frontier members we see seem to be really nice people and I am sure they do an amazing job, I don't have anything negative to say about any of them. I feel the problem is at a higher level and I hope that those who make these decisions decide to make some real changes that players will appreciate when it comes to communication.
