Notice A notice on ARX (17/09)

That happens any time I do that anywhere. It's not FDev's issue. On a couple of occasions I've had it happen elsewhere and realized I was checking out in euros / pounds rather than dollars.

It is sort of odd that some of the largest, richest financial institutions on earth (Citibank & Chase, who my credit cards are with) don't do it automatically. I can only assume it's down to U.S. regulations and not them.
It does sound very weird! I assume that you can pay in a foreign currency if you travel abroad..

Maybe worth contacting your bank in order to understand what the exact problem is.

It's not like other banks or payment systems haven't been investigated by the SEC for scummy business practices! :D

It doesn't work that way.

No credit card company will allow me to check out from the U.S. to another nation using any other currency than U.S. Dollars. If they do not offer a U.S. Dollars store, I can not purchase from that company.

That is why most companies all offer the option to check out in different currencies to begin with.

Again, no other internet entity I've ever dealt with has this issue. This is the first time I've ever encountered it. It's not me and everybody else with the issue. It's just FDev.
I’m in the US, and I’ve never had that problem. I’ve always paid USD or GBP depending upon which exchange rate was more favorable. I’d say roughly 2/3 have been in pounds.

I do get charged a 1% fee when paying in GBP, though.

I'm in the US and I always pay businesses (foreign or otherwise) via PayPal, when possible, simply because it insulates my credit/debit cards, and their information, from being stored in a payment database...whatever fees they "might" charge me are worth it so far...

P.S. If PayPal ever gets hacked, I will cry a river of blood... ;)

I've always reserved PayPal for transactions with someone I don't yet trust with my credit card information. The bank for the card I use online does have strong fraud protections, but there are times when I shop outside my circle of trust. There's no perfectly secure online solution (points above), and for some reason online retailers won't accept cash. :p

This argument over exchange rates and we Americans getting cheated out of our fair value etc., I get the PoV. To be honest, it is irrelevant to me. Gaming is a complete fraud no matter how you look at it. :) What I mean by that is that I am paying real money to buy imaginary adventures. It is all a waste of money! I see my gaming purchases in the same light as I see any other entertainment purchase, be it subscribing to Netflix or plopping a stack of chips down on a roulette table. It's money being thrown out on transient thrills. If I was a sensible person, I should immediately curl up in a fetal position and sob uncontrollably as I count the thousands of dollars I have spent on PC gaming over the decades, money that could have been far better used in other ways. But I am a person, and people, heck, most living things, need some sort of play to be happy. So...I just don't think about the money spent. :D It makes me happy, and people need to be happy to thrive.

I might be not getting my full dollar's worth by buying ARX here in the States, but it was never calculated purchase anyway. Just money spend on imaginary spaceships to make the experience more enjoyable as well as provide the developer some funds to keep working on the game. 🤷‍♂️ Just my 2 cents (4 cents at current international exchange rates).

PS: I can buy Cyberpunk over at Steam, too. Don't know what that problem is all about.

As I said earlier, exchange rates change all the time. You never pay the exact same amount in a different currency. That's because shops are not the stock market. They don't react to changes simultaneously. Currencies change multiple times per day. You would need to come up with a program that changes your store price every few minutes. And that's not something isolated to Elite Dangerous. It happens all around the world, all the time. It's also not something isolated to the US either. As a German I also pay more € than £. If I would be in Argentina I would save 2/3. Welcome to planet earth. 🤷‍♂️

Helpful link, I believe Marvin does not have 'mature content enabled' set on Steam.

Anyway, to chime in on the actual topic: Fdev are not pulling anybody's leg with the Arx prices. They've set the price, it offers what says on the tin, there's no lootboxes or RNG or incremental resource accumulation or other scummy psuedo-gambling monetization schemes that are so prevalent everywhere else you look in the gaming world today; it's straightforward good business. And the skins even look pretty good in general.

If you want to try and jump through conversion rate holes to get a price more favorable to your personal dollar, there's multiple methods by which you are enabled to do so, free and clear. Paypal is not the only one, it's just the most widespread and accessible. Whatever their transgressions with the SEC are, they've never done anything wrong with my purchases.
A key thing to remember is that a lot of companies will actually hedge currencies over (for example) a 6 month period to insulate themselves from fluctuations if there is a volatile market. This allows them to forecast their projected income with a better degree of certainty than trying to price in rampant inflation, countries led by unstable leaders flexing their muscles on their neighbours or oil producers trying to swell their coffers for more sports washing.
