4.0 Access on PC: FAQ

Do Horizons 4.0's minimum system requirements differ from those of 3.8?
If (contrary to my expectations) someone else should have asked this question in this thread before, I'd like to apologize, my concentration level is too low to sift through all these posts...
They are equal to Odyssey space content, since it's the same client. So yes, higher, but unless you're already playing 3.8 at barely acceptable FPS, you'll get a problem. If you get well over 60 FPS in 3.8, then 4.0 will be fine.

"Next month"?

Is it difficult to say "Sorry to delay" or " Thanks to your patience". Everyone know Horizon 4.0 is not gift but just for efficient to develop. And this was your promise not our ask.

I know saying "Sorry" is negtive to you is on legal issue or contract issue. But this situation is not.

Where is this coming from?

I find it hard to believe someone would post based on very out of date info. Hopefully he plans to apologise to fdev :sneaky:

"[...] our plans to make 4.0 available to all PC users." (emphasis mine)

I am curious how this will be presented to Steam users who currently do not own Odyssey. Will it be a mandatory upgrade, installing the extra 30+ GB of 4.0 code on our computers, like it or not? I know we'll retain the option to play the legacy version of Horizons, but it sounds like everyone will be getting Horizons 4.0 installed whether they want it or not.

Why would they?
We have 2 clients now because we have 2 code-bases 3.8 si 4.0, not because we have base game (horizons) and odyssey

Before, the base game and horizons shared the same install.
I would expect BaseGame (Horizons) 4.0 to share the same install with Odyssey 4.0

Turn off auto-updates in Steam (that's what 'forces' it on you), don't install Horizons 4.0 from the launcher when it's offered. 🤷‍♂️

AFAIK, I need to update the launcher from Steam, otherwise the launcher itself won't connect to Frontier's servers. I'm pretty sure it's all or nothing - if I want the new launcher, I need to get whatever else is in the update. Normally this is a good thing, because Steam is very fast. Compare / contrast to MSFS, where only the launcher is updated via Steam, and then the launcher itself downloads the rest of the FS updates from Microsoft. ESO also is a "the launcher does the updating" title, but Elite isn't, not on Steam anyway (again, normally a good thing).

The other problem is that even if disabling updates from Steam does work because Frontier continues to allow connections from the old launcher, someday there may be an update to 3.8 that I'll need, which means I'm just postponing the inevitable if 4.0 is a mandatory update.

It just feels like installing 4.0 is going to a mandatory install for Steam users. Now maybe I can manually (re)move it afterwards (I'd probably push it onto an external drive) if I need to free up space. IIRC 4.0 is an entirely separate install from 3.8, with its own folder and config files, so this should be an option, yes?

I too am curious about the EDH 4.0 client on steam. I do want to try it out and see how it works on my new pc and the older pc, cause sometimes I have to use that. (new pc: rx6800 non xt, 5900x, 32gb ram, nvme drives) (old pc: gtx 1070, 2500k, 16gb ram, sata ssd drives)

Ody is now on sale in Steam for 21.99 usd, same price as the recently ended humble bundle... for those who didn't know.

The way they might solve this problem is by reorganizing the Steam package so that clients 3.8 and 4.0 are DLCs to the launcher.

If they don't do that, it's indeed all or nothing. I'd like to uninstall client 3.8, but even if I do so in the launcher, Steam will detect the missing files and repair the installation, because client 3.8 is part of the base package. Both clients together occupy 70 GB in total. None of my other game installs is that large.

I'm in the opposite camp, where I have some games (the aforementioned ESO and MSFS being two) that are HUGE, which means I've got to be a bit more fussy with what I install. I don't play Elite that much anymore, but I've never had reason to uninstall it because 3.8 doesn't take up that much room. If this changes, then I might be forced to make some hard choices. Hopefully I can move Elite to an external drive if it comes to that.

If 4.0 is treated as an optional DLC, that would be great. I do wonder how this will all play out in the store. If 4.0 is meant to be the "standard" Horizons going forward, replacing 3.8, then Frontier is going to have to make some major changes to the store page - description, screenshots, and most important, minimum specs. Perhaps 3.8 becomes the DLC going forward, which is great for you, not so great for me.

Oh well, I'm guessing we won't know until release day. In the meantime, I might take the advice to disable auto-update for Elite in Steam, at least until after the dust settles.

Honnest question: 4.0 codebase .. is that the reason that you are incapable of implementing proper VR (like 360° view) on foot ?

They barely had the 2d game going.
Barely.
After 6 months of crunching.
And after sacrificing Consoles in the process.

Most probably VR has a small enough player base to make the dev effort unsustainable

My FPS seem to be okay, but that doesn't mean the new version couldn't exceed my amount of graphics memory...
I'm playing on a not very expensive laptop that definitely wasn't built for gaming.

At the moment I'm a little too daft to be able to find stuff...
Can someone give me a hint where I could find a list of these requirements?

FWIW the forum RSS is a bit botched and can cause this kind of confusion.

I asked on the EDCD discord, apparently it's because "The date on an "item" in the feeds is the latest post, not the original date Which means that in the feed data, old posts show up as new ones just because somebody posted something new in the thread".

It's tripped me up a couple times, thinking sally had posted a brand new thread that included mention about solving performance and aliasing issues...only to discover it's just the thread from a year or two ago. :\
