A Final Plea to Frontier for Longer Hairstyles

While I sympathize about wishing to create a certain look for a player character, the devs were clear that the lack of long hair styles is because of the helmet.

Even if we excuse the internal consistency issue of needing an airtight seal in helmets for instances of pressure and oxygen loss, there is also the matter of texture and model clipping. The art team would necessarily have to model longer styles twice: one style for the helmet-less, flowing look and one for the stuffed-up-inside-the-helmet look.

That shouldn't be an issue, just remove the hair when wearing a helmet. It can be chalked up to wearing a skull cap or a small bun when one is apt to be needing a helmet.

Not really since in real life there would actually not really be a huge amount of bulk for shoulder length hair to be stuffed up inside a helmet's skull cap. Thus there would not need to be two models made in game, just the longer hair one. The helmet look would not be any different to any other character for the aforementioned real life reason.

And model design-wise, sure it would a bit of extra work to get a longer hair model to not clip and look good but it wouldn't require massive amounts of works for say something the length of this:

It's doable, especially just to add one initial version like the example above.

I can think of more useful things for the dev's to be concentrating on.

Fantastic! Post them in suggestions and maybe they'll get some support. :)

It's just that I imagine long hair would be a bad idea working around heavy machinery etc. especially within the Elite universe, also a bad idea with pop up helmets but that's been brought up many times already.

Fair question, but it's hair not a vital nerve cluster, lol. I'm pretty sure if it works in these examples, then sitting in a cushy chair in a cockpit would be pretty safe. :D (Some male riders had similar.)

(Apologies if the photos aren't great, I was still new to photography back then!)

Of course it's doable. Everything is doable in a virtual world. The question is whether or not it's worth it to devote resources to said issues. What's the payoff here? How many players intend to have a character with long hair? Is that number large enough to justify the extra work it takes to make long hair models?

First off. That wasn't an ultimatum that was me saying I personally can't get over not having long hair because it would bother me to no end.

Secondly. You are being standoffish for no reason. I haven't been rude to you but clearly I wronged you somehow.

Finally. Don't you worry your pretty little head. If I'm that much of a bother to you then you'll be happy to know I'll be leaving these forums soon enough because I've had about all I can stand of comments like this.

You've made loads of statements, I would review what you say.

Thanks for saying I have pretty head though.

While I would love them to use TressFX, get half a dozen commanders in the same instance all using it, and watch your graphics card burn.

I've said as much in other threads. A model swap with the hair is the route. Video games have been doing this forever. A hood in dark souls, a motorcycle helmet in GTA, a hat in the Sims. It's a model swap. They can still have it within reason if they go with shoulder length hair.

Momoka, Darkfyre, Shar, IF you feel so strongly about this issue please post your actual real non-rping hair pics. Right now this will barely make a 10 pager thread, devs will not notice anything below 38 pages. Do it for the future of Elite Dangerous!

About a third of the human population has long hair, the question should be why would you even start developing a charactor creator without it. Makes zero sense.

The roleplay estrogen level is over 9000 on this forum...lol Threatening to quit over this is quite silly.
Different people find enjoyment and immersion in different things. It's not silly just because you don't feel the same way as the OP. She has every right to comment on an issue affecting her personal enjoyment of the game just like you have that same right over something that might be of importance to you but of no interest to someone else.

But even so, this isn't about representation. It's about resource management. How many people playing Elite have long hair? How many of them, specifically, intend to create a commander with long hair?

Which is why I said I'd be fine with static hair. Dynamic hair would cause a strain on many player's pcs, (granted I shouldn't be one of those people since I'm running a rx 480. Recently forced to upgrade due to a power supply issue.)

If the helmet was the dev's reason, it's incredibly weak. They've already included the no-helmet option, so there's no expectation it stays on.

As for "two looks", a keybind to "Deploy Hairpoints" would work nicely! :D

I think more choices are good and understand how lack of customization options might affect someone's enjoyment of the game.

And this is despite my personal feelings that hair is stupid and useless and that everyone would be better off if they just shaved their heads.

Well, RP wise, all the men should have long beards and hair, all the woman should have incredibly long hair, I know I've never been able to get out of my pilot seat for a cut n shave ;)
