Newcomer / Intro 10 minutes in super cruise to get to station???

I recently picked up a delivery mission that was only one jump away. (I just started this game recently so there's a lot I dont know.) But it seemed a little odd that once I got to the next system I locked the station I had to deliver the goods to and the it was on the edge of the system. It literally took me 10 minutes (for real) to fly out there in super cruise. There has to be something I'm missing! Is it really valid that these places take that long to get to??

I'm literally scared to take another contract (that was my first one ever) I don't want to be wasting 10 minutes of my free time in a game doing nothing. Am I missing something?

Hi check the destination before you take the mission.

There's a tab that says open galaxy map. Click on it. Then click on the system map.

Plan your trips and choose missions that suit your play style.

.... and watch out when taking any missions to Alpha Centauri - if the outpost destination is Hutton Orbital then that's a 90 minute SuperCruise away from the arrival point (0.22 LY or c.7,000,000 Ls)

As Ben says - check the destination of your mission. At the bottom of the mission description on the mission board is a selection for Galaxy Map, that opens the galaxy map, centred on the destination system. If the system map icon on there is not red, you can click that to open the system map to see where the destination station lies. If the system map icon is red you can either take a chance, use a third-party website like EDDB.io to check the stations distance from arrival or ignore the mission.

... and like Robert says, Alpha Centauri is a bit of a devil. ;)

I remember that was also the case in Elite:First Encounters...To reach the station in Alpha Centauri also took a while back then ;)

"Wasting" of free time is something that you'll be doing quite a lot if you plan on getting anywhere in ED. It's just part of how it goes! Supercruise should give you ample time to eat some snacks, maybe browse social media, use the bathroom (if you're not a target for pirates). I've even done the dishes while waiting out a supercruise jaunt.

Really? Why on earth take missions that require long SC journeys?

I ignore anything over say 5Kls and on trade runs (i.e. not missions) I exclude any station more than 2 Kls and only do that far if there is no other source within 2 jumps.

When exploring it needs a good chance of ELW, WW or Ammonia-World for me to travel to secondary stars over a few Kls.

Keep in mind that whilst in super cruise you are burning fuel, people have run out on long runs (especially Hutton Orbital) and without fuel you have no power so your life support will fail so don't get too distracted by other things, also after a long cruise when next in a station check advanced maintenance as you hull integrity will have dropped and the lower that is the easier it is to damage things on your ship.

Just out of interest, how many c's are the maximum? I've gone up to 800, I think, on 400,000ls.

So when i check the map and look how far the travel is away from the star, what is a good distance and where does it get bad?

That depends on you. Personally, I am much more relaxed about such things than Mr. Yorks above. I will do runs out to about 250,000ls from the entry point (they take a few minutes but I am not into the credits per hour mindset and I am usually listening to something nice on the radio anyway), but beyond that there has to be a very good reason for me to travel so far. As always with this game, each to their own.

Also, and I might have this wrong, the time taken between entry point and destination can be, to a certain extent, shaved by the path that you choose to take. Flying flat and direct is I think slower than flying a parabolic path.

If the mission pays significantly more money than all other missions, there has to be a reason.l ;) sometimes it's advanced danger, sometimes long journey (even if it's "only" 1 jump)

10 minutes is nothing, i guess arou d 100k ls? Some other places are around 200k to 600k ls away, hutton orbital is 6 million (!) ls away and it takes real 1 1/2 hours to get there.

So you had very much luck with your 10 minutes^^ just take a look where your delivery place is before accepting the mission. The best indicator is the increased payout. Don't become greedy and ask always why this specific mission pays better than others ;)
Personally, everything up to 100.000 ls is okay for me, everything else needs good reasons or very very good payout.

You took that mission because it payed well, right? If a mission has a 1.5-2x payout compared to the others offered at a station, there is usually a catch. And aside of one rated for a Elite trader, a long(er) SC is usually the culprit. Why else would it pay better?

As others have said, on those 'looks too good to be true' missions, pull up the map and find out exactly where that station is. I found this out the hard way of course...

And, as others have said, you can check your phone, or in my case, my iMac is right next to my PC gamer and usually has this site loaded so I can catch up on threads. As for 'wasting time', you are playing a game. So by definition you are 'wasting time'. ;)

I completely disagree with playing a game being wasted time. I'm doing a number of things by playing a game. i'm relieving stress, I'm engaging a part of my brain i dont usually use in my job or elsewhere in my life. And most importantly, I'm using time that I have earned by working hard and providing myself with the life that I want.

I worked so I could have free time to do with as I please. That's not a waste of time. Having a life I know will end one day and doing something I dont want to do despite my free will and ability to act just because of someone else's judgement of what they think i should be doing with MY time is the only true waste of time unless it is out love, of course. But don't be brainwashed that idleness or well-earned pleasure is somehow a waste of time. Free time leads to contemplation and the greatest selfimprovmement comes from that! It's your life and your time to spend as you want. Doing something that makes you happy is not a waste!

For me, playing a game is a great experience, but if the game has me sitting idle for 10 - 20 minutes, THAT's time i could have used to do something else I actually enjoy.

But anyway, Yeah. is there a way to figure out time/distance shown on map?

You can note the name of the destination system and dock - and go into the Galaxy Map, search for the system and, using the System Map, find the station (assuming that you have access to the system data).

Failing that, open a browser, go to https://eddb.io/system and type in the system name - it will list all of the docks and associated distances.

It's not a linear relationship, because you go faster the further you are from a planet or star. From the threshold you've said, I would guess that you probably don't want to be looking at anything where the distance from arrival point is more than 20,000 Ls, and you would probably prefer to keep to distances under 5000 Ls.
