Maybe take some time out and do something else?
It's what the launcher uses and it checks it periodically anyway.
It's checking the server status though, not whether there's a new release. Check for updates will check for a release, it won't refresh the status indicator.
Sometimes the servers are back up before the new client is release, sometimes it's the other way around.
These downtimes have a much greater impact on people where their timezone means it's play time, not "checking the forums whilst I'm a work time". I feel for you guys that have their gaming evening interrupted. Hopefully it'll be over Soon(TM)

My launcher has a Server status traffic-light on the right above the ad for Elite Horisons
The launcher does tell you. Right hand side: server status. Currently it has an amber light and "Upgrading".

Right after the long-range missions were nerfed.

He didn't seem cheesed off to me. It was a handy geeky link, that I'm personally now using and am thankful for Ian pointing out. +1 to him.
I know text can be easily misinterpreted by I for one don't see how you made the leap to cheesed off?

On the launcher, just above the advert for Horizons on the right hand side, there is "Server Status: [] (text)". Currently on mine (12:58BST) the box is orange and the text is 'upgrading'.
