Back in the day when warp tech wasn't as good your ship would come in at the edge of the system and you'd point towards the star and torus 'jump' inwards. I always remember feeling twitchy when it cut out and another ship slunk out of the darkness and passed by. Will they turn and open fire once they get on your rear or just keep going. Hell some crazy pilots used to activate warp once the station auto pilot kicked in and jump straight into their next destination to avoid getting hijacked.
It's a nasty galaxy. Strange thing is the game is made that way. I get jumped constantly by rival faction NPC's in the systems I'm in. The usual message " Mmm fat cargo... Give me x thousand credits..." mostly I don't even have much on me yet still they open fire and keep blasting til I bug out or the feds arrive or I suck vac and go for a rebuy. Half the time they don't even wait for their own "10 seconds and I'll open fire". Average cobra with a proudly mostly harmless pilot gets hammered by vulture/python/fdl/conda. Avoiding the initial interdiction is actually quite easy but once you've low waked it's like blood in the water for sharks, they soon catch up and it's shoot on sight. Mega inconvenient as you are trying to align that salvage black box bouncing off the upper atmosphere/gravity well of a nearby planet.
Don't mind the rebuy, I'm slowly getting the hang of combat and of boosting away and high waking. Maybe one day I'll have a super cool ship with ultra killozap weapons but till then I'll keep my head down. I will be bloody furious when I get done over by someone real, but they'll be bottom of my list, still working on getting back at all the NPC's who got me first. This is Elite. Open or solo the game has your number and is coming for you. Don't be surprised just be prepared. If I'm close by call for help, you can have a good laugh watching me get blown up, again. Peace dudes.
