Why use Steam for EVE's numbers when you've got this?

Simple.
To show the difference between Steam stats and reality.
As your link to Eve-offline.net shows.

Bigger Problem is.
The Engineers Update was Fairly Hyped.
The majority on this forum dont care about Steam Charts.![]()
I remember the hype trains!

Many many a hype train!
chooo chooo!
Remember though the passionate ED players purchased straight from FDEV's own publishing, rather than much much much later through STEAM.
The chances are that STEAM players are trend players, who stick to nothing in particular, and have huge libraries diluting their play time. I know that three of my other fav games on steam at the moment 'Subnautica', 'Ark Survival' and 'Space Engineers' recently underwent some major updates, which were very interesting and strayed me from ED
I'd like to say that STEAM numbers are indicative of ED popularity, but alas it's not. STEAM numbers just follow trends in a very fickle way, and do not actually provide numbers on the absolute loyal playerbase subscribed through FDEVS own publishing.
3431 players playing elite on steam is a lot for a game like elite that is not suited for the genral audiance.
On top of that this number does not count :
Mac players
PC players who dont use steam
Xbox players
If elite pandered to the lowest common denominator then it would just become a dull instant gratification dumbed down game aimed at those who like the more casual games like NMS and COD
Really makes me chuckle seeing the usual types here trying to pretend that steam, one of the biggest games platforms around is not relevantA bit like having a wheel drop off your car and saying "thats ok, dont use it that much anyway and have 3 more".. Of COURSE steam is important considering they actually went to so much bother to get it on steam in the first place, its not there by co-incidence! Anyone with eyes can see the player numbers are dropping, plenty of sales but not a lot of retention.
The problem is, they are not dropping. People just don't know how to use and read statistics.Really makes me chuckle seeing the usual types here trying to pretend that steam, one of the biggest games platforms around is not relevantA bit like having a wheel drop off your car and saying "thats ok, dont use it that much anyway and have 3 more".. Steam numbers showed a couple of times before that the game is dead, there have been threads and all that. In 100% of these cases it turned out the game is living on just fine, so do you have any good reason why I should take that stuff serious?Really makes me chuckle seeing the usual types here trying to pretend that steam, one of the biggest games platforms around is not relevantA bit like having a wheel drop off your car and saying "thats ok, dont use it that much anyway and have 3 more".. I do find it funny with STeam though - when it was announced it was going to steam the community was up in arms wants codes to transfer it across to steam
Short term the numbers have gone up since 2.1. Looking semi long term (since the winter sale) they have dropped, BUT...that's true for most games.
We can see similar drops in steam stats for GTAV, EVE Online, Team Fortress 2, Civ 5, Counter Strike and so on...(there are of course always exceptions)
Sales create peaks that then drops of...all of the major peaks in ED numbers (and the following "player drop") on Steam can be traced to sales (and that is true for most games.) ED hasn't had a sale since December. The Summer sales will once again create a peak when it comes.
Context is important.
Not being a subscription game also makes this somewhat irrelevant. The important thing is how they are selling and we have no idea of the number of Horizons sales since there are no stats of that and it doesn't show on Steam. Nor is Steam the only platform they are selling on. So these stats are really muddy waters now.
For me there are really three things that are important.
1. Do I personally enjoy the game? Yes I do.
2. Do FD intend to continue developing the game? Yes they do.
3. Is FD in the financial position to do so? Yes they are based off their latest trade updates.
Pushing through the market square,
so many mothers sighing
News had just come over,
we had five months left to cry in
Braben wept and told us,
Elite was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet,
then I knew he was not lying
I heard engine sounds, cannon fire, atmospheric melodies
I saw CMDRs, ships, stations and SRVs
My brain hurt like a cargo rack, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the harmless-elite players,
and all the rich-poor players
and all the nobody players,
and all the somebody players
I never thought I'd need so many players
We've got five months, stuck on my eyes
We've got five months, what a surprise
We've got five months, my brain hurts a lot
We've got five months, that's all we've got
