1080 setup question(s)

Just a quick question for the gurus... :)

Just upgraded from a 960 to a 1080. Lovely and smooth now, VR settings on High with SS @ 0.85 and HMD Quality at 1.5 frame rates are pretty solid 90, dropping to 45 in station and probably on planets. Will continue experimenting with settings, would people here think that Ultra would be a better place to start?

My main question though, is after looking at another thread here where it was suggested to use a display adapter -> HDMI adapter for the rift, I got such an adapter, but when I plug the rift in through that it seems not to be getting a display feed. The PC knows it is there (through the USB I would guess), but the headset remains dark. Plugging it directly into the HDMI port and it works great.

Am I doing something wrong?

This is the adapter I got.

On my system the Rift only has a display if it is plugged into the HDMI port. Using an adaptor I can never get it to display anything. Running a 1060 here

Pretty sure your card will stick to the first output used for the primary display, it can be changed, but not sure how. I suspect in the graphics settings on your PC + a reboot. I'm a few hours away from my machine, so can't test it.

That adapter is fine, I have one like it for my Rift.

Thanks for the response. The rift was plugged into the adapter first, but there's also a monitor running off the DVI connection. Unplugging it from the adapter and into the HDMI worked straight away without a reboot, and of course the monitor is still there. I'll take a look at graphics settings.

Here are my settings for Elite using the Pimax BE headset, which is close enough to the Rift/Vive in terms of resolution

When looking at the back of the computer the connections are like this on my 1080

[DP1] [DP2] [HDMI] [DP3]

-none- -none- -Pimax- -Monitor-

disabled the on-board GPU

Not sure why someone would recommend using a DP>HDMI adapter - you're going to be bandwith limited by the HDMI cable/circuitry inside the headset anyway.

Also, just looked at the specs of the adapter you posted - the rift is higher resolution than the maximum that adapter supports. that might be your problem.

Thanks. What is your frame rate like with those settings?

I have turned bloom, blur and ambient occlusion off, but have SS and HMD image quality higher. I'll give your settings a go and see how it looks.

Yes, that could be it. People using an adapter have generally recommended a different one, so might try that. I am led to understand that color (and also blacks) are better quality when coming through a DP.

As I understand it there are actually two ways of adressing this issue (it's to do with nvidia not outputting full dynamic range and you not being able to change that for the VR headset). One way is to simply use an adapter, the other way is to temporarily plug your monitor into the socket you'd normally plug your HMD into, then use the nvidia settings to turn on full dynamic range, then swap the connections back again (note: I may have these things the wrong way around but that's the gist of it). The downside with the latter approach is that you have to do it every time there's a graphics update.

To be honest, I've never bothered with obsessing over frame rates. The game runs with absolutely no stutter or pauses at all, and I don't feel any motion sickness at any point, and it looks great (I posted up a couple of pictures on the recent Pimax 8k thread taken through the lens of my existing headset if you wanted to check them out)

Thanks Alec. Yes, dynamic range was what I was looking for. Frankly not sure it would make a huge amount of difference with my eyesight these days. :D

The adapter I'm looking at seems similar to the one you reference. I'll probably give it a go. Frankly, just updating to the 1080 has made a huge difference, mainly in terms of the frame rate which is a solid 90 fps in flight and 45 fps in stations, menus and planets. Compared to the 960 experience it's lovely and smooth, much less strain on the eyes. :)

Thanks, I will. :)

Not really obsessing over the frame rate, but I found that with the poor fps I was getting before I could really only play for an hour or so before it became uncomfortable, and the first couple of forays with the 1080 have been much, much smoother.

I hear you, I recently upgraded my 1060 to a 1080 and it's been great!

3570k@4.4ghz, 16gb ram, EVGA ACX SC 1080 here. Im basically resigned to always being in 45fps/ASW mode. The only time I see a consistent 90fps is in super cruise and frankly who cares about super cruise? I want 90 on planets, 90 in RES, I want 90 in CZs and thats just not gonna happen. Even if I use VR low preset I still get 45fps/ASW in a RES/CZ so I might as well crank up settings for visual fidelity. Im on my MacBook Pro so I can't remember what settings I use, but I know its .85 SS and 1.5 HMD, HMD quality being the most important factor. I will not use anything less than 1.5.

make sure you set the NVidia control panel to high performance and pre rendered frames to 4

Where do you find those settings? I've looked everywhere for them, but they're not there... :D

I think this may be why I was looking at the DP -> HDMI converter as it gives more options.

I'm pretty sure I get 90 everywhere except planets and inside stations where I get 45. I'll have to check in combat, normally a bit busy to squint through the gap to see... :D

That said, the game always runs nice and smooth which was my main goal. I have SS at .75 and HMD quality at 2.0. Text is still a bit blurry, but that might well be my eyesight, certainly quite readable though, and the uncomfortable feeling I was getting with the 960 are gone. I can play for much longer stretches now.

One thing I have noticed is that whenever a new instance loads I get a few seconds of low and variable fps, and then it settles to either 90 or 45 depending on the location. I wouldn't notice it if I wasn't looking at the readout, so it's not something I worry about.

My PC, which I only use for Elite (I'm a Mac guy all the way otherwise) is i7-6700 @3.41GHz, 32 GB Ram.
