4.0 Access on PC: FAQ

I see around 35% FPS gain changing from EDO to EDH (on both main PC and laptop) in space. If this is going to translate equally in 4.0 Horizons, those who are just making 60 FPS in EDH are going to notice it, but I'd love to be proven wrong!

I for one can confirm FPS drops from solid 60 in EDH to 30-45 in EDO in space (I don't do on-foot stuff), not to mention the quite noticeable decrease in visual quality.

So you can play the narrative that will only be available to players on 4.0, but of course if you don't care about that sure, stick with 3.8.
Thats's not what has been said. Lest see what the FAQ actually states:

So only thing not available in 3.8 will be "on foot content" - that still wont be available in EDH4.0 anyway.

So - unless you deny FDev any credibility (which would be rational BTW, as we have all been misled too many times) - the only thing that EDH4.0 will bring is performance drop. Something most of us can easily live without.

There's narrative content which isn't Community Goals and Galnet, and isn't "on foot", though.

The various post-Salvation things in HIP 22460 and the Thargoid Relic conversion process are available in Odyssey 4.0 only at the moment, but none of them require getting out of the spaceship+SRV so will also be available in Horizons 4.0 ... but they aren't present in Horizons 3.8.

It's not a massive difference yet - but it is already there.

That's entirely incorrect, it's been clearly stated that Horizons players on 4.0 will get Aftermath Narrative content except for the on foot components, 3.8 will receive nothing of the Aftermath Narrative content. Horizons 4.0 will receive Aftermath CG's that don't require on foot content, so space based CG's, and 3.8 will not get these, they will only get CG's that aren't part of the Aftermath Narrative. It says clearly 4.0 may receive exclusive CG's, it says nothing about these CG's being on-foot content, but there may be CG's that do require on-foot content, and only Odyssey players will get these. This has been made clear by FDEV numerous times.

I believe the 'aggressive hyperdictions' is also 4.0 only - in Horizons they're still quite passive. Though that was in Galnet, so maybe that doesn't count 🤔

I expect that will be 4.0 content only, 3.8 players probably won't see that behaviour, I expect the PC 3.8 content will remain synchronised with the console 3.8 content and remain for the most part in the pre-aftermath galaxy, but that's something we will have to wait for 3.8 players to let us know about.

Edit: And as you say - these changes are only going to build up as things roll out
That does lead to an amusing if highly unlikely possibility where in a year's time you load up 3.8 and the bubble is wandering along much as it always does ... and you load up 4.0 and half the systems have been depopulated and are completely occupied by extremely hostile Thargoids.

I respectfully disagree. Odyssey's Framerate still fluctuates too much during settlement battles, especially large ones. I don't really think it's a GPU issue either. I have a 3700X with an RTX 2080 TI, my system should be killing it during those instances but it's not. There's a bottleneck somewhere in their new renderer, or perhaps they need to do more CPU optimizations somewhere. Apart from that, Odyssey runs fine in Space, on planet surfaces, and in Station interiors. Although, I wouldn't consider that an accomplishment. Those areas are mostly empty spaces, and they still lag behind Horizons in terms of performance. Especially for an expansion that hardly looks better than its previous version.
Your system GPU should really be able to comfortably run with little issue. However, I have noticed (and commented on) that other unnameable Reddit sub, that the majority of users stating that their experience is below par also run with a Ryzen CPU.

The amount I see listing their specs overwhelmingly show this, even when the other components are way above the recommended (even though, I think that is too low myself). Now I'm not for one second saying that the old compatibility argument of Intel v AMD (when running a particular game) is still alive and well, but do your own research.. Obviously, all bad experiences aren't going to be running AMD, but it's definitely way above the Intel listed users with problems. I wouldn't count it out or get defensive, that's not my aim, but see and take notice yourself, when users post with their running problems.

I would guess systems with new Odyssey/4.0 content could be simply permit-locked for Horizons 3.8 players. It would be usual non-popular decision by FDev.

Yeah that's true, and that's one of the things that keep me in Odyssey along with many others, couldn't go back to all the suddenly vanished surface complexes we have in Odyssey, the galaxy would seem empty.

Keep in mind single threaded performance of current commonly used Ryzen CPU's is still below that of comparable intel CPU's, so no this current version isn't the best for gaming, however the Zen 4 architecture promises to reverse that completely. With a CPU heavy game current Intel CPU's will outperform Ryzen, next gen you may see a completely reversed data set.

Wrong. It is clearly stated "both of these will continue on 3.8". That what is written in that newest FAQ. Unless - as I stated - we deny FDev's FAQ any credibility.

Sorry, but...
Will 3.8 still receive Community Goals and GalNet Articles?

Yes, both of these will continue on 3.8 and contributions will be shared across versions.

So that's only about GalNet articles (which may contain Aftermath stuff also but idk...) and (non Aftermath related) CGs.
Nothing more, nothing less...

I don't know what you are reading, but the link to the FAQ in the very first post on this thread clearly states;

Will 3.8 receive further updates?

Essential maintenance updates will continue on 3.8, however new content and features will only be introduced to 4.0.

Essential maintenance only, new content and features ONLY in 4.0.

This seems clear and straightforward, 3.8 will not be getting the Aftermath Narrative updates.

Everything in the FAQ states the exact opposite of what you are claiming here, so I don't see where we are denying the credibility of the FAQ, you just seem to be not reading the same thing the rest of us are!

I don't see why PC players should get the option of 3.8 or 4.0.
I understand console is constrained to 3.8 only, but allowing 3.8 to remain on PC only gives a further avenue for issues to be raised from. - To which the answer is 'upgrade to 4.0'.
If Frontier as confident that 4.0 is the way forward (and that PC will never revert to 3.8), then I would force an update on the PC community.
It'll simplify the back-end estate (marginally but it will simplify the supported estate).
Doing it your way would mean players with low spec PCs that can run 3.8 but not 4.0 will no longer be able to play.

I imagine 3.8 is going to have the same galnet news as 4.0 and Ody, from my reading of the FAQ. Still the same galaxy. Just no actual gaming content.

Greetings Commanders,

Earlier this month we shared this post which described our plans to make 4.0 available to all PC users. We’d like to take this opportunity reiterate the purpose of this option and answer some of your questions. To that end please, read this FAQ on our website:

As always, thank you for your feedback and please ask any further questions you may have down below!

O7
Do Horizons 4.0's minimum system requirements differ from those of 3.8?
If (contrary to my expectations) someone else should have asked this question in this thread before, I'd like to apologize, my concentration level is too low to sift through all these posts...
