Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I'm going to be heading back from Colonia soon, I'm taking a fleet carrier from Tir back to the Bubble. Nice place overall, just need to do a lot more oddy missions to get the stuff I need to upgrade suits. I will need to do some ship engineering too before I go back there again. Taking 2 extra ships with me too, I picked up an Asp Explorer to do mining and a Cobra MkIII as a small ship is good for doing oddy missions with.

The mat requirements of personal equipment is outrageous. Just to prepare you :D
I remember the Yamiks video - 27 hours to speed grind fully grade 5 engineering one suit.
I am not going to be doing that. I might do a little to improve some functions to grade 1 or 2 if doing such a thing ever becomes higher priority than other things I want to do.
I don't seem to have any issues doing Exobiology in a stock Artemis suit. I'm also not going to habitually do criminal things to engineer personal equipment.
FDev are meant to be reworking a major feature of the game. Maybe we they will make engineering and especially personal equipment engineering more palatable.

For the Artemis, no you really need the suit only. G3's are pretty common but you don't really need them in exo.

On not doing crim things: you could do power restore missions - although some have scavs but killing them is legal, perfectly justfiable and gives you a nice warm feeling whilst they are dispatched with extreme prejudics - as these can be treasure troves for materials.

Mmm, power restore for a Federation faction to get some rep++ in the deal works well for me right now. I think I'm looking for infrastructure failure state in a federation system to do this.

I can't imagine it being anything other than that.

But then, I'm only thinking as a lowly player who doesn't know what's best for me.

I also suspect that the new mission type will be for on-foot play.

Yes, it's a strange oversight/decision. I feel like they forgot everything that was learned from ship engineering when they designed the on-foot engineering. We can't trade everything. We can't remove/replace engineering. We have fixed cap limits on overall storage rather than individual items, and etc. I get the impression that a new team designed the stuff for Odyssey and didn't really understand the history of engineering.

Oh well. Do more missions! Sometimes you can get 5 MI's for one mission. I was able to get the ones I needed mostly by doing that.

One annoying thing I found in the last week or so is that on several of the "new" stations (the ones upgraded etc) the design team is presumably new and didn't know that the slot is supposed to point to a place above (below) the body's south pole. So instead we have these things (like Mawson Dock in Doromi) that point along the station's orbital path - it is frustrating.

Late last year FDev asked for feedback on ship engineering. So I hope that is the major rework they are talking about, and with luck, they'll make the on foot engineering less abusive of player time than it is now, and give more non-criminal options for doing it. I just don't want to get into it right now, but short periods of time off a ship on foot somewhere I've flown to is welcome. That's why I quite like the Exobiology.

EDIT: this is a major update due early next year, note Update 12 that's coming very soon.

I left my expert opinion/internet ravings in that feedback thread, and the fact that they even asked is the reason I had a little hope that they were both listening and had some intention of acting. I still haven't been playing but I have been paying a little more attention to updates and the like.

If it turns out that the update is not a rework of engineering, then I could only assume that they're either happy with the size of the playerbase as it is or they're okay with the game dying on the vine. I don't feel like it'd be the latter though. You could just let it drift off into that long dark night without updating through to next year.

It'd also be a massive shame because I've never seen another space sim with as much potential as Elite since playing it in the early 90's. I want them to be number one.

Well to be fair, only g4/g5/mods are having insane reqs, g2 and g3 are not really complex, or, a chain of Apex runs checking shops in a system with a number of stations on Thursday while doing something else isn't really a big thing. Idk for sure, but from my feeling a rather big number of stations do spawn modded equipment (seen up to 3, and that's in each section) at reset, maybe even all of them, question is if you're the first person checking that shop. In fact i guess at these times not much ppl even take unmodded g2 and even g3 due a wish for mods too.

The only one real need of g5 is ground pvp. Also for completion sake, ok, but the fact that completion is expensive is excusable. I did wipe with my g3 gear while clearing a big military base (i guess that'd be the hardest thing, CZs seem much easier), but it is possible in g3. I did return there later with another mission and made it. P

Looking to make modded g4 and g5 is a little heavy though i agree. It just looks like some either not-counted-well (bugged basically) stuff, either some artificial walls from the devs. Like want a g3 Dom? Sure, check the shops, bet you'll have it tonight, if not, try next week. And then you hit Opinion polls point, those you'll do by Xmas.
