2yrs and counting...

I remain in explored space & the functionality works just fine. There was no need to remove that functionality, the devs chose to for gameplay reasons. Putting them back in would be just another design choice for gameplay reasons that they have said would detract from the intended game (I forget the exact quote).

It's just a choice, but one made (needlessly) long after the functionality was added. But with no corresponding benefit in this case, they could have just left them in & didn't :)

Didn't affect most people, it affected me though.
Sadly, once Frontier change anything in this game there'll always be winners & losers.
Frontier had hardly done any changes in Exploration since day 1. They finally got around to doing something & that was their renewed attempt to 'improve' Exploration.
Was it around that time that they had 'Focus Threads' but never got round to the Exploration one?

Yet here you are :)

So with 2 years of hindsight, how would leaving those modules in the game have affected you? Do you (or did you) have a vested interest?

As someone who explores a lot in the game it would most certainly have affected me and of course i have a vested interest.

Do i think the change was for the better? I'm 50/50 on it. I liked the ability to reveal the whole system at once, but i do think the changes increased the depth of the game. What is it people like to say about ED? Mile wide, inch deep? Well, FD added depth, addressed the concerns of all those who complained about exploration being just jump, honk, and of course, some people were not going to like the change.

Not the point i'm addressing though. My point is, FD are not going to reintroduce the ADS like it was, and i normally avoid firm statements like that, but i think i'm on solid ground with this one.

Yes you can in this case, by putting the three old modules back into outfitting. Of course not removing them in the first place would have been less trouble.

But then there would be two ways of achieving the same thing for the same reward, but one quicker than the other. Which will people use given the choice? Now, i know what you say. Those who want the other version would be free to use it, but i'm sure you know that to be a silly argument before you even make it. If we are going down that road, why don't FD add a mining laser then that breaks core rocks instantly? Don't remove the old method of placing charges. People could still use that. But for those who want quicker and simpler, add a weapon that just cracks them instantly!

We do have variants in mining, laser mining, which is quicker and simpler, but the idea is (if not always executed well) is that core mining is more profitable. Great! We see a potential solution here.

Bring back the old ADS, but make it less profitable to use than the FSS. And no cheesing either! You use one or the other. Once revealed with the old ADS, the FSS won't work on it to increase profit.

Food for thought?

Not that it matters, because, FD aren't going to do it :p

Better yet, don't let it make anything. Honk = no money.

Nope. Because Elite will become an FPS in space. Because that's what the cool kids want.

Exploration was, is, and will be a missed opportunity in Elite. The best feature in Elite, the Stellar Forge, is just a side show.

I thought all the cool kids wanted atmosphere planets like no mans sky.

Space legs was just a bone the threw to the erp community.

Even my fave gas giants cross your fingers for that.

Actually i just wanted to get out of my seat. That was it. But because we're not getting that will just stick to wanting nothing and hope its a pleasant surprise.

I like exploration now actually. I used to complain, but zero travel and instant gratification on tags... instant!

Get your MEGA hats here.
Make Exploration Great Again.

Bring back the ADS.

The issue wasn't the exploration mechanics, it was that there is only a limited amount of new content to find out there...
Sure, endless various screenshots of 'stuff' but it doesn't take too long to get old. The exploration content isn't great. Sure, Stella Phenomena are interesting for a while. But there really isn't all that much to discover.
Planet types are limited (rock or ice). I had hoped that the terrain would get a serious buff to ice world's but that never happened... They probably decided to hold it over for Odyssey. 🤨

Exploration is great...
Pre-3.3, post 3.3... no complaints from me, although my personal opinion is that I enjoy it more since I have been able to find 'stuff' that I had never found in 'the good ole days' so may be a little more biased to post 3.3 🤷‍♂️

I'd already got exploration elite (and made a little over a billion credits from it) before 3.3 appeared - we make a lot more credits since... But, I have had a lot more fun since 3.3.
