Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Finding myself mostly taking scavenger removal missions. I ought to try a couple of on foot assassinations - the marks can apparently be quite tooled up so it ought to improve my skills. But probably not coz the git gud eludes me.

I suppose I could go and do some "classic" ED stuff... but the on foot game keeps pulling me back :D
These days I regularly switch back and forth between space and foot stuff.

It would be nice if they eventually release some cross foot/space missions...

There are several summaries (in 5 parts IIRC) of the Azimuth Saga in GalNet as well as a few FDev streams and some GalNet News Digest video summaries.

There is also a thread in these forums that was penned by "Bruce G".

IIRC the release order of all these summaries is:
  • Bruce G Post in Forums ("The Azimuth Saga So far" or something similar to that)

  • FDev streams (Twitch/YouTube)

  • GalNet News Digest Videos (YouTube)

  • FDev GalNet News articles, in 5 parts.
Its a somewhat interesting story that began on Halloween weekend 2020 with the arrival of a Ghost Ship in the Chukchan system and the culmination of which is just around the corner now (as soon as the 2nd week of August)

Also, you may be interested in the recent "so called" roadmap here (if you haven't seen it yet): https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/console-profile-transfers-and-2022-updates
(There is also a graphic version of the roadmap somewhere)
Brilliant - thank you, I’ll have a good trawl through.

Seem to be getting a few CTD's today...

Anyone else?
I was having a lot of CTD's about a month or so ago (right after the update), turned out it was a virtual memory issue (swap file). I had to increase the size by moving it to a different drive. Maybe check your system and program log files for a clue as to what's causing it. Sorry I'm not much help, I know it sucks.

I've been out core mining for the first time in months, and the first time with a carrier orbiting the planet I'm mining the rings of.
The availability of the carrier removes a few things you would otherwise have to cram into your mining ship - like a fuel scoop, possibly FSD booster, heck I made do with a light weight 5D FSD. I also went into the field naked, by which I mean, no shields. But strong hull. The ship in question rarely has shields on it anyway.

The panoramic view of the asteroid field while using PWA is unrivalled, the boost speed a credible 530m/s loaded with limpets or minerals, and the agility around the rocks is unmatched for a fairly compact ship that can haul 96t of minerals back to the carrier. That's enough for me on one trip.
I like the Orca for core mining, but the length does make collecting chunks a bit cumbersome. I'd guess the Clipper's width is an issue, but not tried this ship core mining yet.
The ship'ss last trick is the abrasion blaster and seismic launcher can be mounted centre line to the ship just above the cockpit which makes a noticeable difference to the speed and accuracy of this part of the operation. It helps to compensate for the good but not amazing boost speed for finding the next core to crack.

All round I'm not sure what ship could top it for my tastes, except maybe the Clipper if it turns out to not be too wide. Maybe one of it's larger sister ships. To borrow another writer's phrase, "All hail the Chief".

I mainly ran around Allied space in my new Beluga all weekend. With business class seating for eighty and Saud Kruger lines, you are sure to sit where you can see a window, or at least where you can see and speak to someone who can see the window, and find out about the view that way.

Now, for a refreshing change of pace, out comes the freighter. The Alliance has a real biowaste problem and now don't get me started on boom time delivery jokes .. we ship this shizzle FOR THE PEOPLE!

While you're out there truckin', don't forget to drop some on a ganker every now and then. They love it!

Like you I've been enjoying mining with an FC to assist. I set up a Cutter for mining, but the hard points on the back sticky-out things cause problems for aiming with the Abrasion blaster and/or Miner Chargers and the lasers fitted there mean you need to get that bit closer to be in range. The Cutter's not bad for mining, just a bit arkward, IMO.

Been getting them over the past week. I thought it was down to my GPU, as I usually get some form of coloured reptile.
Same here.

It always happens right when I start the game. Within about two minutes it will CTD. After I get it started back up again it seems fine.

Due to some issues with graphic instability that I've experienced, whenever I turn my PC on to play, I always reboot it after it has settled, and before I play, then I don't get the graphical instability which I think is a miscommunication between my GPU and my monitor upon cold boot...

I almost never see CTDs. I wonder if there is a correlation there...

Seem to occur for me when the Cutter is just about to set down at a station. When I log back in I'm 20 clicks away. I assumed it was the Cutter at fault as the Auto-Pilot is FooBar anyway. Haven't been flying other ships recently, as I've been hauling for the Salvation shilling.

I use the Cutter for laser mining, but this ship seems ill suited to core mining due to its sheer size and lack of agility. If I were to try core mining with it I'd put siesmic charge launcher and abrasion blaster on the medium hard points mounted on the fuselage - unless I wanted the extra challenge 😁
I suppose if you were going to build a ship to do both these types of mining at the same time it's hard to beat the Python / Krait.
Unfortunately the platinum hotspot in the ring I'm currently parked beside yielded no platinum at all after 35 prospector limpets across two different locations. Later while in a Rhodplumsite hot spot looking for cores, I found core asteroids with platinum inside, and Painite. Plenty of Rhodplumsite cores too, though.

I still blame the Cutter.
I've actually never had the game crash while piloting my Cutter.

I really wish core mining was worth doing. The Python is awesome at it. It is also incredibly fun...other than the fact it takes you 30 minutes to find one single asteroid worth mining.

In the time it takes to core mine 100 million I could have made 3 trips in my Cutter and made 450 million.

As is commonly known, best credits per hour is laser mining platinum, but I'm after variety over getting credits as fast as possible these days.
I started to enjoy core mining more when I understood how much asteroid field real estate you need to cover before you can expect to find another core asteroid. Once I tuned into that I started hammering the boost and PWA more to cover ground faster and I find the Python a bit on the slow side for this even with fully engineered thrusters. If you don't have a fleet carrier parked next to you, I think the Python is still the best core mining choice since having a fuel scoop and perhaps a Guardian FSD booster is important to get to the mining location and the market to sell quickly. The number and size of internal slots on the Python really pay off here.

Right now Guttors system is working well for Rhodplumsite which is paying 850+ thousand per ton in the right places. There is only one ringed planet and one Rhodplumsite hot spot here plus a load of other mineral hotspots.
Don't bother trying to laser mine here. The one platinum hotspot does not seem to have any platinum....

I used to really enjoy core mining, not due to the huge profits you could make back in the day but just for the gameplay. Now it seems to have been left in a complete state.

When the rock rush was big the number of cores found was pretty near perfect IMO, prices needed to be adjusted to reduce the incredible wealth available but the discovery rate really allowed you to get in game and enjoy the activity you’d chosen to undertake. As it stands I spend two hours boosting and often find virtually nothing. I usually only took a Keelback so it was never about profits for me, just being able to do what you set out to do for the fun of it….imagine finding as few ships in a Res site as you do cores in a hotspot (maybe I’m stretching that somewhat, but nothing makes a point like hyperbole!)
