4K confirmed for Xbox One X. Ps4 Pro owners, take out the Pitchforks!

Now you're forcing me to cheat, because the only 2.4 in-cockpit pics I've got are those used to report the PS1-like textures issue. But, if you ignore my human and the different lighting, the few common features look the same to me...

Hi, remember this thread? Remember how we don't get 4K?

I've got something new for you!

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteOne/c..._an_xbox_one_x_and/?utm_source=reddit-android

I was tempted for a short while to get the new XBox for improved visuals (read - decent shadows), but I've since backed away from that idea. ED is the only game I play on PS4 that frustrates me due to its many visual shortcomings & bugs, and looking at the Playstation lineup for 2018, I could get a lot of AAA games that look amazing on my humble PS4 Slim for the price of an XB1X.

And with my luck, the day I buy XB1X is the day Frontier would announce a 4K patch for the Pro

I honestly believe there is little chance of that happening now.

Considering my shadow quality has gotten worse with every single patch, I'm inclined to agree, sadly...

Nooooooooooooo! Say it isn't so!
Keep the faith, it took a long while for even the base xbox version to be smoothed out, so it may happen. FD have created the best game ever, and their genius will hopefully find a way, eventually.

Heh, there is always hope, I just feel personally that PS4 Elite Dangerous is now very low on the list of FDev priorities. There are still some big patches to come this year but I am taking a break from the game to play other things.

Same here. I'm 7KLY from the Bubble, and I'm logging in less and less. If Frontier doesn't care enough about their game to fix it, then I'm not going to care enough to play it. I have PS3 games that look better than ED does for me at the moment (the shaders are terrible on my PS4 Slim since 3.0.? dropped).

Just like my Gold Sidewinder paint job, my 'gold outlook' of Frontier disappeared when 2.4 dropped, reappeared briefly when 3.0 was released, and disappeared again shortly after that with subsequent updates. I'm not sure if I'll ever get my gold paint / opinion back again..

Don't trust the internet ;)

I don't blame you taking a break from it. Been having fun in farcry5 for a while, looks amazing on the x, and red dead in 4k is also a joyous sight to behold (feels like a new game).
I expect you'll fall in love with ed again when the planet features get some improvements later in the year, i know i will definitely head off in full exploring mode again when that drops (regardless of bugs). Maybe by then a 4k mode (checkerboarded or otherwise) will be properly on pro.

I've not missed the goldwinder tho, it was a bit of a waste on just the starter ship tbh, might have better for the cobr4...!

I think breaks from a game after playing it for a long time are really necessary, otherwise you'll have a "burnout" after some time. When Elite released I was hyped for months and I think never had such a long time where I nearly didn't play anything else.

During Autumn/Winter I started playing other games again like AC Origins, Horizon Zero Dawn DLC and some puzzle games like QUBE and Talos Principle. Since 3.0 I enjoy Elite quite a bit again, especially engineering my ship to perfection is motivating me right now.

ED will always have a place on my hard drive as long as I have room for it. If Frontier just fixes the bugs, I'll happily go on a second honeymoon with this game :D

Heck, I'll still play it occasionally even with the bugs, but the XB1X players can have all the paint jobs and ships kits that I currently have no interest in, thanks to these broken shaders.

And so we officially remain the only PS4 Pro-enhanced game on the market that offers no higher resolution option than 1080p -- now even as compared with games from the same developer!

It's nice to be special!

Not sure if it's been said before (I didn't read the whole thread as it goes back quite a few months), but whereas XB1X can do native 4K, the PS4 Pro cannot. It can display at 4K resolution using clever rendering techniques, but as others have said this is just super-sampled and not rendered natively.

PS5 maybe...? ;)

Yes this has been said before (it's not supersampling tho). But as before I'll observe that -- just to make one example out of many -- there is a famous, very colourful space exploration game on PS4 which last year got a PS4 Pro patch offering the option of choosing either:

60FPS @ 1080p

or

30FPS @ 1800p

so yes, there are few (maybe very few?) games on Pro that output a proper 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) at whatever framerate, but this does not mean that there aren't a LOT of games (in fact, all of them except Elite) that have been Pro-patched to offer higher-than-1080p resolution options -- either 1440p or 1800p.

And from what I've seen watching many Digital Foundry videos, these "pseudo-4K" games look surprisingly good despite not being "true" 4K. As a 1080p screen owner for the foreseeable future, I also welcome 4K support because of the antialiasing it brings via supersampling.

BTW, is that game you hint at No Man's Sky?
