Build our own Settlements

Somebody says that because Elite is a space sim, we can't build bases on moons and planets? Well that's a silly argument, since IRL space agencies are planning to establish bases on the moon and Mars someday in the not too distant future.
They've been saying that since the 60s. Like harnessed, economic nuclear fusion it's always "in the near future". It'll never happen.

Why are we collecting anything that isn't used as an upgrade / engineering component? Or Raws and Manufactured / Data that have no purpose?
At least the EDO surplus can be sold for credits! (or traded in the FC bar, of course)
Yes, for something like this to make sense overall it would have to be tied into a crafting overhaul that allowed all the items sold in the markets and mats gathered to be turned into secondary/tertiary products which then could either be sold at a profit or used to construct a base, or even ships even, if so allowed to.

We already have a huge number of complaints about Odyssey settlements not being an integral part of the game, but a separate FPS addon, now they want a base building game, but not as part of the main game but a separate base building addon that has nothing to do with the main game....shall I get the popcorn out?
The rationale behind my idea was that I am afraid that bolting more gameplay on the existing engine won't make it more stable and won't increase the performance. I thought of separated games which could use optimized engines (FPS-engine, Space flight engine) and perhaps slowly phase out the original game while introducing a new engine on the same universe simulation. The other thought was that perhaps players might want to invest into DLCs for the "ship game" whereas other would invest into the "base building game".

Yeah, FDEV working on two engines and two games of ED at the same time, that's highly unlikely.

As long as customers would pay for it, I don't see a problem with two games. I'd rather see two separate games in the same universe and BGS which are optimized for their purpose, than a monolithic piece of software which lacks the foundation to implement a meaningful expansion.
There is that "other space game" which tries to be a jack of all trades and its design is perhaps better to achieve it but its problem is that it is limited in scale and playability. I am not judging which game is better - I only want to express that a studio the size of FDev and even a much larger one probably does not have the resources to create a space game which contains all what many of us wish for: ships galore, a decent flight and combat model, running around everywhere with all the shooty and explory stuff, a huge area to play with all kinds of geomes and biomes plus a meaningful and engaging stories but two games or three games could achieve it ;) (just my 2c)

The hell with Base building. Let's go all out: either challenge and beat out one of the current powers and take it over, or become a new power, one to be reckoned with, maybe with a Kumo Burger franchise, along with green Orion slave girl dancers.

That is quite a confident statement....... Is there any reason why you dont think we wont build on other planets? I would think it is almost inevitable at some point.
Real life governments are too busy squabbling and squandering to build outwards. We've been going backwards and losing capabilities since Apollo, then the abandonment of the space shuttle, and even Concorde.

Or just play Traveller. Just as with radio plays, the pictures are better in one's imagination anyway.

Id enjoy base building if done well, and look forward to the possibility of having it. I'd also like the ability to own planets or even an entire system perhaps, if permissible.

The Apollo program was one of the results of the USA and Soviet Russia ‘squabbling’.

Given the impulsion to try to stop the other side getting there first, I would imagine that the simmering global rivalries that are emerging post ‘new world order’ wIll refuel the space race.

Still an atmospheric flight model in space :)
which is a design choice, and harks back to the original game that Elite Dangerous is a sequel too. FD tried full neutonian in Frontier and 1st encounters and whilst it is more accurate, (and has its share of fans) most people - including David B himself - found it less fun to play than the simpler model in the 1st game.... add to that it would not have worked as well in a multiplayer environment.
Elite has lost a lot of potential due to it wanting to be multiplayer imo......... accelerated time would have allowed for some great glory shots, and one of the reasons we dont have more destrucable environments is because a subset of players would just destroy everything....

so even forgetting the subjective view of what is more fun.............. full newtonian is just another victim of multiplayer in elite.

that said, along with the sound which never dissapoints...... i love the combined flight model we have in elite when in space, it does give a nod to realism when you turn of FA - within the constraints of networking and multiplayer.. .... i would like a little more complexity around planet surfaces personally, esp if we ever get proper atmospheres.

i would like to be able to afford to refuel my car 1st before refueling a space race ;)

you are right however, war (regardless of hot or cold) sucks, it has a huge cost both in terms of money, to the environment and human life........... but it is also a catalyst for discovery and innovation.
