2 hours wasted.

Its a little unfair to criticise the OP for the durability of his ship in this instance I think. He presumably went into the mining session knowing that NPCs spawn, perhaps allowed himself to get scanned while he had an empty cargo hold and then set about filling it knowing that the disappointed pirates had gone back to their starving families and that he wouldn't be scanned again.

If he'd knowingly logged out and back in again then he'd only have himself to blame but that isn't what happened. If the servers do their job and remain stable, there's no reason why you can't safely mine in a shieldless stock ship with a hull made out of weetabix (in solo mode, which OP said he was in) if you know how the NPCs spawn/act (notwithstanding crashing into an asteroid but you'd only have yourself to blame for that). NPC interdictions are easily avoided on the way to selling the loot too.
The thing is, the OP left themselves in a position that they would be blown up if they left the game for any reason if they were still in the ring. Relying on my internet being perfect, the PC not throwing a wobbly, RL not interfering as well as the game not having any issues seems to be asking a lot.

Is a T9 (even engineered) able to easily evade an NPC interdiction? It has the worst maneuverability rating right?

Absolutely true story, almost identical to OP. Last week I was mining in a shielded cutter. Solo mode, 2 hours mining, 250+ LTDs. Went to the bathroom, came back... disconnect screen. Reconnected, rebuy screen. Was I dumb to leave my ship unattended? Yep. Lesson learned? Yep.

I suspect all cmdrs get the occasional rebuy screen "unfairly". And you learn to fly safer, take less risks, etc. There are no safety or fairness guarantees in ED.

I dunno...

Everyone who has done more than 2-3 mining runs knows this can and will eventually happen.
Now that NPCs spawn out of nowhere all the time is a known issue and debated to death. ELITE is a scripted Arcade Game in that respect, that's just how things are.

So the very first thing you check are those NPC contacts that most likely will appear and check their type.
If their type is most likely hostile... that's what either the Hardpoints or the Boost function are for.

Is that really so difficult?
Now that I use a mining vette, bristling with more MC than mining lasers, I'm always a little bummed when pirates are not spawned in this situation. Sometimes I get system cops or other npc miners, but sometimes I get the prize wing of pirates. Once it was a wing with a T10 😁

I had a bit of fun the last time this happened to me:

He didn’t get me, but glad I had shields...

I felt like Han Solo dodging Tie Fighters in them there ‘roids...

It does crack me up when you get so far away that they're not either on your scanner, yet they still insist on telling you how they're going to kill you.

Want another way to waste two hours, maybe a little easier on your ship(s)? Try to find a Silicate Ice Geyser. Twenty-one geological sites so far and I've found every other kind of Silicate volcanism, but not that one. :(

Fighting off pirates sounds like a lot more fun ;) Good advice has been given, and in particular waking out as a reflex after an unexpected log-out/log-in. I tend to hunt rocks from just above/below the ring so I have a clearer path to break Mass Lock and hightail it out of Dodge if necessary. Getting caught out in a dense ring setting can be troublesome.

Just did a 2 hour tritium mining session when the server threw me out. Logged back in (solo) and instantly had 3 hostiles appear right on top of me. No scan, no nothing, just boom.

That's ridiculous.

And please don't say "it's called Elite Dangerous" cos I already gently caressing know that.

I notice they drop right on top of you now firing, no warning or anything. They show up right between me and the landing pad on the carrier, out of nowhere and I run into them. Happens all the time.

I mine in a weaponless Cobra Mk4 and laugh about (NPCs only of course) pirates as well. You also could call it Elite: Predictable, as that's what has happened to the OP: NPCs pirates are totally harmless as long as you have no cargo. Otherwise, be ready to "donate" what they demand or run/ high wake as soon as you see some wobbly targets. Technically it was a fresh "log in" and it's very common that you are greeted by a pirate committee in gas giant rings. That's how it works in Solo (in civilised space, far out in deep space there are no pirates btw...)

edit:
Forget my advice, just saw it was already told to you...
You're talking about something different than the OP is talking about. We all know pirates show up at first instance in a mining site, but since the update they not only show up, they do so right on top of you, like a few meters from your nose, and you either run into them or they are firing when they arrive. It's as if they already asked you to donate to the cause and you ran.

Okay so it's not just me that's noticing this. Had a Mamba do this to me despite me being throttle down and not moving at when when it arrived.

I'm ok with it as long as they play along, like they engage at your carrier but nope, they somehow magically HW just a couple seconds after appearing.

OH and I won't mine tritium when it's for sale for 4K per ton. I'll mine something else and trade up with a big profit.

I had an adder (yes an adder) try to interdict me while I was in an anaconda. Once I submitted (because why not) the adder was a T-10 and it dropped on my canopy. Those Thargoids really did a job on the natural order of things.
