I was considering maybe trying it out. Key point was the feature that players wouldn't need their ships for ODY. That means I wouldn't need to break my back with the engineer grinderia. So then came the announcement that they'd do pre-beta or whatsittheycalledit just a mere weeks before release, indicating their product wasn't anywhere near deliverable product.What's interesting (and sad) to me is not so much that these players are gone, but that Odyssey failed to bring them back. I'm not just talking about players in your list, but people I know as well. That was one of Odyssey's goals, to bring players back.
I don't know about your friends, but the ones I'm thinking of were heavily invested in this game at one time, so not your typical drive-by players.
So I abstained. Then came the release. And with that I learned that it just had its very own gear grind loop just like Horizons and I lost the rest of my interest. Also planetary terrain feature tiling, performance etc. But the gear grind killed it for good for me. I've seen enough of that for a lifetime.
