Where are the comets?

The impending Rosetta mission to land on a comet today got me thinking. I haven't seen a comet in any system I've visited and I haven't seen it mentioned or shown in any of the "fantastic sights" threads.

I realise a comet would not be very visible until the tail forms as it approaches the star, is that why we don't see them? Or are they just incredibly rare?

If they are going to appear in the game I think they should be given a unique scanner symbol so they can be picked out and it might lead to scientific missions on the bulletin board: "Find the comet in system X, get scans and return the data."

The reason we've not seen comets in the game yet is probably the same reason we haven't seen Thargoids yet and thats because what we are currently playing is an incomplete game. When it goes to gamma at the end of the month I think both the Thargoids and comets will be seen more often although probably not a every day type event.

They must have a tail in order to be what we expect. Otherwise comet is just a rock, circling around some sun every... let's say... hundred of years. Or more.

And they have their tail for just couple of months during all that time, while are close enough to the sun mentioned.

But visiting systems with active (visible by eye) comet would be awesome. Elite space tourism! Even tail raiding as extreme space sport! Yay!

Comets would be cool, maybe a sort of advanced mining where you have to chase them down to get certain special metals.

I'd suggest getting unique genetic materials from comets would be even cooler. Who knows what would companies do with it? It could open some new scenarios, events, secret research centers, pilot implants, bionic ship parts... oh, bionic ships?

It should be very rare occasion to find a comet with usable genetic materials, specially in case it impacts the whole game. And it should be protected by hard finding and hard landing, making it available to best pilots with huge in-game experience. They'd surely know what to do with it.

FYI - I asked about real comets being in the game back in May and got a response from Micheal.

At the moment no, comets are procedural generated. We might add a few with long lived stable orbits for Sol, but we shall see.

This is the second time I have posted this today :)

As soon as something space related hits the news, there is always a flurry of "are we going to get space_phenomenon_0145 in the Elite" threads.

I'm sure I remember Michael saying that they were in, we just couldn't see them yet. Or words to that effect.

I remember seeing an early mock up of I think it was the system map. It had a comet in it and David Braben commented that the comet was going in the wrong direction lol  I guess even Frontier get things wrong sometimes :D

Comets would be great.. Is there plans for any other spacial anomalies? Something more for unidentified cargo/pirate. I did find a funeral convoy today one large ship with a few sidewinders leading it. I hope derelicts get in game...maybe when we can walk around ships they will show up.

Chances are you may end up finding wrecks or illegal stations on comets or some other stuffs. Probably something the expansion will bring.

If I'd find Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged at some remote comet, I'd tell him he's a jerk. A complete arsehole.
