Horizons / Odyssey Compatibility

But they are not killing console Elite, they are just not going to try to make Odyssey run on now ancient hardware.
You mean they haven’t announced killing it yet. They literally said they didn’t want to maintain two code bases. Discontinuing console Elite is a logical consequence.

Oh you didn’t really believe they were giving out free PC copies of the game to console transferees out of the good of their hearts, did you?

Frontier has said like a dozen times that they have no plans on pulling support for Horizons on consoles. They also said their energy is going into the Odyssey codebase, so yes, they do say they want to focus on just one codebase, but what they have refused to say despite many of us asking over and over again is if or when Horizons will be replaced with the Odyssey codebase on PC or allowed to exist as-is just like on consoles.

Ironically what they are giving away is HORIZONS (the legacy version, not Odyssey Lite), which makes sense because they know anyone willing to move to PC because Odyssey isn't coming to console is doing so to buy Odyssey on PC. So all Frontier is giving away is the ability for console players to pay for the new DLC. That's money in Frontier's pocket that they wouldn't have otherwise if migrating from console to PC wasn't made as easy as possible.

I really ought to make a thread or something explaining that Horzions and Odyssey do not equal ED 3.x and 4.x respectively.

Tell that to the launcher. ;)

It is a shame that the only official way to launch 4.0 is in Odyssey and 3.8 is in Horizons/base game mode, as it's a good part of the reason such confusion arises. Unofficial methods needn't be concerned with those restrictions though; it is possible to launch 4.0 in base game mode using the same command-line parameters used to launch 3.x in base game mode. There's also a paramater to run it in Horizons mode. And that's what'll be used, should Frontier ever ditch the 3.8 client as they planned to...

Does that actually work? As in, restricting you to base / Horizons features correctly?
Sort of. I didn't play around for long, but I noticed that base game mode disables Horizons features (Holo-Me, Engineers, etc), disables landable planets completely, and makes the role/crotch panel disappear entirely.
Horizons mode seems to just remove the disembark tab of the role panel; you can still land on atmospheric planets, and the Scorpion still works.
In both modes you can still walk around on-foot if you logged out while on-foot.

None of this should be taken to be indicative of what will and won't be possible if Horizons properly moves over to the 4.0 client, of course. I suspect they haven't put much work into the non-Odyssey modes in 4.0 yet...

Well my working theory was that it flat out didn’t work; seems like the bare bones were ported over, but they haven’t put the work in to, well, make it work. Which would be the last thing they need to do before they can kill off Horizons (the client, not the mode) for good.

I suspect the "client merging" and using the Odyssey client for horizons and the base game will disable certain features pretty much like the base game disables certain things for Horizons.
But not sure they will do it, i mean why would they? They still need to maintain the client for Consoles, so why not for PC users, especially since some PC users still run potato pc that cannot run EDO properly

I'm a bit confused. Are you saying that if I were to buy Odyssey, I would lose Horizons Legacy and get a Horizons "mode" (Odyssey Lite) in its place? I didn't think this was the case. If it is, then I'm definitely not buying Odyssey. You'll have to pry my true Horizons out of my cold dead hands :p

But I'm very skeptical of your claim. Anyone else care to weigh in?

They haven't said anything about merging the Horizons/Beyond playerbase into Odyssey for months now. I don't know if they're still going to do it.

If I'm reading DrinkyBird's post correctly, they already have for those who bought Odyssey. How else could one launch Horizons and yet land on an atmospheric planet?
