4.0 Access on PC: FAQ

FWIW the forum RSS is a bit botched and can cause this kind of confusion.

I asked on the EDCD discord, apparently it's because "The date on an "item" in the feeds is the latest post, not the original date Which means that in the feed data, old posts show up as new ones just because somebody posted something new in the thread".

It's tripped me up a couple times, thinking sally had posted a brand new thread that included mention about solving performance and aliasing issues...only to discover it's just the thread from a year or two ago. :\
Sounds like something that would be good posted in the Forum Feedback section.

Not noticing the date was less than half the issue.

Hey - this upgrade has peaked my interest and I'm keen to come back to Elite but, I'm a bit confused.

Does the 4.0 require separate installation? If so, how large is it and also what are the system specs for it? Is it just the same as the Odyssey system requirements/install size?

I have Odyssey but due to my old hardware, can't run Odyssey on-foot very well. So I only play Horizons. Though I like several of the Odyssey features, like the changed Galaxy map.

And I can't access Horizons 4.0. Launches Horizons 3.8 or Odyssey 4.0. When I removed the Odyssey DLC, I can launch Horizons 3.8 or prompt the client to download Odyssey.

I want to access Horizons 4.0. How do I do so?

From the dismissive replies elsewhere it seems FD doesn't give a monkeys that you (we) can't access EDH4.0 - the only way it would seem is to buy another account without oddity.

Umm... Play Odyssey and avoid the on-foot content?

AFAIK Horizons 4.0 is Odyssey, just with some things disabled. You can "disable" those same things yourself by just not doing them.

I even got (shortly) the Odyssey splash screen when starting up Horizons 4.0. Only thing I still need to test (unless someone else has done that by tomorrow evening) is to see whether I can land on "sparse atmosphere" worlds. I can land at Ody settlements, that was the first thing I tried. Some sort of greenhouse complex in Deciat.

So definitely opportunity for EDO to breach EDO age-rating if they could instance together there.

Interested to know if you could see any NPC characters wandering about there?

Greetings Commanders,

Earlier this month we shared this post which described our plans to make 4.0 available to all PC users. We’d like to take this opportunity reiterate the purpose of this option and answer some of your questions. To that end please, read this FAQ on our website:

I ran into the issue that while trying to download 4.0 (had my computer running the whole night) that the space on my computer would be barely sufficient to hold the files of 4.0 with about no space for any other updates. Sadly, nothing told me about that issue before I started the download. So I am now stuck with an almost full drive.
Is there a way to uninstall these files again? I play the game via steam.

So I am trying to understand this?

My friends I play with do not own Odyssey but I do. So the only way I can continue to play with them together is if we both use Horizon 3.8 since there is no Odyssey / Horizon (4.0) instancing.

Would have been nice if I had a Horizon (4.0) version available to me so I could continue playing with my wing mates while they try the new code base.
:(

Correct on all counts.

Horizons 4 runs as well (or as badly, depending on your hardware) as Odyssey will, so if you struggle with Odyssey you're not missing out by not having the option for Horizons 4.

I don't disagree with this, but I think the more logical approach would be for Frontier to allow instancing between Odyssey and Horizons 4.0 where the two games overlap. That way you can have the best of both worlds.

The entire thing is a mess, because Frontier markets Odyssey as a DLC, when in fact it's an entirely new game. I can't log into Battlefield 4 and play with friends who only have Battlefield 3, and everyone accepts that fact. Odyssey is Battlefield 4, and Horizons 3.8 is Battlefield 3. Horizons 4.0 is the shareware version of Odyssey - a demo, nothing more. Of course this is not how Frontier advertises and sells the game. They pretend Odyssey is DLC when it is not. What they are doing borderline false advertising.. Imagine if Egosoft said, "X4 is DLC to X3, so you must buy X3 before you can play X4" even though they are entirely separate games based on the same universe.

All that said, if your friends decide Horizons 4 is great, they should just go ahead and spend an extra $20 and get Odyssey (it's on sale right now).

My first time here so, sorry if I'm in the wrong place and sorry if this question sounds a bit stupid.
I have recently migrated over from console (brilliant by the way) and obviously installed the Frontier launcher. This morning (16/09/22) and before I installed Odyssey, I had the option on the launcher, to launch Horizons 3.8 or 4.0. I went ahead and purchased Odyssey on Steam (my accounts are linked) and now the option to launch Horizons 4.0 has now disappeared from the Frontier launcher. Is this supposed to have happened? The Option for odyssey is there and this ahs launched in 4.0.0.1451 when I opened the game, but as I said previously, the option for Horizons 4.0 has gone just leaving Horizons and this launches in 3.8.
Hope this all makes sense and once again, sorry if I'm sounding a bit dull here.

Yes, that's how Frontier have set it up. With Odyssey you have the full feature product now, so they probably think you have no more reason to use the "light" version, which is Horizons on the the 4.0 client.

Thankyou so much for the reply and for the help. I had a feeling that was the case but being so new to it all I was thinking there was an issue with the launcher because I bought Odyssey from Steam. I can relax now.....
