Modes 5 minutes in Open...

I bet the weather helps as well.

Surfing in Hawaii sounds like an excellent way to grow up :)

It's weird, it can be cold, pouring rain in one area and hot and dry in another, and snowing up on the mountains.

Surfing, with the exception of the tourist/beginner friendly spots, is very competitive and not like most people envision.
People are not at all(!) happy to see one another as waves are a hotly contested and finite resource.
Strangers will openly ridicule a lack of skill and tell you to leave.

Heck, I do that to my best friends!
My brother?
Forget about it...

Hmmm. .... Nope, stereotype still firmly in place. You can't expect a little bit of reality to shift years of indoctrination.

Haha, fair enough.
You strike me as someone with a pretty high tolerance for cheese.
(Not the edible sort, and I mean that in the most flattering way.)
These are the characters one gets to surf with all the time, here.

(Kinda like open?)

You confuse me jassonbarron, before you hit Elite rank on the forums you were all :-

But since your Elite ranking you've been so :-

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have noticed this! :D

Personally, I like to think I was:

And am now:

Which just goes to show that while I'm maturing a little, I still retain a connection to my roots.

For the first time in over two years I play in open with my main account...

Very first supercruise. Interdicted by a ferdelance whom shall remain unnamed.
I had no cargo, was in a lightly fitted asp.
No chat, no RP just instant death with beams and PA.
went from 4km to about 500m distance less than 10 seconds, so super engineered.

luckly less than 1m rebuy.

5 minutes.

Real Nice.

2 and 1/2 years in open and the times i got killed by murderers or in any PvP engagements i can still count with my fingers.

To improve your open-experience ask yourself:
-Which system was it?
-Was it necessary for me to be there? (For example hotspots)
-was it the right time? (For example being at alien sites right after discovery at forum posted coordinates)
-have i prepared myself enough? Did i used the right ship for this task?
-do i know how to avoid interdictions in supercruise?
-did i reacted correctly or can i improve my reactions?
-what can i do next time better so that this doesn't repeat.

And finally
-is dying in a ship really THAT disturbing? / did the rebuy cost so much that it really is a problem for me?

There are other reasons other than the ship/rebuy. The problem is not that people play in open, but those that demand all play in open, or that only things done in open count, or they need "rewards" for open, or go into PG's to destroy ships because they are not in open for them to shoot at.

I have played in open a few times. At the moment my experience has not differed much from solo or PG. My main beef with open is that the game seems to preform worse than when playing in PG and solo. Had 30 fps drop once.

Yea, even though there might not be anyone in your instance - there is still other instances with people in around you.
Which can impact on your performance, as at any moment the match maker could decide to let you all see each other.

If you keep the bandwidth monitor open, you can see the increase in network traffic. Which will be the biggest clue the game is thinking about putting you with others (or has done).

It is broken atm.

Oh Dear i guess that explains alot

We should make a list of what isn't broken - it would be quicker than listing what is at this point ;)

Lucky for me, I'm taking a break since I got Star Trek Bridge Crew.

To bad its VR only, would have loved to play that game.

Edit: It seems like they have dropped a non-VR patch.

To the OP:

I"m sorry you got ganked. That sucks. If you're like me, you've worked hard for your ships and their engineered modifications.

My Asp Explorer got needlessly ganked in Open Play about 4 times before I switched to Solo and joined Mobius. Anytime I'm doing something important (other than bounty hunting), I play in Solo or the Mobius group.

When I do Open Play, I do it cautiously and with a ship I know can either out fight or outrun a ganker.

My new game is still 10 days away, but then I too will be taking a break from ED for a while. Have fun with the new game. :)
