Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

(...)
After all the only real thing you can lose is your data. And not paying attention (i. e. relog if you care or you can lose too much) can cost the explorer while negligently landing on a high G world too, that needs to be adressed anyway. Everything else recovers in no time.

For me as devoted explorer natural dangers are acceptable as part of my game role, I'm failing few times underestimating some situation. Simply repay ship, dust off and go on - lesson accepted.

There are a lot (and I mean A LOT) of people who think it great fun to hang-out in busy systems looking for easy-meat just for the LULZ of blowing them up. What gives them pleasure is the knowledge that they have caused irritation and annoyance to someone else. They are not looking for one-on-one combat, not even role-playing a pirate, they are just anuses*.

(I was going to use a particularly apt extremely vulgar Latin description but I figure some smart-alec might report it and get me banned for swearing.)
I'm chuckling to myself at the ganker stories here but I kind've appreciate them. They're annoying as a newbie but they kind've act as beta testers once you played a bit.

Though I'm crap in combat. I usually just use them to test how fast my ship can run from a fight.

That is one of the bad guys out of the movie 'Big Trouble in Little China'. A cult classic staring Kurt Russel.

Yup!

@Codger it,'s not hair by the way. It's a completely ridiculous, over-the-top straw hat :D

He is one of the three Storms and his demise is rather unique :D

Although the film is quite old now, it really holds up well and more than worth a watch. Give it a go!

Edit: not quite sure what happened to the formatting in this post

This one I address with 662MJ shields on my exploration ship with G5 heavy duty + deep plate on the light alloy armour too. It costs me nearly 2ly jump range to do it, but there's not much difference to travel time 70.48ly vs 72.?ly jump range. I tested in crash landing on Archenar 3 (I think that's the 6G planet) a while back. I think about 350MJ is probably enough unless you really fall asleep at the flight controls.

Well more MJ is better in any case, unless it's adding too much weight. Regarding armor, i've heard that only % damage matters, i. e. making it + integrity should do nothiing then. I still do heavy duty / deep plate on my explorers, but idk for sure. Maybe someone will correct that.

Finally I recognise your avatar picture :ROFLMAO:
I thought he looked familiar. It's been a long time since I watched Big Trouble In Little China, but it was one on those on VHS tape I watched a few times in my late teens not long after it came out in 1986.
I'm a sucker for anything with magic in it.

I'm no good with weapons like rail guns and only marginally better with PAs which seem to be required to win at good levels of PvP combat. If I'm travelling around and likely to encounter other players, I'm almost certainly not in a ship built for PvP combat. So the idea seems good, but in practice, it can't work unless its a prearranged event which then makes no sense in my game story telling world.
I'll stick to PvE combat where I can pretend I'm a god of war blowing stuff up with beam lasers and multi-cannons. I had fun yesterday with a FAS and fixed mount frag cannons engineered to grade 1 or 2. The rest of the FAS isn't fully engineered in its defences yet, so I got blown up a couple of times forgetting that ramming in unengineered light alloys is a bad move. The FAS seems to want to ram things.

For explorers, heavy duty deep plate on light alloys for extra absolute damage hit points and then on shields just going for the highest absolute MJs you can within the weight limit you want to keep to best defends you from the surface of a planet hitting you. Resistances like kinetic are meaningless on armour and shields for an exploration ship.

Clarify yourself. ;)

I'm good at being target practice for railguns. One of my last days doing the combat thing, I would scan the miners in the area so I could keep track of their shield strength to see if they are being attacked. There was a wing of 2 and their names were Mr. Target and Ol fireball, I kept thinking about that and couldn't stop laughing.

Decided to visit Barnards Loop but dropping in on Witchead Nebula on the way. And Quain thinks CHLOE SEDESI is kinda cute and SHENVE is just outside the Witchhead Nebula so dropped in there.

Cinder Dock seems to have had a indoor landslide...

Or not if you look the right way....

Are Quain's hopes of meeting Chloe in person dashed?

And how is he meant to get back in his ship now?

One relog later and Quain finds himself standing on the real floor, so....

Yeah, kinda over eager and a bit winey. Illusion of cuteness shattered. Still, I had no other use for 5 sensor fragments cluttering up my space suit, so donated them to her.
At least the ground is above my head now, so I did get back into my ship.

On to Witchead...

Found me one of those rare (only my second one) Herbig AE/BE Proto stars

I also came across a wrecked Diamondback Scout with an occupied escape pod and a bunch of other canisters which I left alone. This thing was approximately 1000Ly from Colonia, I was mapping a moon and a distress signal popped up, I had to dump a repair limpet to bring it along. It's going back to the bubble with me, I hope they don't mind.
