Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

@Tyres O'Flaherty
Okey-doke, as per your wise recommendation I have now purchased a Dolphin. I'm about to check your loadout for it in Coriolis and do all that ASAP.
Then I'll get the stuff I need to visit Felicity Whatsname so she can hopefully give it that ginormous great jump range of 350LYs. (I won't be dumping the Asp X btw as I want to keep all my ships - as collector's items if nothing else. :p )

Hmm.

I tend to stock up and keep an eye on the markets. When the price is right - and the timing - I'll infest a system with my presence, load the cutter up (multiple times maybe) then meet the demand :D

It's called corporate greed and it keeps O'Flaherty Industries afloat - I pay off governments who welcome the kickbacks and mess with public taxes under the fictional premise it will promote growth.

^ My face when doing this.
That is EXACTLY what I plan on doing.

Don't waste your time on LTD's. They're essentially worthless now. They used to be the thing to mine a year or two ago, but now they average about half what other elements like Monazite and Musgravite are worth.
Nothing you can mine and sell for more than the cost of the fuel and limpets expended is worthless.

However as is often the case somethings have a higher price than others and what provides insane levels of profit changes due to things like fashion or over supply or too much exploitation.

It is when there are readily available alternatives.

Every single LTD you put in your hold cost you roughly 350,000 credits. They literally cost you the same amount that they are worth. It's like filling up with gold rather than saving your cargo space for platinum, or mining tritium.

Time is money. So is storage space.

The only reason you ever do that is absolute desperation.

I understand your point, but disagree with your line about desperation, not everyone in the game needs large amounts of credits.

But I think my point is still valid it is difficult to loose money mining, but you are right there is always a way to get even more credits if you put in enough effort.

not everyone in the game needs large amounts of credits.
That's completely counter-intuitive to the situation.

If you're already outfitted for core mining, then you are definitely in it for the money. It's much more difficult than laser mining and much more involved and takes double the amount of time and energy overall. Why you would waste that level of time and energy into collecting something worth less than half of what other cores go for?

It would be like going out mining for gold instead of platinum.

It's not any harder to find one than the other, so mining the lower valued item is, literally, a complete waste of time and resources...unless, as I mentioned earlier, you're out of cash, in a desperate situation, and you're sitting right next to a LTD hot spot.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the Dolphin!

One point to note: although I didn't mention it in my post, it was present on the Coriolis build - and that is my ship has a guardian frame shift drive booster fitted. I'm not sure what your status is when it comes to guardian gear

Aye, I saw that item on your Coriolis build and was wondering about it. I've already discovered it can't be sourced from normal outfitting, so I guess you have to get it from a specialised guardian frame shift drive booster vendor somewhere do you? As to what my status is for that, I've no idea at the moment. :censored:

Oh it's much more fun than that, it's a whole adventure (and a great one, very enjoyable and atmospheric). But it's not exactly trivial, especially for a newcomer. I'll leave the details to the various guides :)

Old but still mostly accurate:

Like a lot of things in ED, getting Guardian gear isn't easy at first - it takes practice but it is really rewarding. If you only get one Guardian article, I'd say the FSD booster ought to be it.

And, as @Codger says, it's a great experience visiting the sites. Very alien but also, I think, stark.
I'm just wondering, does the Guardian FSD booster do the trick for the Dolphin 350LY jump range by itself (along with all the normal outfitting on your build of course) or do you need engineering mods as well?

The booster will increase your single jump range so, in the end, your overall range will be greater. Alas, you can't engineer any Guardian modules - they come as is and are unmodifiable.

The boosters come in different grades sizes though. I can't remember what the lesser ones do, but the biggest booster (5H?) will increase your range by, iirc, 10.5 LYs.

On a completely different note, I'm now #599 on Inara. #1, I'm coming for your spot :D

In it for the money was definitely me before I bought and outfitted the fleet carrier as I wanted it, plus a few billion credits on to to be able to buy minerals off other commanders for the fun of it on expeditions as we are doing now.
I've done other things like shipping commodities for community goals which I have not done since the carrier purchase.
I can't think of a need for more credits, other than the challenge of seeing what profit I can make doing something different - and having a carrier does open up other opportunities to play at money making. The reason I'm core mining now is to have the experience of doing it in deep space with a view of a pretty blue nebula. If I wanted the most credits as a quick as I could get them, I'd go core mining in the same location you have been. You've done very well!
My mining results are not profit orientated. A mixed bag of different minerals, but still mostly monazite. The selling of them will be far from optimal being 15 to 20 tons of "this and that".
Other unusual core mining choices - shieldless Chieftain with 96t capacity. Can I fill the hold and have greater than 30% hull left on my return? I didn't manage that every trip, and core mining while looking over your shoulder for Thargoids is weird. The sounds of the Chief just make me think of Thargoid combat. I can't really use it for anything else now :ROFLMAO:

I'm not ruling out a trip to NGC 6842 Sector HR-V b2-1 3B just to see what results I can get. I am curious.

I think... that just maybe... the purchase of my FC was the greatest investment I ever made.

Ok thanks. That's a relief - I'd hate to have to do all that Guardian stuff then have to do all the engineering on top of it. I just want to get on with exploring and exobiologying ASAP!
