Finally - as I have said many times before, if I was chasing views, then I wouldn't make Elite Dangerous videos at all. Microsoft Flight Simulator, Star Citizen and even No Man's Sky are capable of generating far more views. As it stands, Elite accounts for around 1/4 of my video output. I've produced something like 56 videos so far this year, of which around 12 are for Elite. That's not because I don't still like Elite, I very much like it. Until Frontier change their approach however, the number of Elite videos I produce will continue to decrease.
I am afraid that does not really seem to accurately reflect the reality of your channel. As of April 22 and looking back from that date here is the result for the videos marked as 4 months or less by youtube at that date. There has been just 3 new videos published since then, and views may have changed in the last week obviously, but all in all I would say the below should still be pretty accurate.

There is an extreme view outlier video there for the one about a volcano in MSFS where you had got 594k views apparently. I have taken the figures with and without the top outliers of each game for comparison. Note in both cases Elite seems to be on top of MSFS for views, especially if we don’t count extreme outliers where Elite would double MSFS views.

Views in thousands.

The channel has diversified well but Elite indeed still seems to be among the top topic sources for views (and therefore the “doom” title click baiting, such as "Elite Dangerous a sinking ship?" etc probably playing a significant role). Just remember that these figures are only a 4 months snap shot at April 22nd. Things were probably different in the past and can still change a lot in the future.

ok, so i wasnt the biggest fan of these livestreams due to the absolute lack of any meaningful news. BUT they were better than nothing at all. Please dont fall back into complete radio silence fdev. Please rethink your communication strategy.

Are you saying this is the reason Frontier canceled the livestreams?

Anyway, about time someone posted some Steam Youtube numbers again.

In fairness, a lot of the people complaining about this being canceled were also complaining that they didn't have the content they wanted and found them boring anyways. That said, it's disappointing that after an extended period of complete radio silence (again), Frontier as a company came back with alleged excitement about sharing all the new upcoming news and developments, with a new studio setting for the livestreams, and that lasted (checks notes) four whole streams, which contained absolutely zero development news and insights, before being mothballed again.

Sigh.

Suppose its all hands to the pump for the Warhammer release, and the upcoming F1 management game. Which is understandable to a point, but its just not a good look, is it?

You can't fault the negativity though as it's been coming for a long time. For me, starting with the mess that was the Dec 18 update we move on being told about the next era in ED and while years away, this is going to be the next big DLC.

So we go on, through the loss of GalNet, CGs, the abrupt halt of the Thargoid invasion, the mess that was the Arx update and we continued waiting because this next era is going to be good. Then we see the pre-alpha screenshots and videos and it looks amazing, we can't wait. Unfortunately then the reality hits as PC players find all manner of issues with the alpha, but we keep going because here we're getting an alpha and all this will be sorted at release. It can't possibly be like that silly Cyberpunk game. FDev won't possibly make the same mistake and rush it to release when it's not ready.

Oops.

Then we drag ourselves forward update after update not really fixing the issues and the scope of future development cut, nothing really positive flying about the place and here we are with less and less coming out about what's going on in the game.

Don't get me wrong, EDH is still a great game and I'm sure people have fun with Odyssey too. Just a shame this is where we got to.

For the price of a couple cosmetic suits in ED you can buy entire DLCs in other games.

With the mention that you dont have to do that.
You can play without buying any single piece of cosmetics.

As an extra, you get free arx every week and some not that bad twitch drops.
And as an extra extra, you get free suit cosmetics as you increase in rank

All in all, their policy regarding pay-to-win (or the lack of it) is very very ok with me

Is it really doomsaying when the game was intended to be ending around this time from the beginning and we're just observing that planned event happening as scheduled?

in 2015 fdev said (in their financial reports that were available to anyone to see) this was game franchise that was expected to last until around 2022 (at least in terms of a revenue generating, cost incurring, asset). So we're really living in covid borrowed time now. as planned 7 years ago.

None of what's going on should really be surprising, or seen as hyperbole or fantasy. It's likely the original schedule got pushed back a year or so like everything around covid did for the game but still, it would be like saying that a future release like Odyssey's is fantasy, baiting, and trolling after FDev put out a release saying they were going to release Odyssey in X number of months.

The winding down is happening. It's planned and was made public. Covid delayed some things (foot thargoids) that should have been released by now ...so things are happening a bit out of order but still..it's happening. It wont mean servers shut off, but it will mean real development will basically stop.

Ofc not.
But they can still blow them out of proportions.

for example are you affected by canceled consoles dev? Nope, but you did made a lot of views by having a tabloid titled/thumbnailed video about it
same for tiled planetary surfaces - which you said you are not bothered much about them - but they were another source of clicks

yes, i know, you are just reporting the bad news. but do you?

one of the thumbnails is "frontier is not going to fix planets" - like they're broken beyond reason... when actually planets in EDO are quite fine, tilling is not a big issue - even at launch it was rather rare, now it's even rarer (much of the tilling issues were already patched- literally)
For me the tiling is not an issue. I do not notice it. However, I'm aware that we all perceive things differently, and if you or I did notice tiling, I understand why some people want them fixed. Since it's not "my problem", I can live with it, but I acknowledge that it might be a real problem for some. Not a word about OCD here :alien:

Regarding the communication, or lack of, I think OA sums it up excellently. One has to be very much in denial not to sense the bad mood (spells doom backwards btw), and it is also true that most communication lately has been about things that won't happen after all etc. The lack of any perspective for the players could, as some claim, be because Fdev is working on a big surprise, meant to be a surprise. I understand that, if it really is the case, but then Frontier could calm things down considerably by stating something along the lines of "Relax! Something good is on its way and we won't spoil it before that". By that I don't mean update 12 "containing many fixes and optimization". The game has stalled, and that only works for a certain amount of time. Also, I'm sure that it would not calm down the speculative side of this forum, but it might change the mood in those speculations.

If you're complaining on a youtube video about Odyssey planetary tech, while playing videos of stunningly beautiful Odyssey planetary terrain to draw and keep views, the complaints ring kind of hollow.

There are a ton of new things in the last year, Odyssey planetary tech and other graphical improvements, 11 updates improving performance and stability, the new Scorpion SRV, FC interiors - that list also goes on and on.

That being said, if the reason can't be discussed, it might be nice for the cancellation to say something like "Streams unfortunately have to pause for right now, but we enjoy them and want to get back to them as soon as we can," or whatever is appropriate to the facts. Clearly we like the streams, and the cancellation does feel somewhat abrupt and vague.

No community interactions due to cancelled livestreams
Let me take that a step further and just simply say "no meaningful community interaction at all."

Remember back in the days of Educating Ed? Remember when CM's would routinely post in threads and interact with the community? I realize that at some point "the glory days" will always go away but my goodness is the contrast stark. In our current situation's CM's only post update threads and bad news, with the occasional damage control...and now the Lead for the team, who didn't even log into the forum for over one month, is now posting to twitter that he feels like he's walking into a firing squad.

It's a sad story all around and I do feel for the CM team. Truly.

Save me a spot on Turkey Ledge...I've begun the ascent.

Unfortunately, people are going to think whatever they are going to think. It's unlikely my explanation will change your mind in any manner whatsoever. We are also going way off-topic here, but seeing as you are diving further into the data - let me give you some context.

The best type of video a YouTuber wants - are "evergreen" videos. These are videos that make views month on month, year on year.
The second best type of video are viral videos (like the MSFS volcano video you mentioned)
The third best type is not about views, but about whether the video generates new subscribers (it's more important to build audience, then it is to build views)
The forth best type is to generate long-term interest in a particular series of videos (this requires a topic that has long term interest with a subject that has a long term future).
The fifth best type of video is to generate good engagement via comments
The sixth best type is to generate a lot of views on any random subject

Different YouTuber's will see it in a different way.

From the 1st of January 2022 to 28th April, my channel has generated 5.4 million views. This comes from a combination of the above video types I mentioned. Generally speaking the higher up the list the video is, the more long term views it will generate.

Elite does okay for my channel (more than ok), but the bulk of those 5.4 million views do not come from new Elite videos, they come from older Elite videos, and videos on other games. The "clickbait" Elite titles which seem to bother people account for a very small percentage of this over all number.

In my top 20 videos of all time, Elite features just 3 times - and not even near the top.

If I chase a specific type of video, it is these ones (in the image).

A "clickbait" video that generates 100k views over the course of 5 or 10 days, is neither here nor there and from my perspective is small fry.

As I have said before - if I run my channel on YouTube Clickbait (as some people incorrectly believe), then I would be making far more controversial videos than I currently do. MSFS, Star Citizen and No Man's Sky generate far better controversial titles, and views than Elite. But creating controversy isn't what I'm interested in. If Frontier make stupid mistakes, then I will talk about those stupid mistakes. If Microsoft, Asobo, Hello Games and CCP make stupid mistakes, then I will talk about them too (just like the recent EVE video).

The fact Frontier seem to make more mistakes than all the others combined is certainly a factor in why there are more "negative" Elite videos than there are for other games. :)

EDIT: And just because you got me curious - I just dug into the stats. New Elite videos have generated 835,541 views between 1st January and 28th April (out of a total of 5,400,000 in the same period). So, it accounts for an even smaller percentage of my total views from the same period than I had realised.
