Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The tech CIG have said they started working on a few days ago is already in the game and once they are done developing it they will use it in the game?

Haven't seen this much manure since CIG's last roadmap.
The tech in game is sheet deformation with fixed points, not unattached sheets.

Now that some of you have spent pages badmouthing Drew Wager, can we spend a few pages diagnosing Thistle and his buddies? It seems like he sat on a cactus recently. I wonder what is wrong with him...

Or you could all just go back to demonizing Chris Roberts, at least that would be on topic ;)
Where did you get my photo from?

CIG spend a LOT of ressource on the engine and tools part. It's a bet on the future for the company, CR not only want to make a good game with SQ42 but also a good engine for all future projects of the company. My personnal though about it is they want to have an engine as powerful as RAGE developped by Rockstar. So, spending ressource on sheet deformation or cart wheels is empowering the engine (as the 64bit position, Raymarching tech, Cloud/Gaz tech, Planet tech, Building Block, Subsumption tech, gen 12 renderer, Entiity graph, Vulkan, Server meshing, The bridge to Houdini, etc).
I'm a cynic, I know. But even if I assume it's true that there is a plan to create a new world-beating engine to develop multiple future games, it would be on the backs of whales buying expensive jpegs for THIS game. I'm sure many would say they were happy for their money to be spent this way though.

I don't think there is such a plan though, I think everything from 2012 until today is just developers trying to turn Chris Roberts ever-changing desires into actual code. Build some nice graphics, sell ships, profit. Oh, and you know, put it together as a game.

Then again, perhaps I just don't understand development.

The Nomad is a decent little ship...which now carries a ROC minus the exploding or the ROC falling off the back of it when flying. The Cutty was always my favourite for dragging a ROC around, but this trebuchet ramp palaver is getting a bit old....although I haven't had it happen too often...the same with ships blowing away. Saying that, I took the Hull A up to one of Microtech's moons last night and it tipped over onto it's side in the wind. Fortunately, once I loaded the cargo, it straightened itself out :)

Cargo has mass, proved :)

The cargo refactor should bring many new games. Ship tilting. Futsal…

And new ways to die foolishly ;)

My main gripe with 3.17...for the moment... is missing store bought paint jobs (registered in my hangar page, not there in game) or non functional inventory stuff. It really is doing my head in 😐

For what we now, bedsheet deformation is for SQ42 NPC, not for SC. Some theory crafting (little pleasure) : I think CR wants some sort of scenery where sleeping military NPC have to wake up in hurry with the bedsheets falling in a realistic way. Could be impressive if well done.
I personally would never call hospital corners and their deformation impressive, I question the need for the development of this sort of functionality , especially when there are so many other critically fundamental things to sort. Maybe if the game was almost complete and ahead of schedule. But from everything I have read and seen to date it just seems to be a misdirected use of resource.

The guy doing bedsheet deformation can only be assigned to tasks related to its domain of expertise. No one know if this guy can be helpful on other tasks on the actual SQ42 alpha.
Yes "there are so many other critically fundamental things to sort", but which critical thing this particular guy can work on ? If he's not helpful on any of those tasks, CIG should fire him or try to add a new capability to its engine ?

So what exactly what were these guys doing before they suddenly decided to do bedsheet deformation, nothing? You don't have a team just sitting there doing nothing waiting for an opportunity to use their particular set of skills that apply nowhere else in the game except bedsheet deformation. I am sure they were working on something before they decided to go in this direction.

I'm yet to see anyone say a nice thing about the inventory ;)

I'm still running with the Zenimax-dev's theory that it's just a straight representation of the new entity grouping system (for the 'entity graph' / networking etc).

What you're seeing, and part of the reason they were able to get the UI for the inventory up relatively quickly, as a stop gap, um, is all they're effectively doing is showing you all the entities inside a thing. It's probably already a widget they had around because it's used in their tools.

So it was quick to introduce. But possibly not really that flexible from that point on. IE the system has no reason to sort all items by 'type'. It's very reason to exist is to keep track of every single individual item within nested entities.

So... huge lists of things it is ;)

And ? For sure he was working on another task before this one. A task now done as he's assigned to another..

This guy was doing stuff for SQ42 and as SQ42 approach the beta stage, perhaps all tasks in his domain of expertise are in a "completed" status. Bedsheet deformation could have been assigned to him because no other task is available for him while SQ42 is still perhaps 1 year from release.
So CIG can give ressource to a small scope tech with him (because bedsheet is really a small scope, you don't have bedsheet awaiting to be deformed every 10 meters).
You know, whole teams of experts can have nothing more to do in a beta once all tasks they were assigned to are done and stable and all remaining tasks are outside of their expertise. In big studios, you switch those teams on other projects. For CIG, they only have 2 projects and SQ42 has priority over SC. When you build a house, once you start to paint the wall, the mason have nothing left to do, so letting him work on some small tasks like a concrete fence is just ressource managment. The other way is to end his contract.

I'm almost sure that the planet tech team has nothing more to do for SQ42, but this team have a lot to do for SC. You suggest the guy working now on bedsheet deformation should be working on something else  while knowing nothing about the state of SQ42 and nothing about his expertise :cautious:
