Post Your Support for Elite Odyssey to have VR Support.

I’d also pay for good VR support. It’s still a niche tech and doesn’t benefit from the economy of scale. Money has to come from somewhere.

Heh, a few day ago, for a few seconds I thought: "Hey, they fixed X, and Y, and brought back the diegetic HoloMe, instead of that horrible blue screen!", until I realised I had set Horizons to update earlier in the day, and now accidently had started that instead of Odyssey (...and then accidently ended up in HoloMe, due to the UI open-on-look option resetting...). :p
I thought that they had enabled VR Carrier view from any direction until I realised I wasn't even in VR. ;)

I do wonder if Frontier truly have a genuine discussion scheduled for on-foot VR support down the line. As far as I know, they haven't explicitly ruled it out publicly.
I think most VR players would appreciate a real interim solution where the VR camera is simply locked to player head position, as opposed to the 2D projector screen that breaks all immersion (imo). Some people of course may not engage with that, as with only smooth motion it can cause VR sickness. I do wonder though if a VR HUD can't be designed to mimic the way the ship's cockpit helps prevent VR sickness.

In any case, I do hope we hear some news about it soon, even if it's to say they've decided against supporting VR on-foot.

I would say the chances are slim. IF i had to make a bet about what announcement would come first - full VR including on foot or that ED:O was the last paid expansion for elite and it was essentially in maintanence mode................................. if i had to pick i would go for the latter.

hopefully that wont happen either but i am just explaining how unlikely i think full vr will be for ED. I do agree completely with your interim suggestion and i think would be a relitively simple addition - given it has already been demonstrated - it just needs a bit of polish and work around it.

On foot VR sickness doesn't seem to be a thing as I have played a few on foot FPS like games w/o ever getting any VR sickness. I am very sensitive to VR sickness in the wrong situations too. I think the problem was with the rushed Odyseey release, the grey border I'm pretty sure was just to cut down on the rendering. With more time and optimization I see absolutely no reason why they cant now get rid of the grey border. To prove this assertion, the game works fine rendering/FPS wise in Free Camera on foot. I think they should at least make it optional now. I am prepared to wait personally, until they get it together maybe along with their merging of the 4.0 Odyssey/Horizon unification. I think maybe their headache is as you hinted at; whether to lock the viewpoint at the on foot characters head(all puns intended) or maybe lock the view point at 3rd person. Fingers crossed(with or without a VR glove) they'll find all the solution's needed. ;)

Hi,
As a measure of how many CMDRs woudl like to see VR Support in Elite Odyssey please post a +1, Yes or other positive affirmation here.
An easy way to gauge the community sentiment.
Yes, we don't know yea or nea, but at least we can start to gather some metrics and numbers.
I for one would love to see VR Support.
Thanks
Pete
FDEV is not listening. I have not touched EDO for about 8 mos. now. There are other sims to play - esp. now that FDEV has abandoned VR.

Without motion controller support it's pointless IMO.

Most of us VR users disagree I think. Going to a 2d screen completely breaks immersion, not to mention the screen is so far away from the HMD you cant see worth crap in the helmet. I had to quit the tutorial for Odyssey because I couldn't even understand what was going on in VR looking at a distant flat screen in a fog of grey.

Aside from this motion control support has already been implemented in ED for ships, not to mention there is a glitch (not sure if it still works) that lets you run around in VR and even shoot the gun, but you have no HUD. So it would only be a short matter of time before someone modded the game to be able to use motion controllers if they just implemented normal VR view for the FPS aspect of the game.

TL;DR, Joint effort to ask for a minor improvement for VR.

Sorry guys and girls, I'm coming out of the blues to talk since I'm coming to the black soon. I'm actually reconfiguring all my binding and I'm planning to start playing ED in VR after a couple of weeks of playing mostly MSFS VR and Skyrim VR.

Elite Dangerous is still my favourite game. Even after my big disappointment of the ''non VR at launch'' and the ''not planned'', I still very much adore this galaxy.

I was wondering if we could start a new thread or start a new ticket in a joint push to as Frontier to change the dull grey VR background when we are on foot, to a more immersive black backdrop.

I already asked that in a post and had the chance to receive an answer from Sally which back then, gave me a glimps of hope. Here was her answer :
'' Hello! Haw... We were only talking about the "can it be black around the edge" for VR at Dinner with the Devs on Saturday, funny enough I didn't have the notebook there with me but I've kept it for resurfacing in chats! Thank you for your thoughts. You fly safe too o7 ''

Do I really need any argument to convince anyone here, that the grey background is really immersive breaking ?!

It would be so much more immersive, since we are often on the surface of a planet with the blackness of it above us. When it’s grey, it really make it feel like we are in a box. The only reason I feel the they have chosen grey is because (maybe) the god’s ray that are introduced in VR when there is high level of contrast. But, honestly, I would rather have a tiny bit of god ray than having a obvious gray boring, immersion breaking grey background.

What do you think?

Be safe

Well, if an answer is mandatory: I couldn't care less -- it is the very, very, very least of my problems with the situation, but that also means I would have no reason to protest the change. :7

EDIT: Giving it another second of thought: I'd speculate that if (very relative) immersion is the pain point, the best solution might not be changing from solid grey to solid black, but making it dynamic, so that it matches the current light -level and -tone in the scene, kind of like you see on some large wall mounted television sets, which have wall-illuminating LEDs along the back edges of them.

Sure, that would be cool, but I'm more looking for a ''realistic'' improvement.

Sorry to ask, because I'm late to the party, but can you share to me what is your concerns?

Well, no more than the obvious gripe that there is a 2D monoscopic cinema screen instead of actual VR, at all, to begin with. :7
(That's not to say there isn't a whole host of lesser concerns, as well...)

I actually mentioned the "ambilight" option specifically as something more "realistic" than the fixed black (...or grey, or whatever... :7).

EDIT2: ...or, hmm, I guess you probably meant "realistic" as in "realistic expectations", with regards to what one can hope from FDev, rather than the effect... :7

Hey listen, "There is no need for a Grey Border with current Gen mid and top range cards by AMD and Nvidia ON FOOT". THAT'S IT! Go into external camera, it renders perfectly in VR. Not just that but I have a Pimax 5k and it renders in perfect in normal mode which basically needs the same degree and level of rendering as other VR headesets, if not more. I also have a AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor and 6800XT. My system is already out of date and yet renders perfectly in external full screen VR on foot. THERE IS NO GOOD EXCUSE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO RENDER THE SCENE with many pc systems.. People have been crying out for it for a while now. AND yes they wont even make the border optional OR BLACK. I dont get it. Yes NMS, the new MSFSX are now becoming my goto to games as I have been feeling for a while now that some 1 over at Frontier holds us lot in contempt and is just digging their feet in for the sake of being OBTUSE over VR, We shall see. Maybe with the the new leadership at Frontier we shall see some changes. Not holding my breath though. I'll support anything of an improvement in this direction. C'mon Frontier PLEASE SORT IT OUT, getting a bit ridiculous now this Grey Border.

I know all about that, but since nothing is moving forward, but backward with VR, I was wondering if ''at least'' they could give use the option to have black background.

Just stopping to post my support.
I stopped VR use altogether due to this, and it was the main reason I play ED. So, I play very little ED now.

I would advise not to settle for ‘change from grey to black’.

We need to keep pushing for a proper vr view so we can enjoy all elements of the game in vr.

Some of the vista’s I see when in legs makes me so angry and disappointed with Fdev that we’re this close to having an amazing vr experience end to end across all game play loops and from what we see with the vanity cam it can be done.

Now performance concerns are abated - now is the time to keep pushing for what we should have.

Like many others, I'm just here to express my support for VR support and optimization (performance is still considerably worse than Horizons). This game is one of the best VR experiences on the market. It could truly be something even more fantastic. I so badly want to see the surface of these planets in full 3D, on foot. Hell, make us pay for it. Charge more for Odyssey VR, and make it a product! TAKE MY MONEY.
