Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Seeing as we're in the pause before the nothingburger that is Citcon...

I went truffling for more dev opinions. This is by far my favourite :)

I’m sorry, they have fricking fish collecting in Star Citizen? Roberts is a mad god, and this game is his tormented universe.

Some bonus ones:

Sept 2015 - Indie dev on insider gossip

I have a few people involved in the project that have sent me some things with SC…suffice to say that project management and burning money on nonsense was a major issue in why things are behind.

Sept 2016 - Veteran on the Kotaku coverage

I’ve been in the industry for 20 years now, and I worked for companies big and small. I’ve seen similar things happen a lot of times. And nearly all of them are workable if you have the right mindset and care from the start. I know because I experienced at least one project in which that was the case.

So, when I see something as big as Star Citizen wasting backer’s money because people didn’t communicate as they should, didn’t follow back as much as needed, and didn’t have proper project management, it causes me pain, because that’s backer money being thrown away on something that could be avoided or at the very least minimized.

Oct 2019 - Ex Auran dev

Nothing they have done or showed off so far is actually new on either an individual level or even on a lot of aggregate levels. Their ambition is stupid not because they are trying so many new things but because they wont’ focus on “a thing” to create and have scope creeped the hell out of the game that they don’t even know the fine details of the gameplay loop to put everything they’ve created together.

June 2022 - Travis Baldree [Rebel Galaxy etc] laughing at an SQ42 Update

As a developer/engineer and someone who has run multiple studios this entire update is hysterical.
“The animation team moved 6 deck chairs from the fore to the aft of the Titanic’s main deck, which is very important to the integrity of our narrative”

Interesting point here on game design vs narrative:

At least for Naughty Dog, they base the levels on pre-production very very high level concepts, the level gets designed and iterated on, and then later on the writers come in and work with the level designers to not only fit hte level into the script, but fit the script to the level

Personally I've only ever liked the extreme 'game first' end of narrative campaigns. (IE HL2 style ones where each level deploys a new game mechanic or layering of existing ones, then draws on any change in tempo & gameplay tone that those core changes bring). So that approach definitely leans towards my preferences (both for involving story telling, and meatier gaming)

I wonder how well it plays with * Chris slams down script gif * ;)

Youch

Until this post, I hadn't even realized CitCon was upon us...
Star Citizen has become completely irrelevant to my life.
Well... That's not entirely true.
Star Citizen isn't a game to me anymore.
It's an occasional social media thread.
It's Spectrum, a forum moderated by the most evil, dogmatic, hateful, holes on the planet.
It's a stinging disappointment.
And this is coming from someone just shy of Praetorian.

(They've spent $14,000 :/)

Luckily they never tied the patch to some sort of main sales event... That would be silly to pair something so complex which they are notoriously bad at predicting and is immensely difficult to something fixed.

no way they'll try something like that this year...

It'd be like saying they've played through the entirety of a single player game years ago. No one is crazy enough to say that.

If that leak is in any way accurate, the game looks worse than Infinite Warfare. Especially facial animations.

Rookies.

That SQ42 leak was so underwhelming. Assets assets assets and some on rails shooting. Would anyone just let Chris turn it into a cheesy movie and be done with it?

That's what I was wondering about as well... "This will not impact your game access at this time" does imply that they thought about cutting off access but decided against it and just leave it as a threat instead

Is it common for folks to lose their access to Star Citizen because they said the wrong thing on the forum?

CIG like to spread FUD as much as they like FOMO marketing and fake "inventory shortages" on digital items that can be copied ad infinitum.

A marketing PhD's wet dream of a spotlight company. All the tricks in the book. Little product to show for it.

They took it down before I saw it, although from the comments it appears I didn't miss much!

So much whining...it's like standing at the wailing wall in Jerusalem

That threat tho... I just wonder if there's some sort of legal problem with cutting off someone's access to a service because you don't like what they are saying about you. It might be why they worded the threat so carefully, like the way the Mafia word their threats...

"That's a fine little game you're playing there. It would be a shame if something was to happen to your access. Internet connections can be so fragile, especially for loose-lipped punks who can't keep their traps shut"
