Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Seven Sisters Speedway Remixed 17th - 27th June 3308 (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 5)

The only issue I see with this race is that if you are not anywhere near to getting a podium then you will really have to run the bonus race in unlimited to get any points. That will be a very stiff challenge indeed.
I've been thinking of trying a system like this for a while, but haven't had the opportunity to host a Lonnigan Bros race recently.

In the past I've kept my "silly stuff" - which began with Mrs Lonnigan's Spa Challenge at the very first full length BRC race - separate from the main leaderboard.

Indeed back then in 3301 I received an angry email from "the Old Kligg" himself, telling me it's okay to include silly things like that, as long as serious racers aren't expected to join in!

I definitely wanted to include Lonnigan shenanigans this time though, and didn't want a seperate non-scoring leaderboard for them.

So, my philosophy is:
  1. The fastest run should always win the race - in this case I extended that to all the podium/medal spots.
  2. I realised that for anyone (like me!) who is always happy to just finish in the #onepointclub, it really doesn't matter whether you attempt the shenanigans or not. Just race whichever way you find most fun. :D
  3. Rather than making optional bonuses where you need to work out if you can do them quick enough to be worth the bonus, I made them so that they're ALL always worth doing, even if you're slow, but the key is to find ways to do them fast to maximise the bonus.
  4. I kept in Tony and Nuk's traditional BBQ and Suicidal Docking challenges from my past races, and made sure the bonuses were big enough to make you really want to risk damaging your ships for (they made me do it, honest! 😇).
  5. I like the jeopardy of the mixed leaderboard, although I appreciate it's not ideal if you don't fancy the shenanigans at all and wouldn't expect a podium finish. That wouldn't have been any different if shenanigans had been used for every position though. I'm interested to see how 3rd and 4th place work out.
I will provide two separate (with and without shenanigans) leaderboards at the end of the race - just for fun - so everyone will be able to see how they'd have done without my silly race philosophy.

One thing that I am going to change is that I'm deleting the "times will be obfuscated until the end" bit, because (a) the race is crazy enough as it is, and (b) quite a few regulars like to stream their runs live.

I'll be posting a clarified FAQ later today, based on questions from here and the Discord - and to move the existing FAQ out of spoiler tags and into it's own post.

The FAQ will include @Alec Turner's brilliant demonstration of how to combine the Zen Archer and Like an Elite Racer shenanigans:

Less than two hour to go now until the race starts.

I've added a link in the OP to the Google Form used for run submissions.

I've also moved the FAQ to post#2 and added a few answers to questions that have cropped up, including a little help for those concerned about approaching the Thargoids.

Off on holiday tomorrow and lots of preparation to do so I was up at 5am this morning with just enough time to squeeze in a single Regulation Cobra run.

First thing I did was practice Nuk's Coup de Grâce. Five shieldless practice boosts through the slot, five landings I could walk away from, each with around 30% hull remaining.

Awesome ... let's get this done!

Presenting - Seven Sisters Speedway - a "Win It Or Bin It" Buckyball adventure.

Have a great week everyone - I'll try to keep up with proceedings as and when I get wifi but I doubt I'll get around to updating the championship points leaderboard until the end of the month.

Recon run - haven't lost my ship so far, but taking it very slow. Locals have even rolled out the red (ok, checkered) carpet for us:

Well despite the carnage current taking place both in the Pleiades and particularly the docking bay of Ohm Horizons, I have received four submissions from commanders who have completed their runs.

The first race summary and leaderboard post will be made tomorrow evening (and then daily until the end of race), but here is a quick summary those who made it safely to the finish line at Ohm Horizons:
(Note: I was out of the house all day today, so I haven't verified all the evidence yet, therefore these four runs are "pending review" for now).

First to log a successful run was cmdr @Homborger in regulation Cobra, who held the lead for about six hours before being overtaken by cmdr @FearlessF21.

In unlimited class meanwhile cmdr Sulu (@Fish172) is making an astonishing and magnificent attempt to burn through all the billions he made at the recent CG in insurance fees, but nonetheless managed to survive two runs - 1 with 9/10 shenanigans, the other without shenanigans.

Little Nuk is watching gleefully from the bar in Ohm Horizons as Sulu continues his attempts to defeat the challenge of Nuk's Coup de Grâce and become the first cmdr to register a perfect 10/10 shenanigans. o7 Sulu!

Sorry things ended the way they did Alec, but it was a great run till that point :)

I managed to get on the course this morning. Thought I'd get at least one standard Regulation run under my belt. It went surprisingly smoothly and I didn't really have many issues, other that trying and failing to squeeze past a Beluga in the mailslot leaving Obsidian Orbital (bloody tourists clogging up the place).

We'll have to see how the run stacks up, but it's great to be back in the Pleiades. I love this place 😊

The Pleiades Cluster is my favourite object in the night's sky, and it's also the first place I went in the game starting on the first day of Gamma, in a poorly thought out Cobra Mk. III with an 11Ly jump range. So it's great that I'm now here almost 8 years later, racing out there in a stock Cobra once again :)

Also it's a bit hard to take a screenshot in the middle of a race ;) but Stargazer is looking particularly beautiful.

Well, at least I was in first place for a small while! Blog is virtually done, just waiting for the leaderboard so I can post it at the bottom. Thank you for organising such a great race and apologies that my run was so dull. Apart from the three hyperdictions. Blast those damn 'Goids!
