Modes 5 minutes in Open...

Not answering to the points I made, but instead attacking my language and making malign assumptions about my motives is not against my person?
Even if he is right in his assumptions, it's still an ad hominem attack. ;)

You didn't read the link I shared unfortunately.

That is only around half an ad hominem. (An ad homidget, perhaps.)

"Instead" of addressing your points means it's not an ad hominem yet.
One would have to use those things "to" refute your points to make it ad hominem.

Here it is again.

(excerpt, emphasis mine)

One of the most widely misused terms on the Net is "ad hominem". It is most often introduced into a discussion by certain delicate types, delicate of personality and mind, whenever their opponents resort to a bit of sarcasm. As soon as the suspicion of an insult appears, they summon the angels of ad hominem to smite down their foes, before ascending to argument heaven in a blaze of sanctimonious glory. They may not have much up top, but by God, they don't need it when they've got ad hominem on their side. It's the secret weapon that delivers them from any argument unscathed.

In reality, ad hominem is unrelated to sarcasm or personal abuse. Argumentum ad hominem is the logical fallacy of attempting to undermine a speaker's argument by attacking the speaker instead of addressing the argument. The mere presence of a personal attack does not indicate ad hominem: the attack must be used for the purpose of undermining the argument, or otherwise the logical fallacy isn't there. It is not a logical fallacy to attack someone; the fallacy comes from assuming that a personal attack is also necessarily an attack on that person's arguments.

Therefore, if you can't demonstrate that your opponent is trying to counter your argument by attacking you, you can't demonstrate that he is resorting to ad hominem. If your opponent's sarcasm is not an attempt to counter your argument, but merely an attempt to insult you (or amuse the bystanders), then it is not part of an ad hominem argument.

Actual instances of argumentum ad hominem are relatively rare. Ironically, the fallacy is most often committed by those who accuse their opponents of ad hominem, since they try to dismiss the opposition not by engaging with their arguments, but by claiming that they resort to personal attacks. Those who are quick to squeal "ad hominem" are often guilty of several other logical fallacies, including one of the worst of all: the fallacious belief that introducing an impressive-sounding Latin term somehow gives one the decisive edge in an argument.

Strictly using it to dismiss the argument out of hand is enough, you don't need to directly refute the points by using the attack.

I quite like ad homidget to make the distinction though

We have one that lives near Waikiki (midget, obv.) that rides a really(!) large bicycle, hangs out in dive bars and gets into fights a lot.

He's got a piece of ratty carpet across the top tube, to sit on.
He always wears cut-off jean shorts.
The whole set up looks uncomfortable as heck if you ask me!
It also makes him look way smaller than he actually is, trying to straddle that enormous thing with the seat digging into his back, stretching at the bottom of each pedal stroke...

He also has a Freddy Mercury 'stache btw!

What the heck was this thread about again???

Ad Homie 'nem

Yes, to dismiss, not simply instead of or in addition to.

It's also perfectly reasonable to come to some "unflattering" conclusions about a speaker/writer, and subsequently dismiss their ideas.

Eg
"Based on your posts, it is clear you are an xyz and I will no longer be giving your words any consideration."

That said, I'm still drinking my morning coffee, so it's bound to be hit or miss.

"Based on your posts, it is clear you are an xyz and I will no longer be giving your words any consideration."
Ah the joys of the ignore function.

I hate having to use it but there are some people who would have been punched in the face by so many people already if it was only real life.

This thread is a good example of what I love about Open, uppity midgets and all.

@frosty, dude, do you deal with anger issues much? "Punching people in the face" now?

Hmm, yeah, not where I was going; punching over words.

I grew up surfing in Hawaii.
We tend to have a very thick skin for heckling.
Getting mocked is normal, hahaha...
Your best friends will chortle with glee as they watch the ocean maul you like no tomorrow, but they'll also save you if need be.
We also routinely make racist jokes yet seem to get along much better than many people elsewhere.

Finding outrage is easy when you look for it.
People ought to laugh more.

Culture clubbed in da face.

Hahahaha!!!

I bet the weather helps as well.

Surfing in Hawaii sounds like an excellent way to grow up :)

Aloha from Hawaii folks.
