1.1 Beta - You're not missing anything

If anyone not on the Beta is wondering about FD's wonderful new update, here's the lowdown:

Everyone's supposed to test the game mechanic by repeating the same cargo run delivering food to a starport that just wants so many thousands of tons of food. There's a progress bar showing how much has been delivered just like on Blue Peter. In return for taking part you get 5% off metals at the starport for 2 days. If you deliver the most out of all participants you get 20,000CR as well.

And that's it. About 200 people have bothered to have a go at it and the progress bar's at about 6%, and it's not clear if enough Beta players will want to bother completing this pathetic excuse for co-operative play. They should send FD a message by boycotting Beta altogether and get on with boosting their rating in the real game instead. But they'd rather argue about whether the city lights are realistic enough or brag about how they've explored 37,000 light-years of empty star systems in Beta so that they get no credit for it in-game, or something equally irrelevant or obsessively dull.

FD couldn't have made their implementation of co-operative play any less fun or exciting no matter how hard they'd tried. So much for players' advertising their own missions on the bulletin boards, trading with each other, hiring each other, organizing raids, official races and tournament play with entry fees and cash prizes, all the exciting stuff that co-operative play was supposed to be about. So much for co-operative play then.

This is FD's first big update, and it's totally pathetic. There's no reason not to expect more of the same in future.

Oh but at least I finally got my Founder's Decal. But it's not golden or anything.[masked swearing redacted - please avoid this thank you]

mmm salt...

However I think the community objectives only reason to exist in order to try and concentrate some of the playerbase for the good gameplay that produces.

I'll stay out of the rest i've played way too many games to have believed in a fairytale patch.

Yep, totally underwhelming. At one point i thought i had logged into the main client by accident.

The little additions of little lights on the dark side of the planets is a nice touch but its only a touch. The dashboard has changed its lighting a bit, its a nice touch but its only a little touch.

The community goals - like you say are underwhelming.

After seeing the forums I haven't bothered with testing the beta. Seems like it's a mess.

Can't help but ask what are the Devs thinking? Where are their priorities? Why muck around with things that don't need changing? Where are the changes that are truly needed to improve the game? Only an opinion of course. But did we really need changes to heat mechanics, a new landing hologram, community tasks, lights on the planets, etc.? How about making naval rank worth something. Make earning rep mean something. Make missions worthy of something. Even permits to systems mean nothing other than seeing stuff that exists elsewhere.

Slowly losing hope / interest here... :(

Love this. Wait for Beta. Wait for Gamma. Wait for release. Wait for a few more months.

Ive been around since Alpha and i have heard all of this over and over again. In my honest opinion the game hasn't changed much at since mid Alpha except to get bigger and a few bare bones "features" implemented in a rush at the end.

Have anyone of you seen the massive list of bug fixes and changes in the release notes?
There were many changes and fixes - and sometimes the hardest ones to fix are those that have little visible impact. They have been very busy in deed - making many many changes, in addition to working on the coming wings update.

"Underwhelming"? Yeah, right.

Almost all of the "fixes and updates" I saw were insignificant and cosmetic. A big Yawner.

Wings should be called what it is: The first ED multiplayer patch. Don't fool yourselves.

that's it? not 'this is the lame ass dumb beyond belief goal they gave us to test but there are tonnes of amazingly great fantastic ones primed for live in a week or so time'? Why on earth is anyone going to particapte in that, I am missing something, surely. I heard there was one that was about a station being built, do you get to see the station being constructed, or does it just magically appear one day? It would be kind of cool to see a huge construction being created in space with all the associated animation as the community feeds the workers, brings resources and goods, even if we can not directly particpate in the building itself

I think there are a couple of issues here. First any progress in the Beta of 1.1 does not count towards progress in the full game. So why would you want to spend a lot of time in the Beta when you could actually be progressing in the full game? Secondly are people actually that interested in community goals? I had a look at it and saw the progress and it's not exactly racing ahead. To be honest it put me off joining in seeing how little it had progressed. I also realised that essentially I prefer Elite Dangerous as a single player experience, I'm just not that interested in this huge community push to take food somewhere. I guess that makes me a bad man but Elite for me is about your own journey. Also I think a lot of people are just using the Beta to test weapons and stuff on the cheap, you can buy a viper for 100 credits and use the rest of the cash to load up with your weapons of choice.
.
That said the city lights are very pretty indeed. :D

Yea, it looks a bit - meh tbh, not sure if I want to bother with station building events at all. I wont do it so yea - don like it dont do it is correct here ;).

Yes, we will see the station during construction. Have you not seen the picture released of the partially built Orbis Starport? (It's in the newsletter).

Exactly, the 1.1 patch is basically a HUGE bug fix patch. Almost zero content. Giant bug fix patches and sweeping changes happen at the end of Beta phase or when an expansion is released when things get re-balanced or new systems are added.

This game NEEDS content more then anything right now. This patch doesn't address the biggest underlying issues the game has. City lights, HUD lighting etc could have been added at ANY point in a small update and it wouldn't matter because it doesn't change gameplay or improve it in ANY WAY.

The community goals as described by the OP is exactly what I feared they would be: Boring and pointles just like everything else at the moment. Instead of making something compelling to play, they applied the same level of thought and quality to it as every other mission and objective in the game: bare minimum to say "it works". 20k Cr and discount on metals? Really? thats it? I can go blow up a wanted ship and make more in 5 mins then bothering to do even MORE space trucking to see a % bar move.

This patch = 1.1 Le Sigh.

Yes my friend im afraid so.

The game still looks and behaves like the main build so much so that i thought i was playing the main build until i checked and re-loaded. Yep I was playing the beta 1.1 it turned out. It was only the addition of the lights on the planets dark side that gave it away - i didnt even notice the dashboard difference until it was pointed out in the beta forum using a picture comparison.
