What do you mean with "Galaxy mapping coming to an end"?
If I loved a game to the point of playing 8000 hours Id get a GFN sub and just send it the Xbox. There ya go, EDO on console. All you need is account transfer and you are good to go. If you only play smaller sessions shorter than an hour it's even free, otherwise a tenner a month.
I've been playing since early beta, but a few months ago I stopped. I'm not sure why, but I wasn't getting anything out of the game. I guess I was burnt out.
But, just this morning I've dug out my hotas and I'm patiently waiting for my game to update. How long I'll play for I don't know; maybe a couple of days, maybe another 8 years.

I think the OP meant the Galaxy mapping project is coming to an end (LINK), actually its entering maintenance mode. But as always, some people blow things out of proportion and think its the end of actual exploration in Elite lol (not the OP, but others who commented about it without comprehension).

Can't be much of a "veteran" when a buggy mess of broken promises calls them. Sounds more like desperation.
Don’t forget HORIZONS is still available, the game you played for 8,000 hours and loved.
Ironically, once the codebases merge? Console's gonna be all the rage for folks who didn't want Horizons to ever be changed or updated. Old planet tech, old UI, hooning, it'll all be there like a living time capsule for the folks who harumph about these darn kids with their first person shooters and their hip hop music.
Hopefully, you will occasionally return to both the game and the forums. You clearly invested a lot of time into the game, and care about the product.

Distant worlds is kill, the galactic mapping project is kill, everything discovered in Horizons exists on borrowed time, they won't fix the repeating terrain in Odyssey, ... it kinda is reaching the end of actual exploration.
Closure I would guess my good man. Although I have never in my long time of gaming, have issued a goodbye thread myself, to each their own, and everyone has their reason(s). I hope this brings you some understanding, on Life, the Universe, and Everything.
There's a hip-hop score? Might be worth suffering through an order of magnitude less FPS to at least check out.
