2080TI - getting 30fps inside station in VR

Yes - just received my 2080TI and was looking forward to seeing Elite Dangerous in all it's VR Ultra glory.

My other specs are AMD Ryzen 1700x 3.4mhz which I have not overclocked because I have always been scared to, 16Gb RAM (Corsair Vengeance 2400) Windows 10 on an SSD etc. I am bitterly disappointed with what I am seeing in Elite in VR using ULTRA (which I thought would be at least possible. Using Oculus Tray Tool and showing performance I can only achieve 45 fps and it is showing horrendous amounts of dropped frames this is inside the station just after launch. Is it the processor? the amount or speed of RAM? or a combination? Obviously I broke the bank buying the 2080TI (upgraded from a 1070) and this game more than any other was the one I wanted to see in all its glory and I don't have any options for upgrading anything else for a while. I think I may have Just made a very expensive mistake.

There is something amiss with Stations in Elite, there has been since the update which added the new interiors to them. Poor frame rates are very common while CPU / GPU usage appears quite low... Its been reported to FDEV many times and I'm yet to see a report which wasn't ignored, closed, moved to some obscure part of the bug reporting sub forum or simply waited out with stall tactics and then archived.

I'm running: i7 8700k @4.6Ghz, 32Gb of 3000Mhz DDR4 RAM, ASUS GTX1080Ti OC edition with the game running on an M2 SDD. Even on that spec stations stutter and splutter and produce low frame rates from time to time, if you want good frame rates in stations you literally have to lower every other GFX setting down, which is a shame as I'm sure your frames are just fine in 90% of the other locations in game.

I've seen people state that the 1709 Windows 10 update was the cause and that a fresh OS install resolves the problem. I can tell you first hand that it does not. Stations in VR are poorly optimised (as is the station UI screen) and needs work, work that FDEV does not want to do from what I can tell by the way they handle bug reports on this subject.

Ultra settings in ED should not be an issue with 2080TI.
Check the supersampling multiplier, HMD image quality multiplier and also the multiplier in steam VR. Those settings make or break FPS performance.

I seem to remember a long while back that the game suffered from performance hits on high end cards, where lower spec cards didn't get hit. I have a 1080Ti, and so far haven't saw anything obvious in VR in that regard, I may just not have been to certain stations or am lucky.

Unfortunately I agree with other comments here, VR is being ignored by Fdev. and I have a Windows Odyssey headset. The images are stunning until your ripped for reality by judder
In the Beta, they seem to have forgotten to test the FSSS all together as you have to somehow click past the help screen that you can't see! I also have outstanding support tickets that are un answered

I have the supersampling multiplier at 1.5, nothing in Steam and HMD image multiplier at 1.
In steam VR there is SS multiplier which shows resolution per eye chceck that and add 50% from SS in game maybe the resulting resolution is just too high.

Remember Adams comment on the live stream about if it was playable in VR? "I've played it in VR and.....well... yeah...." I thought at the time it was a rather lackluster answer and quite odd with the pregnant pauses.

There is no need to be afraid of OCing the Ryzen 1700x.

1. make sure you rise the RAM speed as far as possible while maintaining the best CAS Latency possible. Your kit would be set at CL14 by default I guess. But for high fps you want to optimize latency on your CPU-RAM combination as much as possible. This is for your Ryzen done on one hand by upping the memory frequency so the CPU internal Infinity Fabric clocks higher and minimizes internal delays, the RAM CL settings should have priority as these are stressed by the video driver more. Refer to this article, you look for best combination in nano seconds for your setup really, while when almost a match you choose the upper overall RAM speed.
2. for ED all the cores of the CPU will be used all the time. For your Ryzen that results in a 3.5 GHz all core clock rate by default, because with more then 2 corese active it clocks down. You want (after optimizing RAM and subsequently infinity fabric speeds) to raise the all core clockrate as much as possible, your GPU will immediately profit too. Try the Ryzen Master Tool of AMD for that purpose.

Background is that the nVidia drivers do a lot of work in scheduling GPU calls on the CPU. You want that happen as fast as possible. nVidia drivers do profit a lot of low latency in the CPU domain, but make no mistake by eliminating cores, all the cores you have are necessary because a high pixel resolution will stress your CPU in a way that more cores are better than less when it comes to minimum fps. I'm not sure to what extend the SMT (hyperthreading) benefits the nVidia drivers or ED, you might wanna try to switch it off, but I would not expect better results.
On the memory side the low standard RAM rates of Ryzen CPUs are because of official JEDEC specs when Ryzen was released and also the early AGESA firware of the CPUs. Today it should be possible to run 3200 (2x1600MHz) or at least 2933 on any board. I'm not so sure about your RAM type, however the Vengance series is marketed as overclockers brand by Corsair. They come with XMP wich is in AMDs terms DOCP that should be enabled in mainboard bios.

I had such a CPU running with a 3200 Kit at CL14-14-14-32 which was quite satisfying. With an AiO water cooler i got it on all cores to 3.9GHz which is pretty much standard for those, it's rather the mainboard, RAM or power supply that set a lower limit. When upping the speeds just go step by step, there won't be any damage but instability, you then back down from there...
With upgrading the CPU to a Zen+ variant you would eliminate most of the OC hassle, because these implemented better internal OCing aka boosting techniques, that's what i did in summer mainly for the better boosting and top frequencies. But since Zen2 variants may only be some 6mths away it could be worthwhile to wait for those...

Go into the NVIDIA control panel and force "threaded optimization" to "On" to see if that helps at all.

I heard that the 2080 series in general is not faster than the 1080 series. They have some new features in addition and cost a lot more. But they are not faster.

Basically, incorrect... The RTX series will trade blows with the next size higher in the GTX 10 series. For instance, the RTX 2080 will trade blows with the GTX 1080ti, some times faster, sometimes a bit slower. As drivers get optimized for the RTX series you can expect better performance. On a price vs performance, it can be hard to justify as the RTX is quite a bit higher in price than the actual performance boost you get.

Wow that sounded - interesting - but having read it twice ,no idea what that means. But thank you for reply.

maybe here for a start?
since you don't want to spend money there is only tweaking possible...what is your mainboard and bios version?

There is currently some very weird things about how Elite runs and what limits performance. I have cases where it locks at 45 fps and GPU and CPU usage drops bellow 50%. Its as if the game decides to just do half the job. (This is with ASW off)

I have found that playing with SS settings can alleviate some of these issues.

Have a look at your CPU and GPU usage when you get these low framerates to try and see what is happening with your rig at those moments.

Hmm that sounds unusually low. I'm running a 2080Ti and a 9900k and I can run slightly modified VR Ultra (Not Ultra) and 1.5xSS in the debug tool and almost maintain 90 in stations - heavy frame time spikes though so dropped frames are common.

I just turn ASW on permanently and then crank everything up - I know ASW is not everyone's cuppa but for me it's become essential in everything i play in VR.
