Elite Dangerous Crime: Fines, Bounties and Notoriety

Hi,

late yesterday evening, on foot in a settlement, on the way to an NPC to hand over an item (mission).
Totally unexpected security check. Fully compliant ... Busted. I did not fire one single shot, did not try to escape.

Result:
prison,
auto-launch with the (according my past experience) rather common bug of being instantly attacked and destroyed still on the platform,
insurance re-buy,
high Notoriety level (cool-off req.),
66K CR fine (payable after 1 mission)

I think this is completely exaggerated in Odyssey rn.

Cheers

Basically this 👇

You went in there with high Notoriety and you're surprised you failed a security check?

However, getting destroyed on the pad after leaving the prison - this is where i have my doubts
Shouldn't the bounties be cleared in the wake of being busted and sent to prison? (no idea if high notoriety has anything to do with this tho - i never let meself get caught when having notoriety)

Yeah, that's the part that smells of bug to me. If you're busted for a crime don't you have to pay your bounty on the rebuy screen?
At the very least, your bounty in that jurisdiction should be gone, and prison ships have their own jurisdiction. Superpower bounty, maybe? Those have been behaving oddly since odyssey launched, to the point of being the main reason I log into horizons these days.

CRIME and PUNISHMENT

In ordinary language, a crime is an unlawful act punishable by a state or other authority.

Last night I was caught trying to avoid a scan after pinching two item of goods from a crate in a ground settlement. Nobody asked me to steal these items and they were clearly labelled as illegal in the crate.

on leaving the building some local security officer tried to scan me and I ran creating a failing to stop offence I was then shot in the back by a goliath. I wake up in the local nick. (system working as planned)

However I still have a fine of 50,000 creds on me which is more than the value of the said items. (Working as planned)

On arriving at another base to deliver a mission item I was scanned and immediately shot due to the fine.

MORALS and CONCEQUENCE. I chose to steal the items I could have made a fair bit of cash off them. I was punished and failed to pay the fine, My fault. (working as planned).

How does crime pay in this game, The Incentive to commit a crime in this game could be tweaked to make it a worth while occupation and possibly making criminal acts pay better.

However there has to be a balance and the consequences of being caught should negate any perceived income from the crime and contain a Punishment element as well .

So with that said How do you as a character make crime pay? Easy don't get caught and if you do get caught except the consequences and pay the fines.

The only scenario I can think of is superpower bounty indeed.

Also, unfixed ever since Odyssey released is how you don't really lose the bounties in the transactions tab until after you relog.

This is, once again, why I hate the all-seeing-eye that charges you with crimes when there are no witnesses - at least, none that are more than a pair of smoking boots on the ground. I mean, come on, skyrim got this right.

Panopticon delenda est.

So would it help to relog after waking up in the prison ship to clear the crime bounties?

Is interstellar factors showing the crime bounty now correctly in Odyssey?

  • Other bounties outstanding?
  • Item was illegal (not necessarily stolen)?
  • Stolen access credentials?
That's the point!
Nothing, not any (superpower) bounties, no earlier fines. I pay all fines asap, when having Notoriety I usually do some hidden cache/crash site missions before anything else.
The item cannot be stolen as it was the common mission item you simply have to hand over to an NPC. No access items or e-breach on me since I did not need to access anything.

Illegal mission\item, you got scanned and caught with it redhanded?
Thats my guess anyway.
You might be correct. Unfortunately, I cannot remember whether or not the mission item itself was in fact "illegal". If it was - I think what I wrote as "result" is exaggregated. I will certainly never do such mission as RoI is not balanced.

It does say in the mission listings or an icon or something or maybe description, anyway, there is def a marker of some kind to whether what the mission entails is legal or not.

This one, as I didn't say stolen, I said illegal.

66k fine sounds like 50k for the lost item, 16k for being scanned with it.

But if you can't remember what it was, we'll probably never know.

For your good information: I am testing a bit. When In just left the prison and am in my ship it says in red "wanted" in the cockpit. When I relog, it doesn't say "wanted" anymore.

I just finished (after several of the same missions w/o problems) another recovery mission on foot. I did all good, killed all scavengers, placed the power regulator in and activated power, all fires distinguished. All of a sudden, there was no progress info anymore, like "leave the settlement". I thought ok another bug, removed the regulator and placed him in again.
Nothing. I discarded the buggy mission. When I returned to the station, I had anonymous access, 100k fine. what?
I do have 1000+ hours ED, just returned to Odyssey 3 weeks ago. I am so angry about this game!
The amount of issues with this game is unbearable.

You were given a power regulator to complete the mission. When the mission was abandoned rather than completed, the power regulator was then considered stolen from the mission giving faction. Essentially, you "bought" the power regulator with that 100K fine.

While I can't speak to the mission apparently not progressing correctly, there are consequences to abandoning missions so that players don't abuse the mission system to obtain free items. I believe there are similar consequences for abandoning space transport missions while you have mission cargo in your hold too.

One thing I found confusing and I'm sure a new player would has well:

When a bounty can't be paid at the station in Odyssey the bounty simply does not appear. It shows "No Bounties". The first few times that happened I had no clue what was going on. The transaction tab showed I have one but the station insists I don't. That really should appear and be greyed out with a message as to WHY you can't pay that bounty there, hand yourself in or pay the IF to clear things up. When caused by notoriety its made clear but not when caused by the faction being present in or very near the system.
