I Confess - I have upgraded no EDO FPS gear.

The most frustrating part for me is that most of the engineering effects are just boring.

I compare to the experimental effects you can get for your ship weaponry, and they do all sorts of cool things; adding heat when you hit their Shields, or scrambling their targeting, or knocking them around. Then I look at the on foot experimental effects and it's just, like... more ammo. Or more headshot damage. Before, these would be things you would engineer for on the most basic level, not so called experimentals.

Where's the cool stuff? I want my plasma shots to explode, or to turn my kinetic pistol into a shotgun pistol, or to change my laser rifle from discrete shots into a continuous beam. That sort of thing. Not just statistical improvements while the gun continues to behave in exactly the same way.

Borderlands clearly goes too far for a game as serious and realistic as this one, but I think a lot can be drawn from the way they make their weapons interesting. Legendary Weapons don't just have better stats, almost every single one has something that makes them unique and different, requiring the player to learn how to use them to their best effect.

I've gotten all my engineers, and upgraded all my suits and weapons that I use to G5 with full experimentals, but I would be perfectly happy having to unlock all of them all over again, if it meant being able to add actually interesting effects to my weapons and suits.

Since a few months after Odyssey release, I had fully upgraded and modded seven suits and nine weapons, so I'd never have to do it again.
Though, I might do another Karma L-6, so I can have a 2x L-6 loadout, but I'll not grind for it but take what I make over the months or years anyway.
For the grind I used Inara to help me keep track of everything, including planned equipment.
Maybe it can still be helpful to somebody: https://inara.cz/galaxy-logbooks/61673/

Well I've only been playing Ody for a short while but I've kinda thrown myself into the FPS stuff.

I have to say with the G3 suits / weapons available at the pioneer store you're pretty much ok. Running High CZs on foot, I was doing pretty well in a G3 Dominator and G3 weapons, mostly without mods. Yes there are things that would make the experience better, a few QoL mods that would make certain missions easier, but 'needed'...no.

I've not tried exobiology but I can't imagine the Artemis suit needing anything engineered or really modded at all, you're mainly staring at plants. Maybe the reduced tool drain, or improved battery but if you're next to your SRV the whole time...why bother?

On the other hand...what the hell else is there to do with this gear but upgrade it...and in typical FD fashion they've doubled down on bad design to make it a mountain of grind, relogging and counter intuitive gameplay for anyone who wants to travel that road. I do however applaud the addition of pre-upgraded and engineered gear...meaning you really don't have to...that was a nice touch from FD.

I didn't upgrade anything yet, I don't have problems playing with the stock gear either though. I just started buying G3 stuff but didn't have the time to try it yet.

The thing that puts me off most is that we can't swap mods.

Ah, I see few people reached the grind end game already. Congratulations! I’ve only made first steps. Got maverick and executioner to G4. Exhausting 😅 Before doing another Everest of grind, got to ask… What is your favourite jack of all trades weapon combo? Looking for something good in both pve and pvp to carry around with maverick.

I've not tried PvP but PvE - AR-50 with the Tormentor sidearm works pretty well in most situations. You could also go with the TK Zenith sidearm (laser) which is easier to use but less effective overall.

I still haven't unlocked all of the ship engineers and to be honest I don't think I've fully upgraded any ship yet. On the other hand I've unlocked most of the bubble engineers in Odyssey (just the lack of SDPs stopping me ) I've got at least one of each suit upto G5. Not fully modded yet, but I have a selection of pre-installed and engineer installed mods. Similar situation with weapons, examples of every type of laser and most plasma weapons (only exception for now is the Oppressor) up to G5, kinetics up to G4, except for my trusty carbine which is G5. I really should be playing more, but I've been busy with other things.

My most used weapon would be my G5 Tormentor with noise suppression, audio masking and extended magazine, ideal for pve. I'd pair it with something kinetic, AR-50 is good, maybe the C-44 if you prefer to get close and personal. Executioner is good for scav hunting and even ok for combat zones. Zenith plus a kinetic long arm is a decent general purpose combo if your aim isn't so good, though not so great if you are trying to be stealthy. I haven't tried it, but Intimidator and P-15 could be a good combo. I would say that audio masking is almost a must have for the Executioner.

Its because odyssey is pointless and there is literally no reason to upgrade your FPS gear. Its the massive elephant in the room that idk how people are still able to ignore.

Yep - it's true. Three accounts, ship engineers unlocked on all of them. Reset one and re-unlocked the ship engineers and Corvette and Cutter x4. All Guardian gear unlocked. Thousands of hours in.
I think I tried the on foot conflict zone once and a legal on foot mission once too. In both cases I failed. And i play ED since release day in 2014 with over 9400 hours in total. The on foot stuff just confused or annoyed me. I don't want to charge my suit all few moments to continue fighting or run around with no idea how to just open a door. I think one of the main reasons I struggle with ED nowadays are the far too many keybindings ED got even from day one. it bacame even worse with horizons and odyssey!

I dunno? What's the point of anything? Maybe it dulls the pain of this meaningless existence? Maybe some of of us find it entertaining? Maybe we don't? Maybe we cry ourselves to sleep in the dark, broken by the sheer futility of upgrading our gear, bereft of meaning, wondering how much richer our lives would have been if we'd spent the time we'd invested upgrading our imaginary space guns reading Nietzsche or learning to crochet? Who knows, dude, who knows?

Eh, alright, here's my confession: I don't do a lot of on-foot stuff but all the stuff I've done (since the Alpha), I've generally enjoyed. I have a lot of fun with the stealthy side of ground missions, and I very much enjoy the occasional settlement on-foot CZ.

If Odyssey's FPS elements were the entire game, I might decry it as mediocre or too bare bones. But thing is; it isn't the entire game. I enjoy throwing on-foot stuff into the mix of other missions or activities I choose to engage in at any given time. I like getting out of my ship to have a little stretch and do something at a settlement. It's a nice extra layer that makes the whole experience feel a little more interesting, when taken as part of a whole.

Oh, and I know this is weird, but I'm not in a hurry to engineer any of my equipment. I've been upgrading at the Pioneer Supplies shop bit by bit, and picking up the occasional pre-upgraded piece. All my gear works just fine and I feel capable of getting the job done. I've got ideas in mind for engineering different pieces of kit to create different specialized load-outs, but that's for my own personal enjoyment and has not once felt like a requirement to be able to do anything.

So yeah. My confession is that I think Odyssey's a pretty fun layer on top of an already fun game that I'm enjoying the experience of. And I'm a bit sad that more folks don't see it that way, but that's their right I guess.

I went to a shop on a station once and bought a gun, then realised I really had zero interest in the FPS elements introduced in Odyssey. Indeed, if I didn't have the lifetime pass thingy I'd not have bothered with Odyssey at all. I do always launch Odyssey as opposed to Horizons now, as I've gotten used to the UI and prefer it in some ways. Plus I was of the impression that I might as well get used to it now, rather than be forced to do so at a later date. Also, performance is ok for me in the purely spaceship stuff I do, albeit not quite as nice looking - several of my paint jobs are RUINED - as in Horizons, but things have improved somewhat.

Oh, I did teleport (cos that's what we do) out of my ship and walk around outside on a planet's surface once. I quite liked that for the two minutes the activity lasted...then it was (teleporting) back to pure spaceship stuff. Glad there are people who enjoy the FPS aspect, but it's really not for me. I would be potentially interested in more thing to do on foot, like walking around inside my spaceship for example - anyone suggested that yet? I'll save the pew pew for spaceships though...unless something changes to inspire me to try it on foot.

Btw: I've never actually fired that gun I bought...

Goofed around with a few on foot missions, but dang - I just can't do it. I got the Hush and unlocked the first engineer, but then - stopped.

I'm not even sure if the engineering time is equivalent between the FPS gameplay and the ship gameplay - I'm just not interested in EDO FPS the way I am in CP2077, Warzone, Doom, ME etc.

Digging around in lockers and waiting for uploads - it's just awful. You don't even loot bodies.

Yes I have my blue shiny suit from Exobio. Might slooooowly grind on that.

I had a blast doing ship anti Xeno last night, but the thought of that EDO FPS "shudder" - no.

Who else want to confess their sins of playing EDO and shunning the FPS and FPS engineering? Spill it.
I didnt even buy the DLC, lol.

My main point being that the activites and rewards provided by Odyssey dont enhance the ED game play experience, and the entire odyssey content is only self serving.

For example, if i spent 20 hours doing nothing by odyssey content, what does that get me? The ability to do the same odyssey content, but better.
If i spend 20 hours doing horizon content, what does that get me? The ability to upgrade my ship to do what other activities i want to do.

Thats the problem with odyssey content, its disconnected from the rest of ED, Horizon content would actively make it so you could fight better, fly faster, jump farther, hold more cargo, manuver better, scan better, be more effective in your equipment, it let you play the parts of the game you were most interested in, but better, horizon tied the content back to the ship.

Odyssey lacks this, nothing you do in odyssey ties back to the ship, your ship is nothing but a taxi service to get from point to point, it does not activly do anything for your on foot experience, nor does anything on foot effect your ship activates.

If they would have made it so like, specific on foot items were required to make new modules then we are talking but they did not.

Thats my biggest gripe with Odyssey even worse then the performance is that is so isolated from the rest of ED.
