Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

In principle, it's okay to upgrade to 4.0.
But that should presuppose that the planets are revised again.
It was said that these would now remain as they are.
They are often boring and ugly.

Sorry, I didn't read all 4000 posts here, so maybe this was asked and answered but I have some people saying that things like Dav's Hope and the Crystal Shards will be "going away" with update 13. Where is this stated? Rumor had it that the Shards were "going away" in EDO but they are still there, as is Dav's Hope and other locations we all rely on for mats collection. Anyone have solid info on this, one way or the other? Thanks

Aaaaaaarg, how can it be so hard to find out what is happening for Consoles, specifically X box series X. I'll try again, in the short term will we be able to see the outcome the Azimuth saga, in the longer term, what effects are we going to get (if any?), or will our game remain the same until the servers are switched off.
Bruce?, Sally?, anyone?
Our game will be the same til the transfer in September with no improvements and only critical fixes ( so nothing new) and after the transfer I think our game will be a totally separate game from EDO . EDO will become the base game and the masses will feast on the breadcrumbs and will be grateful and happy .

that isn't coming with update 13, that's coming later. for update 13 itself.. we know there is going to be a laundry list of bug fixes, optimisations, crash fixes. as for new content... well... given the only new content we've had since Oddy's launch is the Scorpion, odds are no lol. Doesn't mean they won't move the narrative storyline along, because that is definitely happening. But that also doesn't mean U13 will contain anything "new". I have a feeling update 14 in November will contain the long-awaited Thargoid ground combat stuff. Check back on tuesday to see if my crystal ball needs recharging or not :p

--edit: just occured to me that Thargoid ground combat will probably mean us going off and grinding new AX ground weapons and new Corrosion-proof Flight Suits. So when they are coming is anyone's guess. Hey, innocent tourist settlement... nice Fibre-optic cable you got there. pew-pew

Pity many of us don't have good enough PCs in the first place, but in particular don't WANT to play this game (and likely most others) on PC!

We want to play the game on our systems of choice, where it already exists - as I've said in other threads, I don't know why Frontier seemingly made no effort and seemingly had no intention of releasing the game on the "next gen" systems, particularly when they were having trouble getting Odyssey running on "last gen"...

Surely the PS5 and Series X would have no trouble running Odyssey, but I guess it was too much effort! :_ .

Hopefully version 4.0, will be pretty quickly followed by version 4.5 "We messed up - we're restarting console development and releasing on next gen systems!" :O .
I'm afraid that won't happen . If they don't get the EDO sales they will step back from elite slowly( I think they are pinning on the Console Cmdrs to transfer across and then buy EDO) . You can see the effort slowly diminishing already.

So does this mean that Horizons and Odyssey players can instance together in certain situations and areas? In space all current content is "Horizons" so surely it would make sense to try and match those people together.

Anything else new in Update 13 except the messing around with versions of Horizons and Odyssey? 👀
nope it's just fixing and small cosmetic changes. FDEV isn't able to develop EDO further. I bet all senior devs already left the sinking ship. Over a year nothing just like text based narratives and boring CG.

Meanwhile... over at Hello Games and NMS... ;)

Wait a minute: is that by design??

The very few times I've played EDO I noticed bio/geo sites weren't showing on my panel and I simply thought "Oh well, just another Oddity bug".

Now you're telling me that's Working As Intended™? Who-- Wh-What the #$%&@ was FDev thinking?? 🤯
What they were thinking is "if we put every bio/geo instance on the new planets as a scan-from-orbit POI the navigation will have a few hundred thousand entries on it".
Same reason that the Horizons client doesn't give you a POI marker from orbit for every single Metallic Meteorite and Outcrop.

You get the heatmap instead, fly down to a bit where it's blue for the type of feature you're interested in (which could be anything from "a few isolated valleys" to "90% of the planet") and the life forms or geo features will be there - some of the rarer ones might require a bit of hunting, and for a few species it helps to get an understanding of the micro-terrain types they like best which doesn't show on the planet-wide heatmap, but it's still "one patch every five or six kilometres" not "one patch every megametre", and you actually get to explore the planet a bit rather than "fly to target identified from orbit, leave again".

The POI system is only suitable for things where there's single-digit numbers (or maybe low double) of them on the entire planet, which in Odyssey planets just isn't true of that sort of feature (it is still used for human structures, which on these planets are still extremely rare: if in 2043 we get to access populated ELWs they probably won't have a POI for each house either)

Funny that FDEV have stated that the changes to planetary tech in EDO were necessary to continue developing further releases of more atmospheric planets, but I guess that narrative just doesn't work for some peoples preconceived ideas.

Frontier have said plenty of things, some have been accurate, some not so.

I think it'd be nice to not have to play on the 4.0 branch like this anymore where 60fps on the 3.8 branch is doable:

let's hear it for performance fixes!

(the weirdest part about this: it doesn't seem to matter what my settings are at from this low to ultra, it's always 10-15fps regardless)

Even when the news are good the usuals still can't help complaining and criticizing...
Were do you come off saying I don't play the game? My opinions are my own.
Are they? - "To allow as many players as possible to experience the new narrative and gameplay elements, we intend to give all PC players access to version 4.0, at no additional cost, while keeping the upgrade to Odyssey optional. You will still be able to launch Elite in version 3.8 if you choose."

The shard's haven't "gone away", really. They're just more evenly dispersed across the planet instead of being concentrated in specific, targetable locations. And arguably that's much more natural. So you just have to spend a little bit longer driving around. You can still come across large clusters.

I've been out there a couple of times in Odyssey, and didn't really find it a problem. If anything, some of the terrain was more frustrating in Horizons.

good news? they are adding cockpit cats finally?!

I'm going to name mine Lord Tribble and he's going to be a fluffy maine coon sitting in the passenger seat and follow me around on concourses and knock everything off my table in my captains quarters.

it's good to finally get good news after a year of Odyssey. Yay cockpit cats!!!!!
