I'm going to give a general comment, not directed at anyone, but something that I think needs to be considered in general terms when discussing forum behaviour.

We are an international community. There are quite a few people on this board who are not native English speakers. They are from different countries with different cultures, and how you express yourself, and how you apologise, and what is perceived as polite and what is perceived as rude differs.

I'm Norwegian, Brits tend to find Norwegians a "little" rude in the way we express ourselves. One common claim is that we never say thank you or please. This is mainly because those terms are used less in Norwegian and our day to day speak contain fewer "polite" expressions.

So we are not being rude intentionally. We are transfering our way of expressing ourselves in our native language to the way we express ourselves in English. That can come across as somewhat rude in many cases.
This is not an excuse, but I would ask that everyone take such differences into consideration when reading other peoples posts.

I have seen discussions on forums go completely wrong because of lacking language skills and people misunderstand each other, and neither part understanding why.

I can understand people taking things the wrong way due to international language barriers, but when a person is the same nationality as you and makes an attack on your character and that attack has nothing to do with the original post then it’s just trolling for a response.
Personally I feel that many of these people are social outcasts with no real friends to speak of and that the only time they can feel good about themselves is when they are trying to get someone to respond to their posts,
I consider these people no different to those trolls who make derogatory comments on memorial Facebook pages just to get attention.

I agree that posting condescending or derogatory comments on any kind of forum is not on.
I was making a general comment though. I usually butt in and post a comment like I did whenever the subject of trolling arises on a forum. (The comment I made was actually an edit of one I made on the Oolite forum a while back).
I have been fortunate enough to work in an international environment for quite some time, and the common language used is almost always English. I have seen so many misunderstandings and so much confusion because of language barriers, that I firmly believe that a reminder is needed for all, both us foreigners and the native speakers, every now and again.

Well said, Gimi. There's a big difference between bluntness and rudeness though, and luckily we only really seem to encounter bluntness. The very occasional rude person is normally dealt with responsibly, and the bluntness has always been dealt with politely and effectively an all the Elite communities I've been a part of.

:)

<dons his curmudgeon's sombrero>
On a general point about this forum: I see a little too much language used that can only be described as laddish - I find such language a little offensive, but more to the point, it is unnecessary.

I've actually had a lot of fun finding alternatives to the language I'd use amongst my friends :)! I'm tending to go old old school with cads, bounders and skulduggery :p!

There have been a couple of people who have annoyed me, but not to the extent of blocking them, and I don't think I've been attacked personally (except once, and I can chalk that up to very different backgrounds).

Even the people who have got on my nerves the most have made some interesting points, so I'm glad not to have blocked them,

Living in the cut-throat world of academia (no, really :p), I'm used to having lively debates with people who I consider totally wrong, but can still respect them or be friends with them.

I've not voted on the poll, cos none of the options apply!

Well said Wookie. If you're anything like me, whatever other people think/say is just water off a duck's back. We can have our own opinions as forum users, no matter what our history or background may be. We all have different views and ideas about everything and always will. I can respect that and see no need to 'block' people just because I disagree with what they have to say.

In any event, aren't there rules against personal victimisation of forum users? I'm sure there's always the ability to report someone if you feel you're being persecuted.

I've not voted on the poll either, for the same reason as you. :)

<edit> In fact, most (if not all) the forum members I have "arguments" with is carried out totally in a role-playing fashion and well within the spirit of the game(s). Most of these forum members are also on my friends list. We're just one happy bunch of Eliters having fun. :D

Agree with both of you to, no need to block.

Penthux is an arch enemy of mine(Fed GEEK!) and we argue to, but as he said, all in good fun and in the spirit of the game(just wish he wasn't so damn clever with his replies!

Based on the amount of time I spend here, plus the amount of posts I make, I would be surprised if I was annoyed by anybody... Same as I would be extremely surprised if I annoyed anyone to the point of blocking me...

But one never knows...

Everyone seems very friendly to me. - Almost as friendly as the Oolite forums!

If you 'block' someone, does it actually scrub all their posts from any threads you read?

Debating is the easy part as people often disagree, but how would you deal with someone that decides to turn the debate into an attack on your charactor?

Report them to the mods or ignore them.

Have you done this? You seem to have a grievance over this as you started a thread on it.

If it is that bad then you should do something about it as they have probably broken forum rules.

You should be enjoying your time on the forum.:)

I haven’t replied to this person since January so it’s not an ongoing issue as far as I am concerned, though they still pop up from time to time with a personal opinion.

I thought I would create a thread to highlight to others that it’s not just them who can be on the receiving end of forum abuse, as people will probably feel that they are alone in this matter.

Normally I am an 'If you can't take the heat...' kind of guy.
I have to say though, this is one of the friendliest gaming forums I take part in.
My experience is that gaming forums tend to be less.... polite than other forums and the topics get off-topic in a personal way more frequently. I put this down to the fact that the user age range of gaming forums probably contains a high percentage of people who are developing their social skills, and naturally use the forums for a bit of practice either consciously or not.
Also I have noticed that forums that mix gaming with development can become conflicted because there are people who are there to socialize mixing conversation with those who are there to hammer out a point. This can cause frustration which comes out on the forum.

Considering that this forum is fertile ground for the worst I have seen in forum etiquette I am almost surprised that it is not only one of the best gaming oriented forums I know but one of the best forums of any kind.

It is an honour and a privilege to be a part of it.
:D

Trying to stoke the fire there Mobius? :p
A few people have irritated me by being needlessly obnoxious. but hey ho such is life; ignorance is bliss ;)

Got some tense moments with someone, but I think most of them were due to misunderstanding and not a proper choose of word. I'm not native english speaker and seems like sometimes people see an agressive attitude from me when it was not intended.

totally agree with you, i think this forum is one of the best ive been on and because most of the members are in their 30s and 40s people on the whole know how to reply to a thread without turning it personal
