place your stupid high hopes " major feature overhaul for 2023 "

So some of the community had a meltdown over the lack of "walking around ships" when odyssey came out - I don't know exactly how they hoped that was in there, but there you have it.
Shortly after Odyssey was released there came this question of engineering and material gathering.

“Our three focuses before the year ends are launching the next phase of the narrative, stability and optimisation. We’ll release three more updates to support these. Within the narrative, human space balances on the precipice as tension mounts within the bubble. The Azimuth Saga will conclude in a grand finale event, the consequences of which will mark the beginning of the next stage of the Elite story in Update 14. Meanwhile, updates 12 and 13 will largely focus on quality-of-life changes, stability and optimisation. Work has also begun on a major feature overhaul for 2023 that we’ll discuss later in the year. Please note that the details and timings of each release are subject to change and that any adjustments will be shared ahead of time. Beyond this we are also discussing additional game content, and we’ll reveal it once confirmed.”

So update 14 puts horizons and odyssey on the same codebase/engine build, meaning even "horizons players" could "walk around" if they wanted to - maybe in their own ships?
if that major feature was to be added to the game.

As I've always stated in the past I think that "ship-legs" - a free expansion to both games "horizons and odyssey", would bridge the two games together - although I never had the vernacular at the time.
That would be an enormous undertaking and would mean the odyssey code would have to perform from planetary surface, walking into the ship, sitting down, and flying to station and walking back out again. Highly unlikely they could just knock that out of the gate directly after Odyssey's release?

So mundanely, the major feature that is probably coming is the engineering and materials, which gameplay, game-mechanics, the beat-to-beat nature of the game, the UI would have to be updated across the board for both Horizons and Odyssey (handy if they shared the same build of the engine - wink wink, nudge nudge)

But you know what feature I would like to see.

Walking around the "rings" of a ringed station.

Walking around the gardens in the docking areas of the Tourist stations.

There are outposts with viewing Galleries with ships in them - I had always hoped to have pottered around them.

The biodome parks.

What if you had to choose between PP and FAS Crossfire and one meant you'd never have the other? :p
This would happen.

Maybe because since the Kickstarter just about everyone wanted to walk around in ships, and almost no one cared about walking in stations.

What would I like to see in order of likelihood?

Proper on foot thargoids complete with thargoid sites and CZs.

SLF becoming landable and less tethered to the main ship so they can be useful when exploring.

Mining the upper atmosphere of gas giants like was teased all those years ago.

More challenging planets to become laudable requiring specialized ship launched craft and possibly suits. Things like volcanic worlds, water worlds, barren worlds with thick and possibly corrosive atmosphere ect.

And my absolute pipe dream squadron built and run surface sights, settlements, outposts, and stations.

A feature overhaul. Let's see. Mining already got one. Engineering got two. Trade got improved. Combat? Not much you can really overhaul on at this stage in the game's development. Similar with the flight model. Planets already got an overhaul, more development in that regard are rather expansion dimensioned. Leaves powerplay. Nothing ever happened with powerplay. So that's my pick.

If we're talking a major gameplay feature I'd have to say some kind of Thargoid invasion strategy type gameplay where they took over bubble systems and players had to work together in a unified way to push them out. This could include AX combat (obvs) but also maintaining supply lines with trade, protecting said supply lines from pirates and also providing exploration data to identify resource rich worlds.

Perhaps even the same for the thargoids as well if you pass some kind of allegiance test for them (delivery of 100 escape pods to the kitchen/probing room or something).

I trust I fulfilled the thread title's criteria here.

Sorry pre coffee.... are you asking what i am hoping for or what i think it will be?

I think it will be on foot thargoid stuff with some new structures added to the surface.

I hope it will be.............. actually am not even going to go there, i will just take what ever is offered, after all its a free expansion for a product we were told would be feature complete on launch and not to expect any major new things added, so with that in mind everything new is a bonus.

I am more hoping for news of work on going on a next paid expansion. even if over a year out it would be nice to know it is in production at least... i would have hopes for what is in a paid expansion.

And just in case not enough people do FDev should make sure it's impossible to fail. We can't have people failing.

The last decade or so has made companies terrified to do this. If someone so much as infers a hint about an upcoming feature and it doesn't manage to make the cut people lose their minds.

So, companies across the industry now try to be as opaque as possible and only announce what is already out almost done.

not expecting any details at all......... just that significant work on an expansion is fully underway (not expecting such an announcement. if i had to put money one way or the other i think i am leaning to ED:O being the last ED expansion :( but i am hoping.

There are loads of suggestions put previously that would really enhance the game but I reckon it'll be an enhancement to CQC to include on foot.

I've never even clicked on CQC and haven't done any on foot combat so it'll be of no interest to me but lots of CMDR's seem to enjoy that sort of thing.

Had one interesting thought on the feature update. With rising significance of Thargoid activity and also the possibility of new Guardian reaction to all this, I wondered whether the feature update might indeed focus on Powerplay and/or the BGS with new possibilities for the Thargoid/Guardian systems, states and influence?

o_O I never even thought of this. So long as they keep the power ups out of it, it may actually see endangerment.

On foot pvp is amazing in a CZ setting. Only problems are finding people and actually getting into the same instance. CQC solves that.
