A Final Plea to Frontier for Longer Hairstyles

Sorry, I did read your OP, but it seems like so long ago; I had forgotten that part. I agree the helmet is not a particularly satisfying solution.

It's fine. No need to be sorry. The thread has kinda grown quite a bit so it's easy to forget bits of the information flying around in here :)

Another vote in favour of long hair here.... and curly hair, games never have curly hair other that afros or very short curls...

I'm going to start a mega thread asking for curly hair.

Long hair would be great. I've read there are some technical limitations, which is fine, a bit sad panda but fine. What I'd like to request now is that if you do find a way to get it in the game, PLEASE do not do this thing where you only make them available for purchase. Give us some default long hair first. I know it's a bit early to talk about purchasing this sort of thing, but come on, if you're doing it for ships you're going to do it for commanders, no doubt in my mind. Just a pre-emptive request, thanks. :)

To some extent I agree with this. It would be nice if should they add in longer options, they should offer two or three along with the short hair now as a default. That said, I personally would be okay just getting the options. And buying more options in the store I'm totally fine with. I don't mind paying for such things. I've been practically begging Frontier to add pink skins for all the ships. (Yes all of them. I will buy them twice. Even the Cobra MK IV... If I must...) Still, it's just too early to have that conservation yet.

I briefly owned a white and pink Beluga. It was named Barbieluga but I didn't keep it for too long.

as a bloke who used to have long hair I understand , I have seen your posts and when seeing the live screen was thinking of you when I see it
, I do hope long or longish hair will come about for men as well , tbh was hoping to go turquoise with my char hair

Out of interest why is it so important for your character to look as close as possible to RL you? Can't you just say she gets fed up with dealing with lots of hair in zero g and decides to finally get a haircut?
More options is always good of course. Hopefully down the line they'll figure out how to give you the option!

Why aren't Long-Haired Minions in Commander Creator?

Assuming the 2.3 release remains unchanged, I'm especially offended that long-haired and Transgender Holo-Minion Commanders will be limited to identify short-haired Human templates.

This needs to be corrected, ASAP! [big grin]

Late to this discussion but must admit that i am slightly incredulous that we are having a massive discussion about the length of hair. Must be a brill upgrade if this is all we can find fault with...

It's a personal thing. Part of in comes from from me strongly needing to see myself in characters. In Elite my CMDR is supposed to be me if I were alive in 3303. I have never had short hair and you can be sure I never will. My hair as a big part of the way I express myself so I need it to be as close as possible to that in any characters I create in games. It's even more important here because my character has a long history already. That sudden;y changing due to things out of my hands is too hard a pill to swallow.

longer hair extensions yup. why have male/female types too??? cmon FRONTIER this is 2017!!! If i want to put a nice blond bob on my bearded butch cross-dresser i should be able too! Sort it pls

As many folks have pointed out, NASA doesn't mandate short hair and we can safely assume the future is a going to be a little more sophisticated than conditions on the ISS. I imagine rather luxurious soirees being held aboard ships (particularly the liners and Imperial vessels) and the flight suit would not be appropriate attire. We could argue that these events would take place in secured areas of the vessels, but experience dictates that travelers prefer a view.

Ah yes ! But Drew, those viewing areas can and probably would be protected with lightning fast deploying shutters at the slightest hint of damage or breach. It would be safe to assume that emergency oxygen masks would be available for the passengers in case of room decompression, however nothing against the harshness of space as the Elite spaceships are quite reliable, so much like for flight in an airliner in the present time, passengers don't need to wear a flight suit.

"But, poy" I hear you write (I have very accute hearing :p ) "pilots in airliners aren't in flight suits either".
Yes, of course, that's because in case of decompression, they're instructed to descend to breathable altitudes (<FL100 (10000 feet)). They're also equipped with more oxygen than the passengers (If I recall regulations correctly).

So yeah, commanders need a space suit with an emergency helmet in case of their cockpit breaking up (since our ships aren't equipped with cameras the only way to pilot in this condition is to be exposed to the conditions of space). Meanwhile the passengers need neither since their area can be sealed from space or moved elsewhere without impacting the vital mission of flying the ship.

So, if we assume long hair is viable, how could it be treated?

Simple:

You tuck it into your suit/clothing in some fashion and it is secured in that way.
It is tied back, ponytail/scrunchie style and then secured
You use a fully integrated helmet in place of the auto-deploying RemLok (for pilots at least)

I'd take it, it allows people to have their preferred style while still making sense.

Clever Tech

The RemLok technology deals with the 'excess' hair by cutting it off when it deploys (mechanically, by heat or something more exotic). Ruins your hairstyle but saves your life. I think most folks would be happy with that. ;)
Hair in the 34th century is 'Smart', perhaps with the ability to shrink/grow, change colour and consistency and self-clean at whim. It can be adjusted for the social occasion or situation required. After all, "You're worth it."
Remloks themselves are part of a wide variety of devices with similar functions but which work in a variety of ways from the basic 'mask', through to the 'helmet' to the full 'cocoon'. What you use depends on the travelling situation you are in. A pilot in a fighter ship is like to use a different device to a freighter pilot, the same applies to regular and occasional passengers who prefer to wear their own clothes rather than the ubiquitous flight suits.

In short, there's plenty of scope for long hair to be common in the ED universe... IMHO. I suspect glamour, style and fashion will always find a way. ;)

Cheers,

Drew.

Damn, alright, didn't even think about the easiest and simplest solution, getting rid of the issue when a problem arises. You got me convinced Drew. Good job.

(However I'd still like an answer to the first rebuttal :p )

I certainly can't fault her on that. I've been doing that ever since character creators came out for RPGs... my attempts as making "me" in Mass Effect were pretty laughable (and the transition from ME1 to ME2 even more so).

Is... is this really what gaming has devolved into in the intervening decades between me playing Frontier: Elite II back in those Halcyon days, me not playing games much if at all since then, and me now suddenly getting back into Elite-as-an-online-game?

People are actually and seriously being concerned with whether their virtual avatar has long virtual hair or not AND getting distressed about it AND some others bringing in identity politics to the discussion?

I feel like I've been in some weird slumber for 3 decades and woken up in the Idiocracy.

Some people need to undertake a serious bit of introspection and ponder their existence on this planet, and whether or not, on the whole, getting this seriously and deeply embroiled in a virtual world arcade game is a healthy thing or not. Whether, on the face of it, it is worth expending your life's precious time and energy on actually getting upset about virtual hair in a virtual arcade game!

nailed it.
