On topic, in off-topic, but the state of the game is changing!
Everyone gets V4 on PC in the near future (just about when consoles transfer starts, I'd guess) and the rage-quits will be epic!

All of it will be epic, not just the rage quits...
Which reminds me, out of all the things people have kept asking about (over and over and over, ad nauseum), the client merge seems to have dropped from most of the radar IIRC.
Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0
Which means it does not make much sense to discontinue 3.8 on PC, although it would require a redesign of the Launcher to allow launching Horizons 3.8 and Horizons 4.0 (which might be more or less trivial) AFAIK, some have already played horizons mode on the 4.0 client.

I'm so glad the answer to this question was just "NO"...
Brucey baby appears to now confirm that the upgrade to version 4.0 is optional and not needed to experience the end of all things the Azimuth Saga.
