4.0 Access on PC: FAQ

Well, the answer is: we can. I've uninstalled 3.8, and if I need Horizons or the base game e.g. to get my SRV unstuck, I start 4.0 with the SeasonTwo or SeasonOne parameter. Frontier should give us launcher entries to make this easier.
How exactly did you manage this?

I wish people would stop to proclaim that 3.8 looks "better" in general. It does not.
It looks different. If it's "better" is just a matter of personal taste, which is a pure subjective indidual opinion case by case.

Personally I like the overall lighting, and planet tech in odyssey. Lighting is less intrusive " in your face " tinting of everything into the same color in many places.
I get that its not everyones taste, but it is what it is now and at some point there will be only 1 version of the game.
They need to move forward with the game and not holding up by a community comparing 3.8 with 4.0 for the next 5 years, arguing in endless debattes what looks better and what not ongoing for decades.

For how to launch Horizons 4.0 on an Odyssey account, see here.

Frontier's own launcher offers the option to uninstall Horizons 3.8. If you do so, Steam and Epic may get confused about the missing files, so it's probably a good idea to disable automatic updates and download all future updates to client 4.0 directly from Frontier instead.

I just want to verify what I believe to be true - installing Horizons 4.0 will not touch my 3.8 install in any way, and I'm free to delete 4.0 after I test it (morbid curiosity) if I decide to, correct? All the config and setting files are separate, right? In other words, 3.8 and 4.0 are truly, really two separate games in regards to how my PC sees them, correct? The last thing I want to do is bork my 3.8 install.

The options folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options) is shared, but you can back it up if you're worried about it.

That's what I mean. I don't see an option in the launcher to uninstall specific modules, only "Uninstall Game".

"Uninstall Game" will uninstall only the game client associated with the selected launcher entry. The corresponding entries will remain in the list, but if you select them again, the button on the left will show "INSTALL" instead of "PLAY".

For example, if you uninstall "Elite Dangerous" or "Elite Dangerous: Horizons", client 3.8 will be removed. If you uninstall "Elite Dangerous: Horizons 4.0" or "Elite Dangerous: Odyssey", client 4.0 will be removed.

Just giving Hor 4.0 a go and so far it runs nice smother than 3.8, the UI is very different their seams to be more steps to get thing done, but that's probably just me finding way round it I think a little time and it will be ok.
The sound levels in 4.0 are all over the shop really disappointing and some of the standard missions in H 4.0 are gone. I will give it a few more hour's before I make any decisions.

The entire thing is a mess, because Frontier markets Odyssey as a DLC, when in fact it's an entirely new game. I can't log into Battlefield 4 and play with friends who only have Battlefield 3, and everyone accepts that fact. Odyssey is Battlefield 4, and Horizons 3.8 is Battlefield 3. Horizons 4.0 is the shareware version of Odyssey - a demo, nothing more. Of course this is not how Frontier advertises and sells the game. They pretend Odyssey is DLC when it is not. What they are doing borderline false advertising.. Imagine if Egosoft said, "X4 is DLC to X3, so you must buy X3 before you can play X4" even though they are entirely separate games based on the same universe.
what? Since when was ED:O a brand new game? it is an expansion, I use the same account, same character in ED:O that i used in Horizons, that i used in the base game.

over the years since its release I dunno, world of warcraft, euro truck sim 2 and EVE have had significant expansions with graphical updates but they are still the same game, not sequels.

EDH 4.0 is another example of what happen if you don't test things its, playable but who would want to interstellar factors don't work, if you use the SRV then go back into space your primary weapons don't work the planet surfaces are bad if this is an example Odyssey will be like you can stick it

Having Odyssey I don’t have access to the version of the code without access to on foot and atmospheric content known as EDH 4.0.

However IF work though as long as the faction who put a bounty on you aren’t in that system, I haven’t noticed the SRV messing up my ships weapons, the planet surfaces are variable some are so rocky or lumpy that using your ship is the only reasonable way to get around others are fine, some are less spectacularly over the top than in Horizons, it varies.
Some of the planet surface stuff could be down to hardware and in game graphical settings, it all looked a lot worse for me when I was using my six year old and slightly underspecced at the time laptop with even with lowered graphics settings low FPS now with my new machine it all looks very nice and FPS rarely dips below three figures.
